Through the National School Food Program (PNAE) and the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) the State seeks to deploy a Public Policy in order to promote family farming providing distribution opportunities for farmers meeting the food needs of public school students. The work aims to analyze the supply of products from family farms in San Gabriel / RS for the PNAE and verify the effectiveness of this policy at the municipal level. The research was exploratory and had a qualitative approach, development of theoretical framework, site visits and construction and application of semistructured interviews with public officials and family farmers. The results revealed that the supply process includes few farmers and does not reach the goal set forth by law.

This study examined student-reported participation in school food and nutrition activities in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), and whether engagement differed by gender and between elementary and secondary school students. A cross-sectional survey of grade 6–8 public school students (n = 937) from 20 elementary and 6 secondary schools assessed student-reported participation in a range of food and nutrition activities. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and multilevel logistic regression to examine associations between participation with gender and school type. Overall, <50% of students reported engaging in most of the food and nutrition activities examined in the 2011–2012 school year, including: food preparation (36%), choosing/tasting healthy foods (27%), learning about Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) (45%), learning about foods grown in BC (35%), gardening (21%), composting (32%), and recycling (51%). Females were more likely to report recycling and learning about CFG and BC-grown foods (P < 0.05). Secondary students were more likely to report activities focused on working with or learning about food/nutrition (P < 0.05). Despite local and provincial efforts to engage students in food and nutrition experiences, participation in most activities remains relatively low, with few students exposed to multiple activities. Continued advocacy is needed from the dietetics community to improve student engagement in food and nutrition activities.

This article analyzes public food procurement policy as one of the characteristics of post-neoliberalism in South America, whereby food produced by family farmers and peasants is purchased by the state and then donated to low-income people and public-school students. Focusing on Brazil, Ecuador, and Paraguay, the study demonstrates how such experiences partly break the control that large agri-food corporations exert in the food systems of these countries. This occurs because public food procurement has created a new market opportunity for family farmers and peasants and has also functioned as a mechanism to combat hunger and promote democratized access to good food. Moreover, such initiatives can be understood as providing a possibility to re-spatialize food by promoting closer contact between food producers and consumers.

This research focuses on the issue of financing family farms in Burkina Faso. To this end, a survey of 275 family farms was carried out in 2020. The research results revealed that the needs of family farms are not completely satisfied. The credits granted mainly concern small amounts. Productive investments which constitute medium and long-term investments capable of inducing significant improvements in agricultural production are almost unsatisfactory. Moreover, analyzes have shown that income determines access to credit. This factor reflects at a certain level the capacity of family farmers to provide the financial guarantees required by microfinance institutions. The current conditions of banks do not favor the development of the agricultural sector and the improvement of the living conditions of the populations in rural areas. It is, therefore, necessary to rethink the financing of agricultural activities and to define a long-lasting and sustainable financing mechanism. Keywords: Credit Accessing, Family Farming, Financing, Burkina Faso.

Despite economic development and social improvements, millions of family farmers in Ethiopia are still struggling with food insecurity. Lack of technology adoption by family farmers is often considered as the root cause for low agricultural productivity and persistence of food insecurity. Based on a study of family farms in southwestern Ethiopia, we show the complex nexus between family farming, food insecurity, and agricultural productivity. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through 300 sample household interviews; expert interviews with elders and village chairmen, agricultural extension agents, farmers’ cooperative heads, as well as experts in NGOs, research institutes, and state agencies; and on-farm observations with in-depth interviews and discussions with individual farmers. Our findings illustrate that everyday experiences, culture, knowledge, and priorities of farmers coupled with ecological and political factors play crucial roles—and need more consideration than the classic ‘lack of technology’ theorem.

Family farming is quite different between Brazilian regions, where one of the main factors of this distinction is the implementation of agricultural modernization that initially benefited the regions South and Southeast, making these regions more mechanized and with a higher level of human capital. Given this fact, this article aims to measure the productive differences of family farmers between Brazilian regions using data from the 2017 Agricultural Census and applying a spatial stochastic frontier at municipal level. The results have shown that there is a high heterogeneity between Brazilian regions, where although all areas have shown a decreasing return of production scale, these returns were greater for the regions Midwest, Southeast, and South. Besides, technology and labor have a lesser effect on the gross income of farmers in the Northeast. The results also show that spillovers were different between regions, both for the factors of production and for the determinants of inefficiency. Furthermore, the heterogeneity can be confirmed by the efficiency scores, which were higher in the regions South, Midwest, and Mid-South regions of the Southeast. The results also suggest that, according to the profile of each region, it is necessary to implement more efficient policies that aim to improve the effectiveness of existing policies and mitigate the differences between them, especially in the North and Northeast of Brazil.

This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of family agriculturists who sell their products in the  Covered  Fair of  Nova Xavantina - MT, from the different strategies used by them, their problems and prospects in relation to income generation and maintenance of families . We surveyed 14 familiar producers and 14 consumers. These numbers have not been defined by statistical criteria, which is characterized by a search combining a quantitative and qualitative approach. The instruments used for data collection consisted of questionnaires, direct observation  and interviews. By this research it could  be seen that the Covered Fair  is an important space of conviviality, trade and consumption, however, this place is still little appreciated by the population and producers. The lack of infrastructure and the stiffness of supervision does not bring attractive to many farmers in the municipality and this is directly reflected in the marketing and purchase of products from family farms, important sector in terms of economic and social development. Thus, public policies for production, consumption and trade are essential for greater inclusion of family farmers in the municipality of Nova Xavantina and region.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze suggestions that facilitate the use of organic foods produced by family farms made by the social actors responsible for Santa Catarina's school meals. METHODS: This qualitative and exploratory study used an electronic questionnaire for surveying 293 municipalities in the state of Santa Catarina in 2010 and identified the percentage of organic school foods purchased from family farms. The social actors from 52 municipalities who were responsible for organic food acquisition were interviewed in person. Their suggestions were categorized and analyzed by content analysis. RESULTS: A total of 446 social actors made 684 suggestions categorized into four themes: Awareness strategies for the use of organic foods (n=286) were proposed by principals and dieticians, who emphasized the need of educating social actors and community and raising community awareness; Better Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar management (n=148) was suggested by principals and family farmers, who wanted less bureaucracy and outsourcing, fewer taxes, and more management involvement; Better coordination between the demand and supply of organic foods (n=130) was suggested by principals, family farmers, and cooks because of logistic and supply problems; and Better management of school food production (n=120) was suggested by principals and cooks, who reported problems with the supply of specific foods, low organic food diversity, and lack of certification. CONCLUSION: For the social actors, the use of organic foods in the schools of Santa Catarina requires the education of those involved (technical support, educational strategies, and community awareness), government support, coordination between demand and supply, and better management of organic food production.

This book, consisting of nine chapters, is the result of multiple theoretical and empirical research carried out by students in the post-graduate program in education (PPGE) at Universidade Nove de Julho (UNINOVE). The object of the research was to carry out a study on the new models of higher education, implemented in Brazil between 2005 and 2013. The studies carried out focus, above all, on institutional principles, student access policies, the internationalization process, quota policies, and mechanisms for inclusion in higher education for public school students. These were studies that used, as a theoretical basis, epistemological models of a counter-hegemonic character and, from a methodological point of view, an essentially qualitative approach. The studies showed, generically, the possibility of building other models of higher education capable of overcoming the elitism, characteristic of traditional universities. The inclusion of students from public school reveals that it is possible to make higher education a right for everyone, democratizing it, in the sense of establishing social and cognitive justice. Keywords: higher education; new models; empirical research; Brazil; social and cognitive justice.
