Os ambientes costeiros são extremamente dinâmicos, neles convergem processos terrestres, oceânicos e atmosféricos, que alteram constantemente suas características. Um dos principais desafios da geologia, oceanografia e engenharia costeiras e compreender como e porque estas mudanças ocorrem. Por outro lado à ocupação das zonas costeiras é complexa, diversificada e gera numerosos conflitos. Apesar das diversas iniciativas para diminuir estes conflitos ainda é necessário percorrer um longo caminho para resolver os problemas. Ainda faltam definições importantes tais como: Que litoral nos queremos? Qual é o litoral ideal e qual é possível de ser construído? Como gerir a zona litorânea? Ainda precisamos entender melhor como funciona o litoral do ponto de vista geológico e oceanográfico; mas, sobretudo, devemos entender as inter-relações com as dinâmicas biológicas, econômicas e sociais, políticas, legais e institucionais. Physical aspects of coastal environments’ dynamics: uses and conflicts Abstract Coastal environments are extremely dynamic. They are the meeting point of land, ocean, and atmospheric processes that are constantly changing their features. One of the main challenges posed to geology, oceanography, and coastal engineering is the understanding of how and why these changes occur. Conversely, the occupation of coastal zones is complex, diversified, and leads to many conflicts. Despite the numerous attempts at reducing these conflicts, we are still a long way from solving these problems. Important definitions are still missing: What kind of coast do we want? What is the ideal coastal area like and what can be built on it? How do we manage coastal areas? We still need to understand better how the coastline works geologically and oceanographically. But above all else, we need to understand its interrelationships with biologic, economic, social, political, legal, and institutional dynamics.

This article aims at a brief evaluation of the ECEP-symposium from the viewpoint of ecology. From this viewpoint first of all the importance of coastal zones, and more especially estuaries for man and other life is emphasized. Trial and error in coastal engineering and coastal management is illustrated with some examples derived from the papers of this symposium. On the basis of some rough cost/benefit calculations it becomes clear that without integration of ecological aspects, from the beginning to the end, expensive and unforseen additional expenditures may result with costs comparable or even many times higher than the original project costs. Attention is focussed on the lessons to be learned from the papers. The major observations are briefly classified in order of importance. The main conclusion is first of all to handle carefully the integrity of coastal environments, with special attention for estuaries, and to find solutions for society's problems and wishes without disrupting modifications or transformations. But in doing so the process of change requires a close control in terms of planned modification or transformation, an integral ecosystem approach and an adaptive environmental management strategy. In this relation a new management and design strategy is proposed, with the recognition that we are dealing with a process. It is an open ended strategy which requires adaption to new unforeseen events in decision making or in (new) environments. In conclusion a number of statements are presented.

Objective: This article describes and analyzes the main concepts of coastal ecosystems, these as a result of research concerning land-use change assessments in coastal areas. Design/Methodology/Approach: Scientific articles were searched using keywords in English and Spanish. Articles regarding land-use change assessment in coastal areas were selected, discarding those that although being on coastal zones and geographic and soil identification did not use Geographic Information System (GIS). Results: A GIS is a computer-based tool for evaluating the land-use change in coastal areas by quantifying variations. It is analyzed through GIS and its contributions; highlighting its importance and constant monitoring. Limitations of the study/Implications: This research analyzes national and international scientific information, published from 2007 to 2019, regarding the land-use change in coastal areas quantified with the digital GIS tool. Findings/Conclusions: GIS are useful tools in the identification and quantitative evaluation of changes in land-use in coastal ecosystems; which require constant evaluation due to their high dynamism.

AbstractObjectivesWe examined the intention to comply with mandatory hurricane evacuation orders among respondents living in coastal areas with pronounced poverty by demographic and location characteristics.MethodsA 3-county door-to-door survey was conducted with 1 randomly selected resident per household. Households were selected using a 2-stage cluster sampling strategy and stratified by county. The final sample included 3088 households in 100 census tracts across 3 counties.ResultsFindings suggest that the majority of residents living in areas prone to hurricanes intend to comply with mandatory evacuation orders regardless of income level. Variation in intention to comply with mandatory evacuation orders is shown by age, gender, ethnicity, education, acculturation, county, and distance from shoreline.ConclusionsThe demonstrated high intention to comply with evacuation orders in impoverished areas suggests a need for improved planning to evacuate the most vulnerable residents. Demographic and location characteristics associated with decreased intention to comply may be considered for targeting messages and education before disasters to modifying intentions and plans to evacuate. Analysis of land, its carrying capacity and development strategy of seaweed cultivation in Labakkang, Pangkajene Regency. This study attempts to: (1) analyze the suitability of coastal land that appropriate for seaweed cultivation, (2) determine the carrying capacity of the land for seaweed cultivation, (3) formulate strategies and policies that appropriate for seaweed cultivation. This study used biophysical field survey to assess the region, analyze the suitability of the land as well as the carrying capacity of the area by using a geographic information system. Furthermore, the research analyzed the strategy and policy of development of seaweed cultivation with A'WOT analysis approach. The results of the evaluation of the suitability of land for seaweed cultivation in coastal areas showed that Labakkang has potential approximately 1632.876 ha. The area is suitable for seaweed cultivation activities around 1035.54 ha, and unsuitable area around 597.336 ha. For carrying capacity of seaweed cultivation in the coastal area of Labakkang is for 40.55 units. The priority development strategy of seaweed cultivation is strengthening institutions to make a sustainable seaweed cultivation in Labakkang.

Coastal erosion is the process of land erosion in coastal areas due to waves and ocean currents which reduce land and can adversely affect socio-economic activities in coastal areas. Coastal erosion risk assessment in the estuary is a development of previous research, because the erosion and accretion processes do not only occur along the shoreline, but also on the side facing river water bodies, due to the confluence of fluvial and marine processes. The landward shift of the shoreline in the Muara Asam Asam coastal area has reached 90 meters in the last 28 years, and has been detrimental because the area is a densely populated area with major economic activities in the fisheries and agriculture sectors. This study aims to determine the coastal erosion risk level zones based on the relationship among vulnerability and consequence parameters, through distance decay weighted based method. The results indicate that Muara Asam Asam has high risk zones of coastal erosion, especially in densely populated residential areas and dry land agriculture on the west side of the estuary, due to the lack of implementation of preventive measures through hard coastal structure and coastal zoning policy to protect socio-economic activities and coastal ecological environments.

<p><em>This study aims to determine the potential of coastal areas in ecotourism development through a spatial approach using Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) analysis. The benefits related to the use of geographic information technology will conceptually provide the right solution for planning and regional development in ecotourism development.  Activities carried out include collecting data in the field related to physical and non-physical factors in coastal areas through surveys and mapping, then analyzing data in a Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) and designing geographic information systems in the form of mapping on 1) physical, artistic potential, and tourist activities, 2) accessibility (transportation), 3) information and accommodation services.  The contribution of this research is to provide information and input for the government to facilitate and determine the planning and development of ecotourism in the coastal area of Talaud Regency on the island of Sara. It can increase regional or regional income, participation, and support in managing and utilizing coastal regions.</em></p>

A new species of Scutalus Albers, 1850 (Gastropoda: Bulimulidae), Scutalus chango sp. n., is described from a coastal area of northern Chile. Empty shells of this new species were found buried in sand and under boulders and rocks in the foothills of the Chilean Coastal Range at Paposo, Región de Antofagasta. This new species is distinguished from all other Chilean terrestrial snails by its slender shell with a flared and reflected aperture, and by the presence of a columellar fold. This is the first record of Scutalus in Chile, and the southernmost record for this endemic South American bulimulid genus. The presence of this species in Paposo highlights the need for further research and for conservation guidelines in coastal areas of northern Chile, which have comparatively high levels of biodiversity and endemism.

Developing countries are always faced with various economic development challenges (Todaro, 2000). Development of social economic Infrastructures has an important factor to influence the level of Gross Domestic Product. In coastal areas, infrastructure development is low and not optimal utilization. This study aims to determine the effects of development of social economic Infrastructures to the economy of coastal area in East Java Province during the perion 2008-2015. This study uses secondary data and samples taken by purposive random sampling technique that is the district/city of Banyuwangi, Jember, Probolinggo, Trenggalek, Sumenep, Sampang, Bangkalan, Lamongan, Gresik, Malang, dan kota Surabaya. This study uses panel data Fixed Effects Model (FEM) method with Generalized Least Square (GLS) cross section weight.The results of this study indicate that the variable of number school building, roads, and electricities significantly and positively effect to the economy of coastal area in East Java Province.

Sinop is a province located at the Black Sea region and it is rich in scenic beauty and cultural values and has potential touristic resources. Moreover, it is one of the most prominent port towns in the Black Sea region. The area, which can be qualified as the most important and prominent image region of the city, comprise the coastal land use line of the province. However, the city fails to utilize this advantage. The master plan of the city has substantially changed through the years. The present study aimed to determine the changes in the master plans of the city through the years, the distribution of the coastal land use areas and changes in the utilization of the coastal areas through the years. Evaluating the current administrative competence/constraints in the coastal area with respect to the data obtained in the study is also among the goals of the study. Furthermore, by taking the impact of environmental factors on the ratio of the land use areas into consideration, examining these data in terms of coastal management planning to create habitats that better suit the vital requirements is another prospect of the study. In addition, the evaluation of some coastal area-associated issues including the extent of the effect of current erosion issues on the development of the coastal area was also included in the study. The percentage of the current functional coastal areas in the province, the distribution of the number of building floors and the changes in these data by years were also investigated. For these evaluations, zoning revisions and 1/2000, 1/5000 and 1/10000 maps were examined to determine the coastal area zoning changes and filling areas. Fieldworks were carried out in the coastal area of the city to determine and observe the state of the area. The data was collected by contacting relevant institutions and organizations and carrying out fieldworks. Considering the data obtained in the study, measures to remedy the zoning deficiencies in the coastal area and the city center were proposed. The obtained data and evaluations obtained revealed that the province is in need of new and sustainable planning and there is a necessity to include implementations that are based on integrated coastal area management principals.

Despite the recent invasion and wide spread of Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in Europe, little is known regarding its population trends in coastal areas of the southern Mediterranean countries. Using adult trapping and fruit sampling, we studied the population dynamics of D. suzukii in coastal and mainland (semi-highland) cherry orchards of Greece, from 2018 to 2020. Adults were captured in traps baited with apple cider vinegar, placed in conventional and unmanaged sweet-cherry orchards, and in neighbouring wild growing hosts. Sampling of sweet-cherry fruit to assess infestation levels was conducted from early and late-ripening cherry cultivars in both areas. Adults were captured throughout the year in the coastal area with two peaks registered in spring and late-autumn. Captures were nearly zero during the hot summer months. Flight activity exhibited only one peak in autumn at the mainland area, and ceased during winter and spring. Captures in wild hosts were lower during the sweet-cherry ripening period than later in the season. Higher sweet-cherry infestation levels were recorded in the coastal than in the mainland area and in unmanaged than in commercial orchards. Both early and late-ripening cultivars were highly susceptible to D. suzukii infestation in the coastal area. Infestation rates were higher in late-ripening cultivars than in early-ripening ones in the mainland area. We conclude that D. suzukii has well adapted to the Mediterranean climate of Greece, and is able to progressively exploit several crops and wild hosts of mainland and coastal areas.
