Maturity stages of round herring Etrumeus teres were divided anatomically into six stages. Monthly distribution of such maturity stages showed that E. teres had prolonged spawning season extended from December to May for females and to July for males. The observed sex ratio was 1 : 2 (male: female). Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values were high during breeding season for both sexes. Hepatosomatic index (HIS) values for females increased from December to April and from December to July for males. Both sexes of E. teres showed the same correlation between GSI and HSI during their breeding season. The absolute and relative fecundity increased with increasing of length and weight. Histologically, the ovarian cycle of E. teres was classified into six stages and the testicular cycle into five stages. Female of E. teres was a multiple spawner and had prolonged spawning season with a group-synchronous ovarian which contained oocytes at all stages of development. Also, different sizes of spermatocytes at different developmental stages of maturation were observed during the same season. This may reflect the suitability of the specific reproductive behavior of male and its adaptation to the prolonged spawning season with females.

The objective of the present study is to describe the phases of gonadal development and determine the spawning season of Schizothorax curvifrons in River Jhelum Kashmir. A total of 298 fish specimen were studied to analyse the gonadosomatic index and maturity stages of S. curvifrons. Five maturity stages namely Immature phase, Preparatory phase, Maturing phase, Ripe/spawning phase and Spent phase were observed in the gonads. Based on GSI values and gonadal conditions, April to June appears to be the spawning season for S. curvifrons

Red gurnard, Chelidonichthys kumu, were sampled by long-lining and from a fish processing factory to investigate the seasonal cycle of reproduction in a population from north-eastern New Zealand. Female red gurnard showed changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and frequencies of stages of ovarian development consistent with spawning from spring (September) until autumn (May). Peak GSI (approximately 6%) occurred in late spring or early summer, and minimum GSI (approximately 1%) occurred in winter (June). Blood samples were taken from live fish caught on long-lines, and seasonal changes in plasma concentrations of oestradiol-17� (E2) and testosterone (T) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Plasma E2 and T reached maximum concentrations of 1.99 ng mL-1 and 2.06 ng mL-1, respectively, as GSI levels peaked, and then declined as GSI decreased over summer. Plasma E2 and T increased again as GSI began to increase prior to the next spawning season. Maximum hepatosomatic index (HSI) occurred in association with gonadal recrudescence. HSI decreased significantly as the spawning season progressed and showed a significant but irregular increase as recrudescence occurred prior to the following spawning season.

The reproductive features of four commercially important species of the Diplodus genus were studied in the Gulf of Tunis to contribute to better fisheries management on the local scale. The study was specifically aimed to estimate sex-ratio and size at first maturity, to determine spawning season, to analyse hepatic and muscular energy reserve changes and to highlight possible regional difference over the Diplodus geographical distribution. A total of 570 Diplodus vulgaris (two-banded seabream), 428 Diplodus annularis (annular seabream), 350 Diplodus sargus sargus (white seabream) and 218 Diplodus puntazzo (sharpsnout seabream) were collected from the commercial catches of the artisanal fleet between October 2004 and June 2006. Male:female ratio was initially skewed in favour of females for the four Diplodus species and especially among larger-sized individuals. Length and age at first maturity was 17.4 ± 0.2 cm total length (TL) (4 years) for D. vulgaris, 9.7 cm TL (2 years) for D. annularis, 21.0 ± 0.3 cm TL (4 years) for D. s. sargus, 21.5 ± 0.2 cm TL (3 years) for D. puntazzo and a recommendation is made for the increasing of the captured length. According to the monthly succession of gonad maturity stages and the yearly gonadosomatic index (GSI) fluctuation, the spawning season of Diplodus species present a temporal succession along the year. The two-banded seabream has a winter spawning period, the white seabream is mainly a spring spawner, the annular seabream spawns essentially in summer months and the spawning of sharpsnout seabream takes place in autumn. Generally, hepatosomatic index presented an inverse trend to GSI in relation to the breeding activity. The condition factor showed significant monthly variations affected by the sexual cycle of the Diplodus species.

Abstract Catfish are an important component of demersal fisheries in the Persian Gulf. This study describes reproductive aspects in the four common species of catfish, namely Netuma thalassina (Rüppell, 1837), Netuma bilineata (Valenciennes, 1840), Plicofollis dussumieri (Valenciennes, 1840), and Plicofollis layardi (Günther, 1866) collected from coastal areas of the Persian Gulf during spring and winter 2017. A total of 495 fishes were collected, including 151 N. thalassina, 12 N. bilineata, 212 P. dussumieri, and 120 P. layardi. The four species showed significant differences in total length as a measure of body size. Total length of these four species also differed significantly between the four seasons and between the sexes. Three species, i.e., N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi showed an overall female-biased sex ratio, while the sex ratio of N. bilineata did not differ from the expected equal proportions. The patterns of gonad development, gonadosomatic index, and hepatosomatic index of the four species showed that the breeding season of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi was probably during winter. N. bilineata showed a different pattern; its breeding season is therefore expected to be spring. The size at first maturity of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, N. bilineata, and P. layardi, was 44.99, 30.55, 29.60, and 27.01 cm, respectively. This study provides essential information for correct management during the reproductive cycle to maintain a healthy stock of these fishes.

Abstract Egg production methods have been used successfully in the provision of advice for fisheries management. These methods need accurate and unbiased estimates of fecundity. We explore the reproductive strategy of horse mackerel and estimation of fecundity. Fecundity and fecundity regulation in relation to condition was investigated over a number of years. Fulton's K, lipid content, and hepatosomatic index increased after the start of spawning, though decreased again at the end of spawning. The increase in the gonadosomatic index, fecundity, and body condition after the onset of spawning suggests that horse mackerel utilizes food resources during the spawning season and might be an income breeder. However, the decline in K and lipid before the spawning season suggests that the first batch of oocytes is developed on stored energy. Fecundity varied between years and within a spawning season. Over latitude, variations in fecundity were small. K and lipid content are not reliable indices as proxy for fecundity. Batch fecundity appears to be heterogeneous across the spawning season but homogeneous across latitude. The homogeneity of batch fecundity over latitude could indicate that the daily egg production method is an appropriate approach for estimating the abundance of a wide ranging species, as horse mackerel.

Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is an important marine fish both in Europe and North China. Although there are plenty of studies on the reproduction of turbot, the complete cytological process of spermatogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the submicroscopic structure of total 23 types of male germ cells throughout the breeding season, with a relatively complete process of the primary spermatocytes. We found that the spermatid tail formed early at Spermatid II, and there were at least 16 spherical mitochondria in the spermatozoa. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) both peaked during the breeding season. Preliminary analysis showed that the vitality of mature sperm was negatively correlated with the proportion of sperm deformity. The serum 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), testosterone (T), 17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α,20β-DHP), and 17β-estradiol (E2) all increased during the maturity period, with the change of T content most noticeable. Whereas in the testis, an overall high level of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) was more remarkable. The expression and localization of androgen receptor (AR) mRNA showed that the AR was highly expressed at the stages of II (15 – 70 g), with a slight rebound at the mature stages [IV(2200 g) to V(2500 g)], whose change was ahead to the changes of T and 11-KT. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed that the AR mainly distributed in but not limited to Sertoli cells. This study represents the most complete overview of the reproductive cycle and spermatogenesis of turbot, which provides an important reference for the reproduction research and the guidance of flatfish breeding.

Abstract Silver carp, Hypophthalmichtys molitrix (Cyprinidae), is the most important freshwater fish in Algerian aquaculture. No natural spawning is observed in Algerian water bodies. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating silver carp reproduction in the wild in Algeria. This investigation can contribute tools to facilitate successful artificial reproduction. Macroscopic and histological analysis of the gonads was conducted, and the monthly distribution of maturity stages and oocyte diameters were monitored in an aggregate sample of 130 male and female silver carp, H. molitrix, (450-710 mm total length). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) ranged from 2.76 to 18.88% in females and from 0.34 to 1.85% in males. The female GSI values were the highest from June to August indicating the onset of the spawning season. The histological structures of the gonads revealed five different developmental stages in females and three stages in males. The oogenesis stages were the perinucleolar stage, the yolk vesicle stage, the primary yolk, the secondary yolk, and the tertiary yolk. Migratory nuclei and hydrated oocytes, which are considered to be the maturation stage, were not observed. Three different spermatogenesis phases (immature, maturing, and mature testis) were identified, which included final spermatozoa maturation.

A total of 593 samples of Lethrinus lentjan (Lacepede, 1802) were collected from the Red Sea, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to study their productive biology and spawning season of the local population. Sampling was carried out on a monthly basis for a period of one year. The monthly sex ratios indicated that females were dominant throughout the study period, with an overall male:female sex ratio of 1:7.98, although males were larger than females. The highest monthly performance maturation index (PMI), as well as the male and female gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian maturation rate (OMR) were observed in February and March. Histological examination of the gonads confirmed the process of sexual transformation in this fish species, wherein individuals mature first as female, and then change sex to male (protogynous hermaphroditism). Histological sections also showed that the sexual maturation of males of L. lenjtan comprised three main stages, while the sexual development of females could be classified into four main stages. Extended spawning in the form of batches released during different months throughout the year were recorded for this fish species, with the main spawning season in February and March, and an additional, shorter spawning season in September.

An experiment was designed to study the effects of curcumin and thyroxine hormone supplementation in the diet to improve the reproductive performance of catfish broodstock by improving egg quality that eventually increases the production of seedlings. Catfish used in this experiment were supplemented with curcumin and thyroxine hormone through their feeds for 12 weeks. The results showed that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the hepatosomatic index (HSI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), percentage of gonad maturity, total cholesterol concentration in the spawned eggs, high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration in the spawned eggs, fertilization rate of spawned eggs, and hatching rate of fertilized eggs.  However, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the concentration of vitellogenin in the spawned eggs, egg diameter of the spawned eggs, and the triglycerides contents of spawned eggs. It was concluded that curcumin and thyroxine supplementations of African catfish increased vitellogenin concentrations and diameters of spawned eggs that have great potential to improve the reproductive performance.
