The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the survival rate by comparing Class II restoration using flowable resin composite with stainless steel crown in primary molars.Electronic medical records and radiographs of 1,504 primary molars with proximal caries of 590 patients from June 2015 to August 2019 were analyzed. With the collected data, survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method.The 1-year survival rate of flowable resin composite in the primary molar was 98.5%, 3-year survival rate was 87.7%, and mean survival time was 39 months. There was no statistically significant difference between flowable resin composite and stainless steel crown (<i>p</i> = 0.896).Within the limits of this study, Class II restoration using flowable resin composite can be considered a promising option for the treatment of proximal caries in primary molars.

Aim. This study aimed to retrospectively compare the survival outcomes over two years between teeth with proximal dental caries that were restored with stainless-steel crowns to those that were pulpotomized and then restored with a stainless-steel crown in patients who were rehabilitated under general anesthesia. Participants and Methods. The records of 131 patients aged between two to six years who had stainless-steel crowns placed under general anesthesia and had two-year follow-up were screened. 340 teeth with moderate proximal caries on the radiograph (D2) were included in the study. Of these, 164 teeth were treated with a pulpotomy and stainless-steel crown, while 176 teeth were crowned without a pulpotomy. The type of each tooth was compared using the Chi-squared test and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, and curves were plotted based on the two-year outcomes. Results. Treatment: the sample comprised 59 males (mean age 4.73 years, SD ± 1.4 years) and 72 females (mean age 5.2 years, SD ± 2.0 years). The Kaplan–Meier regression model showed no significant difference in survival outcomes between teeth that had been pulpotomized and those that had not ( p  = 0.283). Conclusion. Within the limitations of the current study, we can conclude that performing a pulpotomy does not influence the survival outcome of mild/moderate proximal caries restored with stainless-steel crowns under general anesthesia.

Abstract Objective: To compare the clinical performance of a self-etching primer (SEP) with a conventional two-step etch and primer method (CM). Materials and Methods: Study subjects were 39 patients with a mean age of 15 years 7 months. Six hundred and eighty-eight brackets were bonded by one operator with a split-mouth design, using Transbond Plus Self-Etching Primer or a conventional two-step etch and primer (Transbond XT). The survival rate of the brackets was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier analysis. Bracket survival distributions with respect to bonding procedure, dental arch, type of tooth (incisor, canine, and premolar) and patients' gender were compared using the log-rank test. Bond failure interface was determined using the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). Results: The bond failure rates of SEP and CM were 4.7% and 1.7%, respectively. A significant difference was found between the bonding procedures using the log-rank test (P &lt; .05). Furthermore, canine and premolar teeth displayed a lower survival rate than incisor teeth (P &lt; .05). Survival rates did not show significant differences between the upper and lower dental arches and patients' gender (P &gt; .05). No significant difference was observed for ARI scores (P &gt; .05). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the SEP (Transbond Plus) can be effectively used to bond orthodontic brackets.

Less invasive caries management techniques for treating cavitated carious primary teeth, which involve the concept of caries control by managing the activity of the biofilm, are becoming common. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy (minor/major failures) and survival rates (successful cases without any failures) of 3 carious lesion treatment approaches, the Hall Technique (HT), non-restorative caries treatment (NRCT), and conventional restorations (CR), for the management of occlusoproximal caries lesions (ICDAS 3-5) in primary molars. Results at 2.5 years are presented. A total of 169 children (3- to 8-year-olds) were enrolled in this secondary care-based, 3-arm parallel-group, randomised controlled trial. Participants were allocated to: HT (n = 52; sealing caries with stainless-steel crowns without caries removal), NRCT (n = 52; opening up the cavity and applying fluoride varnish), CR (n = 65; control arm, complete caries removal and compomer restoration). Statistical analyses were: non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney U test and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. One hundred and forty-two participants (84%; HT = 40/52; NRCT = 44/52; CR = 58/65) had follow-up data of 1-33 months (mean = 26). Overall, 25 (HT = 2, NRCT = 9, CR = 14) of 142 participants (17.6%) presented with at least 1 minor failure (reversible pulpitis, caries progression, or secondary caries; p = 0.013, CI = 0.012-0.018; Mann-Whitney U test). Ten (HT = 1, NRCT = 4, CR = 5) of 142 participants (7.04%) experienced at least 1 major failure (irreversible pulpitis, abscess, unrestorable tooth; p = 0.043, CI = 0.034-0.045). Independent comparisons between 2 samples found that NRCT-CR had no statistically significant difference in failures (p > 0.05), but for CR-HT (p = 0.037, CI = 0.030-0.040) and for NRCT-HT (p = 0.011, CI = 0.010-0.016; Kruskal-Wallis test) significant differences were observed. Cumulative survival rates were HT = 92.5%, NRCT = 70.5%, and CR = 67.2% (p = 0.012). NRCT and CR outcomes were comparable. HT performed better than NRCT and CR for all outcomes. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical performance of indirect resin composite onlays (IRC onlay) compared to stainless steel crowns (SSCs), as an esthetic alternative for rehabilitation of extensively carious primary molars. Study design: Fifty pediatric patients each received either IRC onlay or SSC randomly on extensively carious endodontically treated primary molars. All the restorations were evaluated at baseline and then every 6 months till 36 months using ‘modified FDI criteria’ for retention, marginal integrity, occlusion, proximal contact, secondary caries and gingival health. The dental chair side treatment time and post-operative acceptability were also evaluated for both the groups. Results: The cumulative survival rate of IRC onlays was 82.9% compared to 90.7% for SSCs over a time period of 36 months. The difference between the two study groups at various time intervals in terms of retention, marginal integrity, secondary caries, proximal contact, occlusion and gingival health was not statistically significant (p&gt;0.05). The IRC onlays required significantly less mean chair side treatment time and were preferred the most by parents and children as per VAS scores compared to SSCs. Conclusion: IRC onlays are an acceptable esthetic alternative to SSCs and may be considered for use in aesthetically conscious children/parents as per their preference.

Little is known about breast cancer in Vietnamese women. Previous studies have reported the frequencies of prognostic factors of breast cancer in this population. The aim of this study was to examine the prognostic factors associated with the survival rates of patients with breast cancer treated at the National Cancer Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam. We recruited 248 women with operable breast cancer treated with surgery and adjuvant therapy. Tumor tissue samples were stained by many immunohistochemical approaches and analyzed for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2 gene amplification status. A Cox model was used to determine the relationship between survival and the prognostic factors. The disease-free survival rate, overall survival rate, and cancer-specific survival rate were 75.8%, 80.6%, and 86.4%, respectively, at 5 years and 62.3%, 68.1%, and 78.9%, respectively, at 10 years. The lung was the most common metastatic site. Women with factors associated with a poor prognosis (eg, advanced clinical stage, high tumor grade, progesterone receptor [PR] negativity, HER2 amplification) had significantly lower survival rates. Patients with PR-negative breast cancer had significantly worse survival rates compared to those who were PR positive, according to multivariate analysis (hazard ratio = 1.77, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-3.11, P = .045); however, there was only a statistically significant difference in postmenopausal patients. The PR was a prognostic factor in postmenopausal women with breast cancer, but not in premenopausal women.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal microleakage in Class II with different materials in resin composite restorations cured by using "soft start" and standard polymerization techniques. Two adhesive Class II cavities were prepared in 50 human teeth with enamel in-between. Samples were divided into 5 groups and filled with composite resins, compatible flow resin composites and bonding systems. The ocluso-mesial restorations were cured with standard curing technique, and the ocluso-distal restorations were cured with "soft start" curing technique. After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in silver nitrate solution and sectioned for leakage evaluation. The results pointed out, after "soft start" and standard curing techniques, that the best marginal behavior in Class II restorations was obtained with Tetric Ceram / Tetric Flow composite resins, then with Filtek Z 250 / Filtek Flow, followed by Admira Admira Flow and Point / Revolution composite materials. The deepest dye penetration was found in cavities with Diamond Lite / Diamond Link composite restorations. No statistically significant difference was found in the tested composite resin restorations, whether treated with "soft start" polymerization or with standard polymerization technique, in regard to marginal micro leakage.

Abstract Background : To investigate whether there is a distinct difference in prognosis between hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach ( HAS) and non-hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach (non-HAS) and whether HAS can benefit from radical surgery. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 722 patients with non-HAS and 75 patients with HAS who underwent radical gastrectomy between 3 November 2009 and 17 December 2018. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used to eliminate the bias among the patients in our study. The relationships between gastric cancer type and overall survival (OS) were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression. Results : Our data demonstrate that there was no statistically significant difference in the OS between HAS and non-HAS {K-M, P=log rank (Mantel-Cox), (before PSM P=0.397); (1:1 PSM P=0.345); (1:2 PSM P=0.195)}. Moreover, there were no significant differences in the 1-, 2-, or 3-year survival rates between patients with non-HAS and patients with HAS (before propensity matching, after 1:1 propensity matching, and after 1:2 propensity matching). Conclusion : HAS was generally considered to be an aggressive gastric neoplasm, but its prognosis may not be as unsatisfactory as previously believed.

Several studies have shown that both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus are risk factors for mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study was undertaken to investigate influence of CKD on the prognostic significance of diabetes in patients with AMI. Between January 1996 and December 2005, 888 patients with AMI underwent coronary angiography within 24 hours after the onset of chest pain. CKD was difined estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of less than 60.0 ml/minute/1.73 m 2 of body-surface area (stage3–5). Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare 5-year survival of diabetic and non-diabetic patients, in the presence (n=337) or absence (n=551). Kaplan-Meier curves for 5-year survival rate are shown in Figure . In the absence of CKD, there was no significant difference in 5-year survival rate between patients with diabetes and those without (93 % v.s. 94 %, p=0.82). In patients with CKD, however, diabetes was associated with lower 5-year survival rate (65 % v.s. 87 %, p<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that diabetes was an independent predictor for 5-year survival in patients with CKD (OR 3.2, 95%CI 1.8–5.8, p=0.0002), but not in patients without CKD (OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.4–2.5, p=0.82). Diabetes mellitus was an independent predictor for death after AMI in patients with CKD. Aggressive treatment after AMI should be advocated in diabetic patients with CKD.

BACKGROUND: Published reports indicate that survival rates of patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome have not improved dramatically since the first report of the condition in 1967. However, changes in ventilator strategies and improved critical care management may result in better survival rates in patients with well-defined, severe adult respiratory distress syndrome. OBJECTIVES: To report the outcomes of patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome treated in a community hospital and compare these findings with those in previously published reports. METHODS: A retrospective study design was used. All patients diagnosed with adult respiratory distress syndrome (N = 47) over a 2-year period were studied. RESULTS: For the study patients, the survival rate was 64%; 29% died from respiratory failure alone. Analysis demonstrated that advanced age was not associated with mortality. Pressure-control ventilation was used for 31 patients and there was no significant difference in the presence of barotrauma in the pressure-control mode vs volume ventilation. CONCLUSION: This survival rate exceeds most recently reported rates and thus supports the idea that improvement in treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome is occurring.
