Hong Kong nursing students' learning approaches : why and how do hospital-based general nursing students learn?

Introduction: Student Centered Learning (SCL) is an effective method to develop student's soft skills and hard skills which are very important to support their successful carrier later. This research was conducted to identify the differences of developed soft skills between students who learn with PBL method and lecturing method. Methods: Descriptive comparative method was used in this study. The samples consisted of 15 students who learned with PBL method and 15 students who learned with lecturing method. The sample for this research was selected by random sampling method. Results: The result showed that the average of student's soft skills score in PBL method was 122.63, while student's soft skills score in lecturing method was 116.27. Discussion & Conclusion: There was significant difference of student's soft skills in PBL method and lecturing method (p value = 0.038; α = 0.05). This study recommends nursing program management, faculty of medicine at the University of Syiah Kuala keeps PBL method running and develops other methods which facilitate hard skills and soft skills are development. Keywords: nursing students, soft skill, PBL

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of personal values on students’ learning behaviours. Hong Kong construction students are often criticized, by both practitioners and educators, as rote learners. To improve students’ learning processes, extensive research on a variety of aspects of construction education has been conducted. However, limited attention has been paid to the influence of personal values on students’ learning behaviours. The impact of personal value factors on the learning approaches of Chinese construction students in Hong Kong is investigated. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire survey was conducted to ethically Chinese construction students in four universities in Hong Kong. A total of 820 questionnaires were distributed and 431 valid returns were collected. Findings – The survey identified six influential values (namely, personal integrity, conservatism, determination, discipline, interpersonal relationships, and achievement), and shows that students who emphasize the virtues of personal integrity, determination, and a positive attitude toward achievement are better able to handle their interpersonal relationships, which will eventually lead them to engage in deep learning. Originality/value – Work to develop appropriate value systems is thus recommended in freshmen courses, as is the use of cooperative learning approaches. Such value systems will have a long-term influence on the learning approaches of construction students.

Pedagogical innovations applying flipped learning models are being applied in nursing education. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of the flipped learning approach in an anatomy class among undergraduate nursing students. This was a non-randomized controlled study. Of 154 nursing students enrolled in an anatomy class in South Korea, 79 were in the lecture-based group and 75 were in the flipped learning group. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Problem solving ability and self-leadership improved significantly in the flipped learning group after the intervention but decreased in the lecture-based group. There was no difference in critical thinking between the flipped learning and control groups. The participants in the flipped learning group were more satisfied with the class than those in the lecture-based group. Flipped learning facilitates interactive activities that support the needs of advanced learners and provide more opportunities to develop problem-solving abilities and self-leadership.

Students' knowledge of the concept of patient safety in infection prevention and control and treatment safety is still low. Real-life problem-based learning approaches in the area of ​​clinical education assist in patient safety education. This study was designed to identify, evaluate and summarize available evidence on the effectiveness of clinical education on student achievement of patient safety competencies. The Methode that use in this study is systematic review. Search for articles in research journals obtained from Sciencedirect, Ebscohost, Garuda, Proquest and Scopus. As many as 228 articles were obtained consisting of nursing journals and health journals with the keywords clinical education, competence, and patient safety. After that, the screening process was carried out based on the inclusion criteria and obtained 25 articles that met the criteria. The result of this study are the contribution of educational institutions in the achievement of patient safety competencies for nursing students is still low and the achievement of patient safety competencies for students at the professional level is better than for students who are still learning theory in educational institutions. The conclusion of this study is clinical education carried out by educational institutions is considered ineffective in achieving the competence of patient safety for nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a patient safety model or curriculum that is attached to clinical education in nursing education institutions

OBJECTIVETo identify the association between the use of web simulation electrocardiography and the learning approaches, strategies and styles of nursing degree students.METHODA descriptive and correlational design with a one-group pretest-posttest measurement was used. The study sample included 246 students in a Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support nursing class of nursing degree.RESULTSNo significant differences between genders were found in any dimension of learning styles and approaches to learning. After the introduction of web simulation electrocardiography, significant differences were found in some item scores of learning styles: theorist (p < 0.040), pragmatic (p < 0.010) and approaches to learning.CONCLUSIONThe use of a web electrocardiogram (ECG) simulation is associated with the development of active and reflexive learning styles, improving motivation and a deep approach in nursing students.
