In this contribution we address the issue of family and technoscience. We define techno-science as knowledge applied to all areas of reality. We approach on the topic of the nuclear family and the couple and then we expose our previous contributions on family and human biotechnology and we update and expand our knowledge on it. We focus on the impact that the Covid-19 syndemic is having on family life and then we explain the impact that the latest advances in Genetic Engineering, especially Gene Editing (CRISPR) are taking into account. We expose the disputes that are generating both the cloning and the recent modification of embryos and we finally highlight the need to continue researching to achieve a harmonious and favourable relationship with techno-science. En esta contribución abordamos el tema de la familia y la tecnociencia. Definimos la tecnociencia como un saber aplicado a todos los ámbitos de la realidad. Nos aproximamos a la cuestión de la familia nuclear y la pareja y exponemos nuestras contribuciones anteriores en torno a la biotecnología humana y la familia que actualizamos y ampliamos. Nos centramos en el impacto que la sindemia de la Covid-19 está teniendo en la vida familiar y seguidamente explicamos la repercusión de los recientes avances de la Ingeniería genética especialmente de la Edición de Genes (CRISPR). Exponemos las disputas que están generando tanto la clonación como la reciente modificación de embriones y finalmente resaltamos la necesidad de seguir investigando para lograr una relación armónica y favorable con la tecnociencia.

BACKGROUND: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have affected various dimensions of modern societies, modifying even economic, politic, social and cultural structures. Therefore, it cannot be ignored the positive impacts according to social knowledge appropriation, but even in proper dimensions of social and family relationship, where ICTs usage has been compared with narcotic additions.OBJECTIVE: Explore how the use of ICTs have impacted the family interaction in Medellin city, 2016.METHODOLOGY: The study was carried out through an exploratory qualitative and a convenience sampling research. A self-administered instrument supported by a Likert scale was used, applied to a group of residents of Medellin city.RESULTS: It is observed that although ICTs have enabled a large flow of information that reinforces the nuclear family, particularly children, also have caused a detriment in communication processes and family life, generating sensations that lead to family members perceive a “distant relationship”, which goes against the current family concept.CONCLUSION: It is pertinent to encourage further researches to evaluate the impact of ICTs on the relationship processes from a qualitative vision and through longitudinal studies, and explore how new technologies have redefined the concepts of family life in modern societies.

In recent years, the CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing techniques have been well developed and applied widely in several aspects of research in the biological sciences, in many species, including humans, animals, plants, and even in viruses. Modification of the viral genome is crucial for revealing gene function, virus pathogenesis, gene therapy, genetic engineering, and vaccine development. Herein, we have provided a brief review of the different technologies for the modification of the viral genomes. Particularly, we have focused on the recently developed CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing system, detailing its origin, functional principles, and touching on its latest achievements in virology research and applications in vaccine development, especially in large DNA viruses of humans and animals. Future prospects of CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing technology in virology research, including the potential shortcomings, are also discussed.

AbstractThe discussion about the impact of agricultural biotechnology on Africa is deeply divided and contains widely diverging claims about the impact of biotechnology on African farmers. Building upon literature on the ‘good farmer’ that highlights that farmers identities are an important factor in explaining the success or failure of agricultural change, we argue that the identity of the farmer is an undervalued yet crucial aspect for understanding the debate about the impact of agricultural biotechnology on African farmers. In this article we therefore investigate what farmers’ identities are implicated in the arguments about the impact of biotechnology on African farmers. We aim to identify the main fault lines in different accounts of the African biotechnology farmer by analysing the identities ascribed to them in two prominent cases of controversy: the debates at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and the discussion about the impact of biotechnology on smallholder farmers in the Makhathini flats in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Our findings demonstrate that arguments about biotechnology are informed by diverging conceptions of who the African farmer is, what is important for the African farmer, and what role the African farmer has in relation to agricultural biotechnology. These findings remain relevant for current discussions on gene editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas. Openly discussing these different views on the identity of smallholder farmers is crucial for moving forward in the biotechnology controversy and can inform future attempts to elicit the farmer’s voice.

The functional value experience of family tourism has often been paid attention both by tourists themselves and the tourism industry, but the individual value experience of parents in family tourism has been neglected. Family tourism shifts the scenario of interpersonal interaction between families from home, the conventional environment, to a non-conventional one. This change in the interactive situation will inevitably bring about changes in interpersonal interaction behavior and individual perception, especially to tourists who take on the role of parents in a nuclear family. This study enriches the examination of the family tourism experience by exploring the interpersonal interaction, existential authenticity travel experiences, and quality of tourist experience perceived by parents in family tourism. The main findings are: 1) In the non-conventional environment of tourism, effective interaction between tourists and their families helps to improve tourists’ emotional experience and satisfaction; 2) Three aspects of existential authenticity are the internal causes of the impact of interpersonal interaction on emotional experience and satisfaction; 3) Differences in parental roles make important discrepancies between men and women’s perception of family tourism experiences. This study provides insights to understanding the family tourism market and brings valuable findings to the area of family tourism marketing and management.

AbstractThe clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) gene editing technology, as a revolutionary breakthrough in genetic engineering, offers a promising platform to improve the treatment of various genetic and infectious diseases because of its simple design and powerful ability to edit different loci simultaneously. However, failure to conduct precise gene editing in specific tissues or cells within a certain time may result in undesirable consequences, such as serious off-target effects, representing a critical challenge for the clinical translation of the technology. Recently, some emerging strategies using genetic regulation, chemical and physical strategies to regulate the activity of CRISPR/Cas9 have shown promising results in the improvement of spatiotemporal controllability. Herein, in this review, we first summarize the latest progress of these advanced strategies involving cell-specific promoters, small-molecule activation and inhibition, bioresponsive delivery carriers, and optical/thermal/ultrasonic/magnetic activation. Next, we highlight the advantages and disadvantages of various strategies and discuss their obstacles and limitations in clinical translation. Finally, we propose viewpoints on directions that can be explored to further improve the spatiotemporal operability of CRISPR/Cas9.

Identifying the role orientation of recently divorced women holds promise for further understanding the divorce process and the family life cycle of nonnuclear families. The authors describe how 30 female heads of family perceived their adaptation to divorce and to the reconstruction and development of their family units. Results of this exploratory study further suggest that the meaning and value a divorced woman attaches to the mothering component of her role as well as the comfort she feels in accepting a work identity affect the ways in which she adapts to being a single parent. The consequences of this adaptation, in turn, alter the content of the family life cycle.
