Let Teens Sleep In

Last month, I wrote about the different ways that self-control strategies can help all of us, especially the teenagers in our lives, sleep better. I hope these tips have helped you make progress on your own New Year's resolutions. But self-control isn't the only way to fight temptation. Sometimes, the smartest solution is for other people to solve our problems for us. In particular, one policy change could radically increase the amount of time teenagers sleep: delay the start time of classes to an hour that more closely fits their biological clocks. A recent Rand report concluded that starting both middle and high school classes no earlier than 8:30 a.m. would translate into $8.6 billion in economic gains within two years of the change. How so? Adequate sleep can improve academic achievement, which correlates with higher income in adulthood. And more well-rested teenagers get into fewer car accidents. Like so many common sense policies, delaying start times for high school students has met with resistance. One issue is budget: for many districts, it's necessary to stagger bus schedules to save money. True, but why not flip-flop times so that elementary school students—who are natural morning larks—are picked up earlier, making it possible for middle and high school students—who are natural night owls—to go later? “Well, I don't love the idea of my 11-year-old waiting for the bus in the dark,” one mom told me. Her district had just announced precisely the sort of transportation schedule I'm describing.

Most teenagers are chronically sleep deprived. One strategy proposed to lengthen adolescent sleep is to delay secondary school start times. This would allow students to wake up later without shifting their bedtime, which is biologically determined by the circadian clock, resulting in a net increase in sleep. So far, there is no objective quantitative data showing that a single intervention such as delaying the school start time significantly increases daily sleep. The Seattle School District delayed the secondary school start time by nearly an hour. We carried out a pre-/post-research study and show that there was an increase in the daily median sleep duration of 34 min, associated with a 4.5% increase in the median grades of the students and an improvement in attendance.

Abstract: Self-control helps junior high school students behave positively towards themselves and others. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the use of local wisdom in the cublak-cublak suweng game to the junior high school student self-control training. The research subjects were 8 junior high school students in Malang City using one group pretest-posttest design. Measurements used the Self-Control Scale and were analyzed by the Wilcoxon test and paired t-test. The results showed a significant difference in the improvement of junior high school students' self-control. Positive values of the cublak-cublak suweng game are internalized so that they can improve the management of their thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The suggestion given is more extensive testing of the same student characteristics.

Within individual factors that affect academic achievement, personality traits have been the least explored eventhough there is evidence that suggest conscientiousness, neuroticism and self-efficacy are direct contributors ofacademic achievement. We used a sample of 725 Mexican public high school students (Mage =18, SDage =1.09,59% female) to test three Path Analysis models based on those proposed by Stajkovic, Bandura, Locke, Lee andSergent, (2018). Although the models present very similar fit statistics and explanatory power, the intrapersonalmodel is more parsimonious, presents better fit indices and was therefore chosen as our final model. The modelidentifies middle school GPA, self-efficacy, neuroticism and conscientiousness as direct predictors of high schoolacademic achievement, and both extraversion and academic self-concept as indirect predictors when mediatedby self-efficacy. Students can use the power of their own self-efficacy beliefs as support for staying in school, boosting their aptitudes and enhancing previously acquired knowledge. We would suggest the addition of stronger correlates to high school academic achievement such as self-control as well as experimental data on how easy cognitions and capabilities can change in the sample.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new scale, Smartphone addiction scale for Student (SAS-S) was developed to measure the level of smartphone addiction in high school students. A total of 32 item scales were developed through literature studies. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is used to examine the structure of factors formed in this scale. The results show the Smartphone addiction scale for Student (SAS-S) has 22 good items from 6 factor structures that are formed, including: (1) Self Control Disorder, (2) loss of time, (3) sleep disturbances, (4) can not be without smartphones, (5) changes in feelings and, (6) concerned smartphone. SAS-S is a good scale that can be used by any high school student. Another point also shows that the scale of smartphone addiction for high school students has a strong level of validity and reliability.
