The prevalence of complete edentulism varies from country to country and from one region to another. Previous studies have reported the high prevalence of significant radiographic findings in edentulous patients. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of complete edentulism retrospectively and to evaluate the frequency and location of significant radiographic findings on panoramic radiographs in edentulous jaws of dental patients in northeastern Turkey. Methods: The digital panoramic images of all ≥35 year-old patients admitted to our faculty from January 2014 to August 2015 were evaluated. The prevalence of complete edentulism was determined among 8314 panoramic images retrospectively. Radiographic findings identified as impacted teeth, retained roots, radiopaque, and radiolucent areas detected in panoramic radiographs of completely edentulous patients (CEP) were recorded. The obtained data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and cross-tabs. Chi-square test was employed to evaluate the statistical significance of the results at 0.05 levels. Results: A total of 8314 panoramic images were examined, and 508 (6.11%) CEP were defined. The prevalence of edentulism was higher (24.85%) among the patients older than 64 years old. A total of 206 radiographic findings were detected on panoramic images of CEP. The prevalence values of retained roots, impacted teeth, radiopacities, and radiolucencies were 18.9%, 7.09%, 2.76%, and 1.57%, respectively. Conclusions: Given the high frequency of significant radiographic findings, the radiographic examination of CEP should be performed with consideration of the cumulative effects of radiation.

Nonresorbable sintered ceramic hydroxylapatite (HA) is widely employed for filling defects in jaw bone. The small particles used for alveolar ridge augmentation in edentulous patients or for infrabony defects due to periodontal disease tend to scatter when implanted using water or saline as the vehicle. Larger blocks of this material used for filling sockets after tooth extraction don't fit well. Studies in our laboratory where we compared bovine serum albumin, collagen and plaster of Paris as binders to prevent particle scatter during implantation suggested that plaster was most useful for this purpose. In addition to preventing scatter of the particles, plaster enables the formation of implants of any size and.shape either prior to or during surgery. Studies with the PATS reaction have indicated that plaster acts as a scaffold for the incorporation of HA particles into bone in areas where the implant contacts either host bone or periosteum. The shape and integrity of the implant is maintained by the plaster component until it is replaced over a period of days by fibrovascular tissue.

Abstract The incidence of cervical and lumbar fusion surgery has increased in the past twenty years, and during follow-up some of these patients develop changes at the adjacent segment. Recognizing that adjacent segment degeneration and disease may occur in the future does not alter the rating for a cervical or lumbar fusion at the time the patient's condition is determined to be at maximum medical improvement (MMI). The term adjacent segment degeneration refers to the presence of radiographic findings of degenerative disc disease, including disc space narrowing, instability, and so on at the motion segment above or below a cervical or lumbar fusion. Adjacent segment disease refers to the development of new clinical symptoms that correspond to these changes on imaging. The biomechanics of adjacent segment degeneration have been studied, and, although the exact mechanism is uncertain, genetics may play a role. Findings associated with adjacent segment degeneration include degeneration of the facet joints with hypertrophy and thickening of the ligamentum flavum, disc space collapse, and translation—but the clinical significance of these radiographic degenerative changes remains unclear, particularly in light of the known presence of abnormal findings in asymptomatic patients. Evaluators should not rate an individual in anticipation of the development of changes at the level above a fusion, although such a development is a recognized possibility.

Summary Aim: To prevent orthopedic sequelae in acute hematogenous pyogenic osteomyelitis (AHPO) of infants early diagnosis, recognition of recurrence and effective therapy is needed. This retrospective study of 47 infants with bacteriologically confirmed AHPO concerned with an analysis of the diagnostic value of systemic serum parameters compared to bone scintigraphy (BSC). Methods: AHPO was characterized initially and during the course of disease by clinical findings, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), total and differential white blood cell (WBC) count, BSC, and plain radiography. Results: CRP was the most effective serum parameter for follow- up of disease. The first sign of BSC to signal adequate response to antibiotic treatment was the decrease or normalization of hyperperfusion. Escape from therapy or poor prognosis, even when the serum parameters were normalized, was signaled by the recurrence of focal hyperperfusion and the persistent or increasing local uptake ratios on the 3-h-image over 6 weeks during a course of antibiotic treatment. Conclusion: Antibiotic treatment masks the clinical presentation, and the radiographic findings, causes non-characteristic laboratory findings, but do not prevent the scintigraphic visualization; BSC and serum parameters used in the right completion are the most successful and efficient modalities for follow-up of AHPO. Maintenance of antibiotic therapy should be done until BSC findings have reverted to normal.

AbstractIn this article, we reported a case of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type I noted to have tetraventricular hydrocephalus with Blake's pouch cyst at 8 months of age following intrathecal nusinersen therapy. The association of hydrocephalus with SMA is rarely reported in the literature. Development of hydrocephalus after intrathecal nusinersen therapy is also reported in some cases, but a cause–effect relationship is not yet established. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of a patient with SMA type I and hydrocephalus, to review similar cases reported in the literature, and to explore the relationship between nusinersen therapy and development of hydrocephalus. The clinical presentation and radiographic findings of the patient are described and a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted. The adverse effect of communicating hydrocephalus related to nusinersen therapy is being reported and the authors suggest carefully monitoring for features of hydrocephalus developing during the course of nusinersen therapy.

Kurulan ağlar göçlerin devamını sağladığı gibi, göçün yöneldiği merkezlerde daha heterojen nüfus yapılarının ortaya çıkmasına yol açmıştır.ABSTRACT IN ENGLISHSocial Network Analysis of Migration Inter Provinces In Turkey with Nodexl The internal migrations which started in Turkey in the middle of the 20th century have gained permanency with the migration networks that were established at the time and reached dimensions which have the potential to change the rural-urban distribution of the population within the country.  The study aims to analyze the magnitude of the incoming and outgoing migration flow at the provincial scale based on the population data for place of birth according to place of residence by using directional networks. Place of residence according to place of birth at the provincial scale data for 2015 published by TÜİK was used in the study. A single mode, directional and weighted migration network created with NodeXL to examine the migration flows between the source and target has a statistically complete network structure. The network graphs and statistics show that the migrations have taken place from east to west and Istanbul has a view as dominant of the country. It can be argued that internal network structure of Turkish population has  a very complex view because of internal migration in the history of the republic. The established networks have enabled the continuation of migration and have manifested as the emergence of more heterogeneous population structures in centers where migration had been directed.
