The main goal of the paper is to study Celtic (especially Goidelic) words denoting ‘road’, to collect ranked synonyms, to give motivated etymologies, to exercise a diachronic and comparative study of the use of the names of the ‘road’ in Old, Middle and Modern Irish and in Scottish Gaelic (including comparative data from Continental Celtic and Insular Brittonic languages) and to reveal and describe supposed Goidelic innovations (slige, belach, bóthar). The final aim is to introduce Goidelic data into the described scheme of semantic shift.

Comparative study of Ciung Wanara traffic island in Gianyar with Satrya Gatotkaca traffic island In Tuban. Traffic island is an island in the middle of the road that serves to direct the flow of traffic and a waiting place for the user to cross the road. Traffic island of Ciung Wanara in Gianyar and Traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca in Tuban had turned their function of being a place of recreation for the community. The purpose of this study is to invent existing condition of Ciung Wanara and Satrya Gatotkaca traffic island. This study also provides recommendations in the form of designs that can improve the function of the site. The method used in this research was field survey by conducting observation, distributing questioner and doing interview. Research showed that, users in Ciung Wanara traffic island were dominated by student while users who came to the traffic island Satrya Gatotkaca were dominated by employees. The selection of vegetation bettwen the traffic island of Ciung Wanara and traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca very different. Vegetation in the traffic island of Ciung Wanara used more of large size vegetation that can block the view of the user of the vehicle, while the vegetation used in the traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca use lower plants size. The recommendation given in both locations was to add access to traffic island of Ciung Wanara so as to make easier for users to find the right place to cross, while traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca was arraged it crossing space for more convenient and secure for users to passed the crosswalk.

We identify and analyse practices and management regimes around burial and handling of ashes across eight case study towns within six Northern European countries. We analyse management of cemeteries and crematoria gardens, majority practices and provision for minority communities, including various burial types, cremated remains, the re-use of graves, and costs for interments. Comparative data is drawn from analysis of national and local regulations, interviews with stakeholders, and observations at cemeteries and crematoria gardens. The findings show significant variation in national and local regulations and practices for burial and cremation particularly around the re-use of graves, handling of ashes and costs for grave space and cremation. We identify the opportunities and constraints of these variations in terms of accessibility, diversity and equality; and argue for national directions to avoid unequal treatment within nations. Furthermore, we stress the importance of a liberal and inclusive management of European cemeteries and crematoria gardens.

The concept of meaning is a complex one in language study when cultural features are added. This is mandatory because language cannot be completely separated from culture in which case language and culture complement each other. When there are two varieties of a language in a society, i.e. two varieties functioning side by side in a speech community, there is tendency for misconception. It is therefore imperative to make a linguistic comparative study of varieties of such languages. In this paper, a semantic contrastive study is made between Standard British English (SBE) and Nigerian English (NE). The semantic study is limited to aspects of semantics: semantic extension (Kinship terms, metaphors), semantic shift (lexical items considered are ‘drop’ ‘befriend’ ‘dowry’ and escort) acronyms (NEPA, JAMB, NTA) linguistic borrowing or loan words (Seriki, Agbada, Eba, Dodo, Iroko) coinages (long leg, bush meat; bottom power and juju). In the study of these aspects of semantics of SBE and NE lexical terms, conservative statements are made, problems areas and hierarchy of difficulties are highlighted with a view to bringing out areas of differences. The study will also serve as a guide in further contrastive studies in some other levels of languages.

A comparative study of the work performance of normal and schizophrenic workers was undertaken in the Rehabilitation Unit of Cheadle Royal Hospital. (Wadsworth, Scott and Wells, 1961). A group of 12 long-stay schizophrenics with a mean duration of hospitalization of 17 years, ±12·3 were matched with 12 normal subjects recruited to perform a normal industrial task. The task studied was the assembly, by gluing, of crepe to board; one of the initial stages in the manufacture of a carnival hat. The purpose of the study was to obtain comparative data that would help one to produce indices of employability, rather than to make evaluative statements which would relate only to mental hospital standards.

<p>Quiet Life Hypothesis is a concept which ensures the players in an industry achieving and attaining the highest market share. But Quiet life is also possible with the very strong strategic and efficient leadership at CEO level of any organisation. Their tenure makes the organisation to emerge as industry’s behemoth like SBI. The QLH is tested in the Banking sector especially State Bank of India. Nevertheless, to say Ms. Arundhati Bhattacharya took over as CEO of SBI in Oct, 2013 and with her extended tenure till Oct 2017, she made SBI as the most efficient bank among all public sector banks in handling demonetisation, GST and implementing the road map of merger of all associate banks of SBI and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. The legacy of Ms. Arundhati left SBI in an extremely strategically stronger position than before she became CEO. This paper reveals that the exit of hers made SBI reap the benefits of Quiet Life in comparisons with other public and private sector banks in India.</p>

The pavement performance (CBR and modulus of resilient) of the weak chloride-based saline soil was studied by experiment. Samples were made through the static pressure method and vibration method. The test results for the samples under the conditions of non-soaking and soaking made a comparative study. The weak saline soil was analyzed as embankment feasibility. The results showed that: the pavement performance of samples made by vibration method was superior to that of static pressure method; the CBR value and modulus of resilient of samples could meet standard requirements when degree of compaction met the standard requirements. Weak chloride-based saline soil proved to be the road embankment fillers.

In this paper, a comprehensive comparative study on several existing vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI) models is presented with the aim to provide a useful reference to the selection of vehicle and bridge models when conducting the VBI simulation. A simply-supported slab-on-girder highway bridge and the AASHTO HS20-44 vehicle are adopted in the numerical analysis. The bridge is modeled as an Euler–Bernoulli beam, grillage, plate-and-beam system and solid-element system, respectively, while the vehicle is modeled as a moving-force, moving-mass and spring-damper-mass (SDM) system, respectively. Other factors, including the road roughness and the contact condition between the vehicle tire and bridge, are also considered. The effects of different VBI models on the bridge responses are studied and the results from different models are compared in terms of their accuracy, efficiency and suitability. The results show that the accuracy of different types of bridge responses calculated varies with the number of bridge vibration modes used in the simulation. It is also found that the type of element used in the bridge model and the vehicle tire model both have a larger impact on the bridge acceleration than bridge deflection.
