This paper summarises the main results of 10 years of research and development in Humanitarian Demining. The Hudem project focuses on mine detection systems and aims at provided different solutions to support the mine detection operations. Robots using different kind of locomotion systems have been designed and tested on dummy minefields. In order to control these robots, software interfaces, control algorithms, visual positioning and terrain following systems have also been developed. Typical data acquisition results obtained during trial campaigns with robots and data acquisition systems are reported. Lessons learned during the project and future work conclude this paper.

The mapping problem is inherent to digital musical instruments (DMIs), which require, at the very least, an association between physical gestures and digital synthesis algorithms to transform human bodily performance into sound. This article considers the DMI mapping problem in the context of the creation and performance of a heterogeneous computer chamber music piece, a trio for violin, biosensors, and computer. Our discussion situates the DMI mapping problem within the broader set of interdependent musical interaction issues that surfaced during the composition and rehearsal of the trio. Through descriptions of the development of the piece, development of the hardware and software interfaces, lessons learned through rehearsal, and self-reporting by the participants, the rich musical possibilities and technical challenges of the integration of digital musical instruments into computer chamber music are demonstrated.

This chapter describes a service-learning partnership between two refugee resettlement agencies and a school of nursing. The partnership has successfully completed its goals of both service and learning over many semesters to the present. This community-based learning opportunity has entailed a variety of health interventions with refugee families while the learning has involved essential competencies of cross-cultural nursing, insights into social determinants of health, and developing confidence in being able to problem solve in a complex mix of health, social systems, poverty, language, and cultural barriers. In addition, assignments connected with this community engagement have encouraged students to develop an awareness of global health issues while intervening locally with their assigned refugee family, thus thinking and acting globally. The authors will discuss lessons learned from this long-term relationship and suggested directions for future work.

This chapter introduces a framework intended for facilitating the implementation of Web-based adaptive hypermedia systems. The framework is orthogonal to Web “serving” approaches, and poses only minimal requirements in that direction. As such, it can be easily integrated into existing, non-adaptive Web-publishing solutions. This chapter presents in detail several aspects of the framework, and provides an overview of its application in the European Commission-funded IST-1999-20656 PALIO project (“Personalised Access to Local Information and Services for Tourists”). Furthermore, it discusses some of the lessons learned from our work on the framework thus far, as well as what we consider the most likely directions of future work in the area.

Abstract An increasing number of families, funders, and community providers seek very brief psychosocial caregiver interventions, yet the evidence for such condensed interventions is not established. Based on the Savvy Caregiver Program, we explored the feasibility, acceptability, and outcome trends for a condensed 3-session version titled, Savvy Express. Based on a single-group, pre- and post-test intervention design, we examined post-intervention and 3-month data on 116 English-speaking racially and ethnically diverse care partners caring family members with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. 41% of the sample was non-Latino white and comprised of Latinas, African Americans and Asian American/API. Most care partners were either adult children or spouses caring for someone with AD or other dementia. Over 80% were college educated. Two of three participants completed all 3 classes. Our findings indicate significant improvements in caregiver levels of depressive symptomatology and anxiety, competence, management of the situation, reduction of expectations, making positive comparisons, and reactivity to the family member’s memory behavior. Upwards of 90% would recommend the program to other caregivers. Savvy Express is a brief caregiver intervention with high acceptability and feasibility. Improvements in care partner psychosocial outcomes signal a promising practice to reduce the burden of caregiving. A major focus of the paper focuses on barriers and facilitators to uptake of the study procedures and intervention with community-based partners. Future work is needed to establish the efficacy of Savvy Express across a longer observation period, and with less educated, low-income participants, and limited English-speaking families.

Engineering design thinking combines concepts from heterogeneous sources like personal experience, colleagues, digital and hardcopy media. Despite this challenge, modes of thinking across levels of abstraction through multi-dimensional (spatial) representations are widely neglected in digital support systems. This paper aims to summarize lessons learned through years of experience with software tools that augment this visio-spatial conceptual thinking. This work cuts across disciplines to provide a needed, coherent starting point for other researchers to examine complex outstanding issues on a class of promising support tools which have yet to gain widespread popularity. Three studies are used to provide specific examples across design phases, from conceptual design to embodiment. Each study also focuses on an exemplar of diagrammatic software: the University of Cambridge Design Rationale editor (DRed), the Institute for Human Machine Cognition’s (IHMC) CmapTools and the Open University’s Compendium hypermedia tool. This synthesis reiterates how hypermedia diagrams provide many unique, valuable functions while indicating important practical boundaries and limitations. Future research proposed includes: a need to build more diagrammatic literacy into engineering practice, the need for more detailed studies with experts in industry and specific directions for refining the hypermedia diagram software interfaces.

The current case outlines practical strategies used by youth leaders to implement a female-only physical activity-based mentoring program. This program was selected as the case for the current paper as it scored the highest on program quality out of 26 different sport and physical activity-based youth programs within a larger project. The two program leaders were interviewed to understand what practical strategies they used to foster a high-quality program within this context. The leaders discussed how they: (a) focused on developing individualized relationships with youth, (b) balanced structure with flexibility to allow for youth voice, (c) intentionally integrated life skills, and (d) combined engaging activities with downtime to differentiate the program from school. This case provides a practical account of how front-line workers in youth mentoring programs, specifically within sport and physical activity contexts, can deliver a quality program. Reflection on areas for future work within the field of sport psychology, including ways to bridge the gap between research and practice and the need to develop communities of practice for youth programmers, are presented.

We investigate the feasibility of using Microsoft HoloLens, a mixed reality device, to visually analyze network capture data and locate anomalies. We developed MINER, a prototype application to visualize details from network packet captures as 3D stereogram charts. MINER employs a novel approach to time-series visualization that extends the time dimension across two axes, thereby taking advantage of the immersive 3D space available via the HoloLens. Users navigate the application through eye gaze and hand gestures to view summary and detailed bar graphs. Callouts display additional detail based on the user’s immediate gaze. In a user study, volunteers used MINER to locate network attacks in a dataset from the 2013 VAST Challenge. We compared the time and effort with a similar test using traditional tools on a desktop computer. Our findings suggest that network anomaly analysis with the HoloLens achieved comparable effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. We describe user metrics and feedback collected from these experiments; lessons learned and suggested future work.

Quite often, organizations are confronted with the burden of managing mobile device assets, requiring control over installed applications, security, usage profiles or customization options. From this perspective, the emergence of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend has aggravated the situation, making it difficult to achieve an adequate balance between corporate regulations, freedom of usage and device heterogeneity. Moreover, device and information protection on mobile ecosystems are quite different from securing other device assets such as laptops or desktops, due to their specific characteristics and limitations—quite often, the resource overhead associated with specific security mechanisms is more important for mobile devices than conventional computing platforms, as the former frequently have comparatively less computing capabilities and more strict power management policies. This paper presents an intrusion and anomaly detection framework specifically designed for managed mobile device ecosystems, that is able to integrate into mobile device and management frameworks for complementing conventional intrusion detection systems. In addition to presenting the reference architecture for the proposed framework, several implementation aspects are also analyzed, based on the lessons learned from developing a proof-of-concept prototype that was used for validation purposes.

A wide variety of challenges have been encountered during the past 10 years of aerospace modal testing. New excitation methods have evolved, including single and multiple input random. Enhancements to traditional single and multiple input sine methods have been developed. Data analysis techniques that allow more consistent modal models to be extracted in less time than previously required have also been developed. New data acquisition hardware allows more rapid acquisition of modal data. As a result of these new excitation methods, data acquisition hardware and analysis tools, more high-quality data can be collected in considerably less time than was possible in the past. Modal surveys with 200 to 400 channels of response are becoming more commonplace. During the development and implementation of these new capabilities, many lessons have been learned about how to manage the increased amount of data collected and how to ensure that the quality remains high.
