Using 1891-1997 data of cyclonic storm positions an attempt is made to study probability of a storm located at about 500 kms in the Bay from the coast to strike or threaten a given station or a given state. It is found that probable location of formation of storms affecting Tamil Nadu coast is 9.3° N / 85.0° E in the month of October and November, for the storms affecting Andhra Pradesh is around 11.5° N/87. 0° E in May and October and for the storms affecting Orissa is 16. 0° N / 89. 5° E in May and October. The storms affecting West Bengal have their origin around 14.8° N / 88. 6° E in May and 17.0° N / 88. 8° E in October. It is also found that the track of a given storm during post monsoon months (October-December) depends on the track of the earlier storm formed in the same season over Bay. Mean direction of storm over the Bay of Bengal is estimated based on the mean direction of the storm formed earlier in the Bay by a regression equation.

A study has been undertaken to find out different characteristics like frequency, intensity, movement, region of occurrence etc. of low pressure systems (LPS) including low, depression and cyclonic storm etc. developing over Orissa and neighbouring sea and land regions during excess and deficient monsoon  rainfall months (June – September) over Orissa. The study is based on data of 20 years (1980-1999). The principal objective of this study is to find out the contribution of LPS to extreme monsoon rainfall activity over Orissa.   The number of LPS days rather than frequency of formation of LPS over different regions better explain the excess and deficient rainfall over Orissa. The excess rainfall over Orissa during June is not significantly related with the number of LPS days. Significantly less than normal number of LPS days over northwest (NW) Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal (GWB) and higher number of LPS days over west central (WC) Bay off north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) cause deficient rainfall over Orissa during June. While significantly higher than normal number of LPS days over NW Bay and Orissa leads to excess rainfall during July, less than normal number of LPS days over WC Bay off NCAP is associated with excess rainfall during August. The less number of LPS days over Orissa due to less frequent movement of LPS across Orissa from the Bay of Bengal leads to deficient rainfall over Orissa during both July and August. Significantly higher/less than normal number of LPS days over NW Bay leads to excess/deficient rainfall over Orissa during September.

Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and from the available data on tracks of the storms from India Meteorological Department for the period 1981-2005 an attempt is made to understand the intensification of storms and their movements in the Bay of Bengal during post-monsoon season. It is noticed that in the month of October only 12 % of the cyclonic storms weakened whereas in November and December it is 28 % and 41 % respectively. Cyclonic storms moving in a northeast direction weaken in all the months of post-monsoon season. Most of the westward moving storms do not undergo weakening. In the Bay of Bengal, SST and relative humidity are not responsible for weakening of the storms except in December but wind shear is responsible for weakening. The orientation of isotherms of SST of Bay of Bengal influences the direction of motion.  During the years when the storms are predominantly moving west/northwest the SST over the Bay of Bengal is about 1.0° C warmer than the years when the storms are predominantly moving in north/northeastward. If the isotherms of SST are oriented southwest-northeast with higher value in the east then system may move in north or northeastward and on such occasions east Bay of Bengal is warmer than west Bay of Bengal.

The role of EI-Nino in modulating tropical cyclone motion over Bay of Bengal during post monsoon season has been examined. Storms which formed during the years 1901-1987 have been classified into recuriving or those of which crossing north of 17° N and non-recurving or those of which crossing south of 17° N the east coast of India. It has been found that in most of the cases (87 %) during EI-Nino years, the tropical cyclones which formed over Bay of Bengal crossed south of 17° N, i.e. south Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu coast, whereas tropical cyclones, ed during the year prior to the EI-Nino years [El- Nino (-1 ) year] are seen crossing mostly (in 79% of cases) either h of 17°N or recurving m northeastward direction. In other years this kind of behaviour is not generally onseerved. The correlation between southern oscillation indices and the fractional values of storms crossing south of 170 N for the period 1901-1987 (n=87) is found to be ---0.63 which is significant at 1 per cent level.

Leafhopper genera and species of the tribe Mukariini from the Indian subcontinent are revised. Nine genera and 22 species including two new genera, one new subgenus and 12 new species are dealt with. The new taxa described are Aalinga gen. nov. with its type species Aalinga brunoflava sp. nov. (India: Andaman Islands), Buloria indica sp. nov. (India: Karnataka). Buloria zeylanica sp. nov. (Sri Lanka), Flatfronta bella sp. nov. (India: Karnataka; Bangladesh), Mohunia bifurcata sp. nov. (Myanmar), Mukaria omani sp. nov. (India: Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh), Mukaria vakra sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Mukariella gen. nov. with its type species Mukariella daii sp. nov. (India: Manipur), Myittana (Benglebra) cornuta sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Myittana (Myittana) distincta sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Myittana (Savasa) subgen. nov. with its type species Myittana (Savasa) constricta sp. nov. (India: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand) and Scaphotettix arcuatus sp. nov. (India: West Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram). Genera Buloria Distant (new placement), Crispina Distant (new placement) and Myittana Distant (new placement) are placed in the tribe Mukariini. Genus Mohunia is redefined based on the study of its type species. Benglebra Mahmood & Ahmed 1969 is synonymised with Myittana Distant 1908 and considered as its subgenus. Myittana (Benglebra) alami (Mahmood & Ahmed) comb. nov., Myittana (Savasa) bipunctata (Mahmood & Ahmed) comb. nov.. Myittana (Benglebra) introspina (Chen & Yang 2007) comb. nov. and Mukariella bambusana (Li & Chen) comb. nov. are proposed; the first two species were earlier placed in the genus Benglebra, the third species in the genus Mohunia and the fourth in the genus Mukaria. Genera Flatfronta Chen & Li and Myittana are new records for India and Scaphotettix striata Dai & Zhang is a new record for the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. All taxa dealt with are described and illustrated and keys for genera and their species are also given.
