The issues concerning porosity of granular materials, especially plant materials, are considered very important matters in respect of their transport, storage, precise dosing, and tribological properties. The classic method of measuring porosity requires specialized equipment and takes time, thus often being of little use in dynamic production processes. Therefore, there is a growing need for developing new methods for fast porosity measurement. In the article, the authors present an attempt to define a correlation between the selected parameters of the surface texture of plant granular materials and their porosities. To digitize the surface, an optical 3D scanner and specialized software for analysis of the surface topography were used. The results should provide a basis for the development of innovative methods for measuring porosity based on digital image processing (DIA).

The results of studies on external friction concerning granular plant materials that include, among others, grains, seeds of various plants, and powdered plant material, have been applied to the design of machines and devices for transport, sorting, cleaning, and blending. A separate and equally important matter is the storage of these materials in silos. The article presents the influence the surface topography of selected granular materials has upon the force of external friction. The research was performed with a specially designed adapter attached to the testing machine MTS, which is used to determine the external friction force of granular materials rubbing against various surfaces in a function of displacement. To define the topography of the external surface, a 3D scanner and specialized software were used. The authors have attempted to develop a model of friction taking into account the topography of the surface.

We demonstrate methods for estimating shape from texture, for textures which are neither isotropic nor homogeneous. Whereas earlier work assumed either isotropy or homogeneity, we make a more general assumption: the local tangent distribution of the surface texture is invariant with respect to position. We then present a taxonomy of texture types, and a set of methods that can be used to recover surface orientation for each texture type. We define two classes of methods for estimating shape from texture: invariance-seeking methods, and value-seeking methods. These definitions are used to account for the performance of new methods on different classes of texture. The approach outlined in this paper provides a general strategy for generating methods for obtaining shape from texture for known classes of texture.

Composite material is a material constructed of two or more materials that leads with different physical or chemical characteristics. Nano Alumina (NANO AL2O3) and Nano Titanium (NANO TIO2) are normally used to construct the composite material. The fundamental of texture analysis seeks to derive a general efficient and compact quantitative description of textures so that various mathematical operations can be used to achieve, compare and transform of texture characteristics. Many mechanical and physical methods are used to measure the surface characteristics. Some of these methods suffered from accurate description of material surface. In addition, the details of material surface are not clear via applying the traditional methods for surface analyzing. This work is concentrated on combining many functions and steps of image processing method to understand and analyze the surface characteristics of the composite material (Nano Alumina and Nano Titanium). The implemented approach including many steps: image enhancement, texture analysis, edge detection and contour analysis. This approach leads to explain, extract, analyze and evaluate the characteristics of surface texture of the composite material via measuring of mean values for original gray image, adjusted gray image, equalized gray image and adapted gray image. The average mean values of Nano Alumina are 103, 110, 128 and 134 for the applied method respectively. The average mean values of Nano titanium are 120, 123, 125 and 129 respectively. As a conclusion the implemented approach of surface texture analysis indicated that there is a significant improvement at the surface characteristics for both equalization and adaptive methods compared with the adjustment method.

1. The Valmari-Devarda method of estimating nitrates (i.e. distillation with magnesium oxide and Devarda's alloy) is unsatisfactory in presence of organic matter. Attempts to make it quantitative under these conditions by modifications of alkali and temperature proved unsuccessful.2. Two new methods for the estimation of nitrate in plant juices are described. The first depends on the use of Devarda's alloy in cold weakly alkaline solutions, the second on the reducing power of titanous hydroxide, under conditions suitable for use with plant products.
