Abstract This chapter discusses planting-seed quality, variety selection, plant population, planting date and row spacing. The goal of crop management is to create the perfect environment for the growth of the crop, where the perfect environment is characterized by the absence of stress or other factors that reduce crop growth and yield. This goal may be impossible or uneconomical to achieve, but that does not detract from its usefulness as a goal. The management practices discussed in this chapter are fundamental components of grain production systems that contribute to reaching the goal of the perfect environment. There are many management options available to an individual producer; selecting the best combination is not always easy and it may be constrained by factors outside the realm of the physiological processes controlling crop yield.

Abstract: The evaluation of seed deterioration is very important to control the quality of the seeds stored. This study aimed to investigate the potential of fast ethanol assay for seed quality assessment of maize stored under different conditions. The first experiment was to determine the incubating temperature, incubating time, and amount of seed used in the assay. The results showed that the best protocol for the detection of headspace ethanol was incubation of 3 g of maize seed with 20% moisture content (wet basis) in a 20 mL gas chromatography vial at 70 °C for 1.5 h. The assay induced approximately 200-700 µg.L-1 of headspace ethanol, which was sufficient to identify seeds with different vigour levels. In the second experiment, the optimal conditions were used for quality assessment in aged maize seed stored for 12 months under different storage conditions. The increase in the ethanol production of stored maize seed under the controlled conditions (15 °C and 20% RH in the hermetic seal) was lower than under ambient conditions. The ethanol production levels of maize seed samples at the start of storage was significantly lesser than at six months storage (p < 0.05). The test limitations in deteriorated seed with different cultivars and ages will be discussed.

In this study, a comparative analysis of seed quality indicators of 1196 hybrid maize seed samples from the main maize-producing areas in China from 2013 to 2018 was carried out. The results showed that the maize seed quality in China had changed obviously in the past six years, and was mainly as follows: The percentage of samples with coated seed in 2015–2018 was higher than 62.8% in 2013 and all exceeded 97%; the sample rate of packaging according to seed number was from 24.5% in 2013 to 58.6% in 2018, and the percentage of samples which met the prescribed quality standards was from 89.2% in 2013 to 98.4% in 2018. Principal component analysis indicated that standard germination energy (SGE), standard germination percentage (SGP), cold test germination percentage (CTGP), accelerated aging test germination percentage (AATGP), and mean field seedling emergence (FSE) were the primary predictors of seed germination and seedling emergence. Meanwhile, combining other statistical methods, regression models of SGE, SGP, CTGP, and AATGP were established to predict the field seedling emergence. Furthermore, seed bulk density and total starch content were correlated with seed vigor, which needs to be further studied. This study offered a theoretical basis and data support to better understand the changes of maize quality in China over the past six years, and provided an important reference to further improve the maize seed quality in the future.

Thousand-seed weight and total germination from the first production year and two seed harvests were measured in tetraploid Italian ryegrass (cv. Tetraflorum) to study variations in seed quality. Four-year field experiments were carried out (2002-2006) in western Serbia and Italian ryegrass was established with three row spacings (20, 40 and 60 cm), four seeding rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 kg ha-1) and using four spring nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1). High seed quality was obtained, except for the first experimental year (2003) and the second seed harvests which yielded the seed of unsatisfactory quality and validity. Applied factors and treatments did not change seed quality significantly unlike environmental conditions of production years which had considerable influence on seed quality.

Two fields of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) seed crops of proprietary cultivars were observed in the Columbia Basin of Washington in July 2020 with 40 and 90% incidence of plants showing stunting and leaf and stem discoloration, sometimes with mild leaf curl. Foliar discoloration ranged from yellow to red and purple. Sweep-netting along the field edges collected one beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus Baker; BLH), the known vector of Beet curly top virus (BCTV), Beet leafhopper transmitted virescence agent (BLTVA) phytoplasma, and Spiroplasma citri, all of which affect Solanaceae and Apiaceae crops in Washington (Crosslin et al. 2006; Johnson and Martin 1998; Lee et al. 2006). Nucleic acids extracted from leaves and petioles of 12 coriander plants (8 from Field 1 and 4 from Field 2) using the Dellaporta method, and from the BLH using the CTAB method (Crosslin et al. 2006) were subjected to PCR assays to detect the BLH-transmitted pathogens which cause yellow and purple discoloration in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus (Hoffm.) Arc.) in this region. BLTVA was targeted using a species-specific nested PCR assay with primers P1 and P7, followed by primers FU5 and BLTVA-int (Crosslin et al. 2006); S. citri was targeted using primers P89-F and P89-R (Yokomi et al. 2008); and BCTV was targeted using curtovirus primers BCTV2-F and BCTV2-R (Strausbaugh et al. 2008). BLTVA and S. citri were not detected in the plants, but curtovirus was detected in 10 of the 12 plants. All three pathogens were detected from the single BLH. A 519 bp region of the curtovirus capsid protein gene was amplified from seven plants (5 from Field 1 and 2 from Field 2) and the BLH, and cloned into TOP10 Escherichia coli cells using the pCR-2.1 TOPO vector (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA). Three clones were sequenced from each sample. For each of six plant samples and the BLH, the three clones were identical and consensus sequences were generated (GenBank Accessions MW234419 to MW234425). For the seventh plant, two clones were identical in sequence (MW234426) and the third contained 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (MW234427). All sequences were subjected to an NCBI BLASTn analysis and showed 98.3 to 99.8% identity with BCTV sequences. Additional PCR assays with primers BMCTV-C1 2213F and BMCTV-C1 2609R (Strausbaugh et al. 2008), targeting the C1 gene of the Worland strain of BCTV, detected BCTV-Worland-like strains in all plants and the BLH, confirming that BCTV was present and indicating that the strain-specific primer pair was more sensitive than the universal curtovirus primers. Yield losses in the two fields were approximately 60%, with reduced seed size but not seed quality. BCTV infections in coriander crops have been observed in the Columbia Basin in 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2013, with yield losses ranging from 10 to 100% per field, though official reports were not made following the diagnoses (Crosslin, du Toit, and Frost, unpublished data). BCTV has caused millions of dollars of losses in the U.S. in crops such as sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris L.), tomato (S. lycopersicum L.), and pepper (S. annuum L.) (Johnson and Martin 1998). This is the first publication of BCTV affecting seed production of the specialty crop C. sativum. The observation of 90% incidence of symptoms in one field suggests that resistant cultivars and/or insect pest management practices are needed to prevent significant impacts of BCTV on coriander seed production in this semi-arid region.

SUMMARYExperiments were conducted in association with farmers during 1977, 1978 and 1979 on a River Estate sandy loam at Valsayn and on a Cunupia clay loam at Piarco, Trinidad, to assess the relative importance of components in a set of practices for wetseason production of ‘yellow shell’ pods of ‘blackeye’ type of cow pea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.). Though the response of the cow pea growth, yield and seed quality characteristics were similar at both locations, crop performance was consistently better at Valsayn and was attributed to more favourable soil conditions and to a lower incidence of pests (mainly Ceratoma beetles), cow pea severe mosaic virus, and weeds. Overall, it was found that pest control was the most important management factor, accounting for a mean yield increase of 144%. The adoption of the improved cultivar, California Blackeye No. 5, increased yield by 77%. Other inputs resulting in significant yield increases were, in order of magnitude, weed control (40%), roguing of mosaic infected plants (37%) and high plant density of 110000 plants/ha (23%). A fertilizer treatment did not significantly increase yield. The results suggest that adoption of the insect control treatment by farmers in their cultivation of an improved cultivar sown at high plant density, the use of herbicide and roguing of mosaic infected plants have practical potential and would be economically justified for the production of high yields and good quality ‘yellow shell’ pods of vegetable cow pea for processing.
