This paper deals with karayala, a folk theatrical form of Himachal Pradesh. This form is basically a ritual, performed in the name of a local deity called Biju/Bijeshwar. It is a night long ritual consisting of minimum three and maximum four episodes (swaangs) and each one is followed by a musical interlude comprising singing and dancing. Karyala is an impromptu theatrical form. There are no women actors and only men play female roles. Surprisingly, till date women are not allowed to play female roles. It deals with range of themes and most of them aim at reforming society by employing techniques like mimicry, caricature, satire, paradox, pun and word play. The paper seeks to introduce karayala to larger audience. In the crisis of the present context and particularly owing to onslaught of media multiplicity, we have lost karayala’s past as none for a long while cared to document it due to urbanization, people’s indifference and media charged environment that has threatened its existence. At present it is alive in people’s memory and is necessitated by rituals to avert divine wrath; nevertheless, its space stands largely invaded by media today. The future of this folk theatrical form seems bleak unless we take effective measures to revive/ retrieve it.

The study, based on outputs obtained from villages of Shillai block in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, looks at the informal power structure found in the state’s rural areas. Both formal and the informal power structures have historically coexisted but we will study various factors that empower informal power structures and critically contrast them to the equality-based, constitutionally legalised formal power structures. This entails an understanding of the basis of mobilisation and relationships among different caste groups, the role and influence of local deity institutions, the traditional elitist strata as well as the nature of institutions like Khumlis and their subsequent relationship with formal political institutions. This purposive, investigative and participatory study was conducted in the villages of Shillai block where the process of modernisation has been very slow. This is probably why the historically privileged, traditional elite and informal institutions continue to dominate the entire social structure. The marginalised stratum of society has consequently received minimum participation and representation in formal institutions or the legislating, executing and adjudicating of policies and decisions.

Stirring words of the most outspoken of the Hebrew prophets are reexamined in this concluding volume of the esteemed Anchor Bible Commentary on Jeremiah. This final book of the three-volume Anchor Bible Commentary gives us translation and commentary on the concluding sixteen chapters of Jeremiah. Here, during Judah’s darkest days, when nationhood came to an end, Jeremiah with his people confronted the consequences of the nation’s sin, while at the same time reconstituting a remnant community with hopes to give Israel a future. Jeremiah preached that Israel’s God, Yahweh, was calling to account every nation on the Earth, even the nation chosen as his own. For the latter, Jeremiah was cast into a pit and left to die, only to be rescued by an Ethiopian eunuch. But the large collection of Foreign Nation Oracles in the book shows that other nations too were made to drink the cup of divine wrath, swollen as they were by wickedness, arrogant pride, and trust in their own gods. Yet the prophet who thundered Yahweh’s judgment was also the one who gave Israel’s remnant a hope for the future, expressed climactically in a new and eternal covenant for future days. Here too is the only report in the Bible of an accredited scribe writing up a scroll of oracles for public reading at the Temple. This magisterial work of scholarship is sure to be essential to any biblical studies curriculum. Jeremiah 37-52 draws on the best biblical scholarship to further our understanding of this preeminent prophet and his message to the world.

AbstractThis contribution deals with the current European rule of law crisis. It does so by analyzing the recent CJEU’s judgment in re LM and by considering its possible ramifications for the future of the rule of law in the EU. In particular, it is argued that, as a result of this judgment, the European rule of law as provided for by Art. 2 TEU has become a legally enforceable value. The CJEU has indeed made clear that this value features a set of minimum standards that the Member States cannot bluntly disregard. In the present context, which is characterized by the inaction of the supranational and national political institutions, a prominent role in safeguarding a liberal understanding of the European rule of law is played by the entire European judiciary (the so-called ‘Gerichtsverbund’), including national courts and tribunals.

The work of art produced in its origins was only much later recognized as such. Similarly, the artistic function of current art objects in the future may become accidental again. In fact, at no time has art ever answered exclusively to aesthetic demands. From these assumptions by Walter Benjamin (1936-1939/1992), we will attempt to apply to art the concepts of “binding” (original of ethology) and of “linking networks” (used in neuroscience) to explain distinctive aspects of image metaphysics, shared by art and religion. From a historical perspective, we will attempt to show the evolution of art in three main binding logics: art as a magical activity (also in relation to index logic); art as mimesis; and art as language. The image, or rather the multiple realities we call “image”, takes each one of these links, in an exchanging or simultaneous way, since image is their heiress. Taking into account the present context of media images hypervisibility, we aim, with this study, to show the importance of art and its mythical-religious ascendance in what concerns media image redefinition.

Pemikiran Calvin tentang ibadah bukan saja melampaui pokok bahasan seputar penggunaan alat musik dan Mazmur, melainkan juga memiliki potensi yang kaya untuk pengembangan ibadah Kristen masa kini This article presents the potential of John Calvin's thought on Christian worship for today and the future. Worship according to Calvin does not seem promising to be developed in the present context because of the narrowness of his insight. This article seeks to present a contrary perspective. This article would like to share the contribution of Calvin’s thought that can serve as a guide and correction for contemporary worship. For this reason, I will discuss the principles of Calvin’s theology, which are applied in aspects of worship, Calvin's view of the so-called liturgical sins, and metaphors used by Calvin to explain worship. Methodologically, this article seeks to draw from Calvin’s thoughts on worship and contextualize it but does not offer comprehensive and historical discussion in a strict sense. Calvin’s thought on worship not only goes beyond the subject of the use of musical instruments and psalms but also has rich potential for the development of Christian worship for today.

The general goal of this paper is to study senior Romanian citizens’ EU attitudes after ten years of European membership, with a special focus on the unsolved tension between the instrumental and symbolic perspectives. By looking at the present context, the purpose of this research is to assess the challenges and transformations of the EU-related opinions and support of traditional euro-enthusiastic citizens in times of vulnerability and struggling economies. Equally, the paper favours a future-oriented view, and puts under scrutiny people’s expectations and evaluations of the future developments of the EU and their consequences at personal, national and supra-national level.

The current situation of the language spoken in the Netherlands is analyzed here from three different perspectives: it is approached historically and semantically to c1arify the name of the language; a number of linguistic and literary ties with this language are discussed, with emphasis on the Spanish language and Central America; and the future of the Dutch language is addressed taking into account the past and present context of European languages, now that we are in a globalized world.

An English translation of a recovered article by the Dutch theologian Oepke Noordmans, Kerk en Toekomst (Church and future) is presented. The relevance of this article for the present context, especially in South Africa, is discussed against the background of Noordmans’ theology. Noordmans is not concerned about the future of the church (which in the final analysis is not meant to last forever), but calls for participation in the Kingdom of God. Noordmans’ theology is highly critical of tendencies in churches to escape from hard reality and responsibilities (Noordmans calls this weak ascesis), or to claim easily manageable solutions. He calls for a more critical attitude in accordance with the eschatological call of the Kingdom, and for a closer unity of human beings as fallible people who are united because they share a life at the foot of the cross (strong ascesis).

Both Les Bouts de Bois de Dieu and Xala underscore the significant role to be played by Africa's women, in forging a new world. When secondary plots and characters are put aside, one finds that the consistent focus in both works has been upon the strong base provided by the female configuration: traditional mother/modern daughter. Sembene invests the future of Africa in the hands of the politically astute and committed young women (Adjibidji and Rama), who are supported and encouraged by the more traditional, yet less actively involved female figures (Assitan and Awa). The essence of this female solidarity has been captured in the final scenes of both novels.
