The paper addresses the issue of actuality in ship hydrodynamics: the estimation of ship’s linear and angular oscillations with respect to the state of equilibrium. The prediction of seakeeping properties raises a question about a relative importance of viscous and free-surface effects (Quérard et al. 2009), yet this question remains of more general importance in fluid mechanics, since it is related to the dynamic characteristics of objects/bodies immersed in a liquid. From a theoretical standpoint, the problem refers to flows with moving boundaries. It can also be considered in terms of fluid-structure interaction (FSI), however, not necessarily linked with the computation of the body deformation and stresses due to the flow. As the Author correctly notices, the computational solution to this problem in its full setup reveals to be extremely costly due to the 3D and unsteady nature of the fluid motion under turbulent flow conditions at nominally high Reynolds numbers (Re~109, as stated by the Author in Tab. 1) in presence of the free surface. For this reason, the full solution, or direct numerical simulation (DNS), of the governing Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations at these Re will remain unfeasible in the foreseeable future; see, e.g., Pozorski (2017) for an estimation of the DNS capability in simple wall-bounded turbulent flows. The situation gets even worse in ship hydrodynamics when a DNS of fluid flow would need to be coupled to the dynamics of the rigid body (of complex geometry, usually).

A solution methodology for complex turbulent flows of industrial interests is developed using Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). IBM combines the efficiency inherent in using a fixed Cartesian grid to compute the fluid motion, along with the ease of tracking the immersed boundary at a set of moving Lagrangian points. IBM relies upon the body force terms added in the momentum equations to represents the complex geometry on a fixed Cartesian mesh. Resolution issues for turbulent flows can be addressed by Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique provided an accurate and robust Subgrid Stress (SGS) model is available. Higher order of numerical accuracy schemes for turbulent flows can be maintained as well as the geometrical complexities can be rendered physically by combining LES with IBM. The proposed methodology is simple and ideally suited for the moving geometries involving no-slip walls with prescribed trajectories and locations. IBM is validated for the laminar flow past a heated cylinder in a channel and LES is validated for the turbulent lid-driven cavity flow. LES-IBM is then is used to render complex geometry of trapped vortex combustor to study fluid mixing inside trapped vortex cavity. To demonstrate the full potential of LES-IBM, a complex moving geometry problem of stator-rotor interaction is solved.

A better understanding of turbulent unsteady flows is a necessary step towards a breakthrough in the design of modern compressors. Owing to high Reynolds numbers and very complex geometry, the flow that develops in such industrial machines is extremely hard to predict. At this time, the most popular method to simulate these flows is still based on a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes approach. However, there is some evidence that this formalism is not accurate for these components, especially when a description of time-dependent turbulent flows is desired. With the increase in computing power, large eddy simulation (LES) emerges as a promising technique to improve both knowledge of complex physics and reliability of flow solver predictions. The objective of the paper is thus to give an overview of the current status of LES for industrial compressor flows as well as to propose future research axes regarding the use of LES for compressor design. While the use of wall-resolved LES for industrial multistage compressors at realistic Reynolds number should not be ready before 2035, some possibilities exist to reduce the cost of LES, such as wall modelling and the adaptation of the phase-lag condition. This paper also points out the necessity to combine LES to techniques able to tackle complex geometries. Indeed LES alone, i.e. without prior knowledge of such flows for grid construction or the prohibitive yet ideal use of fully homogeneous meshes to predict compressor flows, is quite limited today.

This paper provides a discussion of several aspects of the construction of approaches that combine statistical (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, RANS) models with large eddy simulation (LES), with the objective of making LES an economically viable method for predicting complex, high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The first part provides a review of alternative approaches, highlighting their rationale and major elements. Next, two particular methods are introduced in greater detail: one based on coupling near-wall RANS models to the outer LES domain on a single contiguous mesh, and the other involving the application of the RANS and LES procedures on separate zones, the former confined to a thin near-wall layer. Examples for their performance are included for channel flow and, in the case of the zonal strategy, for three separated flows. Finally, a discussion of prospects is given, as viewed from the writer's perspective.

Abstract The turbulent flow in a compressor cascade is calculated by using a new simulation method, i.e., parameter extension simulation (PES). It is defined as the calculation of a turbulent flow with the help of a reference solution. A special large-eddy simulation (LES) method is developed to calculate the reference solution for PES. Then, the reference solution is extended to approximate the exact solution for the Navier-Stokes equations. The Richardson extrapolation is used to estimate the model error. The compressor cascade is made of NACA0065-009 airfoils. The Reynolds number 3.82 × 105 and the attack angles −2° to 7° are accounted for in the study. The effects of the end-walls, attack angle, and tripping bands on the flow are analyzed. The PES results are compared with the experimental data as well as the LES results using the Smagorinsky, k-equation and WALE subgrid models. The numerical results show that the PES requires a lower mesh resolution than the other LES methods. The details of the flow field including the laminar-turbulence transition can be directly captured from the PES results without introducing any additional model. These characteristics make the PES a potential method for simulating flows in turbomachinery with high Reynolds numbers.

Slamming forces on 2D and 3D bodies have been computed based on a CIP method. The highly nonlinear water entry problem governed by the Navier-Stokes equations was solved by a CIP based finite difference method on a fixed Cartesian grid. In the computation, a compact upwind scheme was employed for the advection calculations and a pressure-based algorithm was applied to treat the multiple phases. The free surface and the body boundaries were captured using density functions. For the pressure calculation, a Poisson-type equation was solved at each time step by the conjugate gradient iterative method. Validation studies were carried out for 2D wedges with various deadrise angles ranging from 0 to 60 degrees at constant vertical velocity. In the cases of wedges with small deadrise angles, the compressibility of air between the bottom of the wedge and the free surface was modelled. Studies were also extended to 3D bodies, such as a sphere, a cylinder and a catamaran, entering calm water. Computed pressures, free surface elevations and hydrodynamic forces were compared with experimental data and the numerical solutions by other methods.

AbstractThe recently understood relationship between high-Reynolds-number vortex–wave interaction theory and computationally generated self-sustaining processes provides a possible route to an understanding of some of the underlying structures of fully turbulent flows. Here vortex–wave interaction (VWI) theory is used in the long streamwise wavelength limit to continue the development found at order-one wavelengths by Hall & Sherwin (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 661, 2010, pp. 178–205). The asymptotic description given reduces the Navier–Stokes equations to the so-called boundary-region equations, for which we find equilibrium states describing the change in the VWI as the wavelength of the wave increases from $O(h)$ to $O(Rh)$, where $R$ is the Reynolds number and $2h$ is the depth of the channel. The reduced equations do not include the streamwise pressure gradient of the perturbation or the effect of streamwise diffusion of the wave–vortex states. The solutions we calculate have an asymptotic error proportional to ${R}^{- 2} $ when compared to the full Navier–Stokes equations. The results found correspond to the minimum drag configuration for VWI states and might therefore be of relevance to the control of turbulent flows. The key feature of the new states discussed here is the thickening of the critical layer structure associated with the wave part of the flow to completely fill the channel, so that the roll part of the flow is driven throughout the flow rather than as in Hall & Sherwin as a stress discontinuity across the critical layer. We identify a critical streamwise wavenumber scaling, which, when approached, causes the flow to localize and take on similarities with computationally generated or experimentally observed turbulent spots. In effect, the identification of this critical wavenumber for a given value of the assumed high Reynolds number fixes a minimum box length necessary for the emergence of localized structures. Whereas nonlinear equilibrium states of the Navier–Stokes equations are thought to form a backbone on which turbulent flows hang, our results suggest that the localized states found here might play a related role for turbulent spots.

In this paper, computational results are presented for three-dimensional high-Reynolds number turbulent flows over a simplified submarine model. The simulation is based on the solution of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and two-equation turbulence models by using a preconditioned time-stepping approach. A multiblock method, in which the block loop is placed in the inner cycle of a multi-grid algorithm, is used to obtain versatility and efficiency. It was found that the calculated body drag, lift, side force coefficients and moments at various angles of attack or angles of drift are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Fast convergence has been achieved for all the cases with large angles of attack and with modest drift angles.

Many geological flows involve turbulence, wherein the velocity field involves complex, fluctuating motions superimposed on a mean motion. Flows in natural river channels are virtually always turbulent. Magma flow in dikes and sills, and lava flows, can be turbulent. Atmospheric flows involving eolian transport are turbulent. The complex, convective overturning of fluid in a magma chamber or geyser is a form of turbulence. Thus, a description of the basic qualities of these complex flows is essential for understanding many geological flow phenomena. Turbulent flows generally are associated with large Reynolds numbers. Recall from Chapter 5 that the Reynolds number Re is a measure of the ratio of inertial to viscous forces acting on a fluid element, . . . Re = ρUL/μ . . . . . . (14.1) . . . where the characteristic velocity U and length L are defined in terms of the particular flow system. Thus, turbulence is typically associated, for given fluid density ρ and viscosity μ, with high-speed flows (although we must be careful in applying this generality to thermally driven convective motions; see Chapter 16). A simple, visual illustration of this occurs when smoke rises from a cigar within otherwise calm, surrounding air. The smoke acts as a flow tracer. Smoke molecules at the cigar tip start from rest, since they are initially attached to the cigar. Upward fluid motion, as traced by the smoke, initially is of low speed, and viscous forces have a relatively important influence on its behavior. The flow is laminar; smoke streaklines are smooth and locally parallel. But as the flow accelerates upward, it typically reaches a point where viscous forces are no longer sufficient to damp out destabilizing effects of growing inertial forces, and the flow becomes turbulent, manifest as whirling, swirling fluid motions (see Tolkien [1937]). Throughout this chapter we will consider only incompressible Newtonian fluids. Unfortunately, the complexity of turbulent fluid motions precludes directly using the Navier–Stokes equations to describe them. Instead, we will adopt a procedure whereby the Navier–Stokes equations are recast in terms of temporally averaged or spatially averaged values of velocity and pressure, and fluctuations about these averages.

Abstract This study is based on previous works in a series of numerical studies on submarine hydrodynamics, which involved developing a computational fluid dynamics method to estimate the self-propulsive performance of underwater vehicles. Herein, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency SUBOFF submarine model was adopted as a benchmark. The computational modeling applied was based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model. A body-force propeller method was adopted to model the propulsion. The self-propulsive performance was verified via mesh refinement and validated by comparing the computational solutions with the results obtained from the experiments. The effect of the Reynolds number on the self-propulsive performance was investigated by varying the positions of the stern planes, while the free surface effect was determined by varying the Froude number (Fr) via the volume of fluid method. The computed Taylor wake fraction (w) and hull efficiency (ηH) depended on the Reynolds number as it decreased monotonically. The w and thrust deduction fraction (t) for the model of aft-fitted stern planes were approximately 3–7% and 8–10% higher than those of the baseline and fore-fitted stern planes, respectively. The differences in ηH between the models were insignificant. Regarding the free surface effects, the computations of w, t, and ηH generally decreased with Fr, thus exhibiting several humps and hollows. The computed upward suction force and pitching moment varied from negative to positive and vice versa, depending on Fr.

A theory is presented where the weakly nonlinear analysis of laminar globally unstable flows in the presence of external forcing is extended to the turbulent regime. The analysis is demonstrated and validated using experimental results of an axisymmetric bluff-body wake at high Reynolds numbers, $Re_{D}\sim 1.88\times 10^{5}$, where forcing is applied using a zero-net-mass-flux actuator located at the base of the blunt body. In this study we focus on the response of antisymmetric coherent structures with azimuthal wavenumbers $m=\pm 1$ at a frequency $St_{D}=0.2$, responsible for global vortex shedding. We found experimentally that axisymmetric forcing ($m=0$) couples nonlinearly with the global shedding mode when the flow is forced at twice the shedding frequency, resulting in parametric subharmonic resonance through a triadic interaction between forcing and shedding. We derive simple weakly nonlinear models from the phase-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and show that they capture accurately the observed behaviour for this type of forcing. The unknown model coefficients are obtained experimentally by producing harmonic transients. This approach should be applicable in a variety of turbulent flows to describe the response of global modes to forcing.
