Objetivo: Analizar los niveles preliminares de estrés, Burnout y depresión entre los auxiliares y técnicos de enfermería que trabajan en las unidades de cuidados intensivos de algunos servicios hospitalarios privados.Método: Estudio de enfoque cuantitativo-analítico y transversal, en 3 servicios hospitalarios privados y en 4 unidades de terapia intensiva. El instrumento de recolección de datos se compuso de 5 cuestionarios validados: perfil socioeconómico y demográfico, sintomatología del estrés en Bacarro, Escala de Estrés en el Trabajo, Cuestionario de JBeili, versión brasileña inspirada en el Maslach Burnout Inventory (versión HSS - Human Services Survey) el Inventario de Depresión de Beck, todos los datos fueron tratados a través de la estadística analítica.Resultados: Fueron abordados 72 auxiliares y técnicos de enfermería, donde la mayoría era del sexo femenino (52,8%), técnicos en enfermería (95,8%), entre 31 a 35 años (27,8%), casados (54,2%) y con 2 o más vínculos de trabajo (62,5%). En la fase inicial del síndrome de Burnout (68,1%) y con cuadro disfórico-depresivo (45,4%) en Bacarro, con estrés leve (66,7%) en la escala de estrés en el trabajo, en la fase inicial del síndrome de Burnout (68,1%) y con cuadro disfórico-depresivo (45,8%).Conclusión: Las unidades de cuidados intensivos son ambientes insalubres, potencialmente tensiogénicos y con elevada tasa de absentismo. Los participantes del estudio mantienen doble jornada de trabajo, en su mayoría mujeres y con hijos, presentando escores preocupantes de estrés, Burnout y depresión. The data collection instrument consisted of five validated questionnaires: socioeconomic and demographic profile, stress symptomatology in Bacarro, Work Stress Scale, JBeili Questionnaire, Brazilian version inspired by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (HSS - Human Services Survey) and the Beck Depression Inventory, all data were treated using analytical statistics.Results: The study included 72 nursing assistants and technicians, the majority was female (52.8%), nursing technician (95.8%), aged 31-35 years old (27.8%), married (54,2%) and with two or more employments (62.5%). They were classified with moderate stress (70.8%) in Bacarro, with mild stress (66.7%) on the work stress scale, in initial phase of Burnout syndrome (68.1%) and with dysphoric-depressive symptoms (45,8%).Conclusion: Intensive care units are potentially tensiogenic unhealthy environments and with high absenteeism rates. The study participants keep double working hours, mostly women and with children, presenting high scores of stress, Burnout and depression. Os participantes do estudo mantêm dupla jornada de trabalho, em sua maioria mulheres e com filhos, apresentando escores elevados de estresse, Burnout e depressão.

Nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICU) may be exposed to considerable stress of work. High levels of stress in ICU nurses affect the quality of nursing and the quality of life at work. Determination of occupational stress levels, burnout syndrome and overall job satisfaction among ICU nurses. The research was conducted in Intensive Care Unit of Emergency Clinical County Hospital of Oradea, Romania. Data were collected from the questionnaires, 29 nurses (of the 35) were selected for this study. Professional stress factors have been assessed through Expanded Nurses Stress Scale (ENSS), burnout syndrome through Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), while overall job satisfaction was measured by a 7-step Likert scale. The highest levels of stress were associated with workload and conflicts with other health professionals, professional relationship between nurses have been described as the least stressful. About burnout levels: a high score for emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and a low score for professional achievements. Professional satisfaction has reached an average level. The fidelity of the scales was verified by the Cronbach’s alfa coefficient: Expanded Nurses Stress Scale (ENSS) (0.98) and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) (0.73).

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever os níveis de estresse entre os profissionais de Enfermagem de nível médio nas unidades de terapia intensiva adulto de alguns serviços hospitalares privados. Método: trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, analítico e transversal, em três serviços hospitalares privados. Aplicaram-se dois questionários, analisando-os dados por meio da estatística analítica. Apresentam-se os resultados em forma de tabelas. Resultados: revela-se que, dos 72 participantes, a maioria (95%) era composta de técnicos de Enfermagem, do gênero feminino (52,8%), de adultos jovens (27,8%) e casada (54,2%). Verificou-se, além do escore de estresse moderado (70,8%), que é mais provável que um profissional que apresente essa sintomatologia possa desencadear um alto nível de estresse laboral. Conclusão: averiguaram-se uma taxa significativa de estresse e de absenteísmo, que o ambiente laboral exerce situações tensiogênicas frequentes e que, pela má remuneração salarial, esses profissionais assumem múltiplas jornadas de trabalho que não cessam nos seus domicílios. Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental stress caused by chronic workplace pressure. Nurses are often confronted with stress-laden situations related to varied functions and extent of responsibilities causing the burnout syndrome. This study aims to describe the burnout level of inpatient nurses working in the (inpatient) units of a private hospital in West Java. This is a descriptive quantitative study conducted among all the 54 nurses in this hospital’s inpatient units. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBIHSS), a tool that measures three dimensions of the burnout syndrome: personal accomplishments, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, was used. Data collected were analysed with the univariate analysis that described the respondents’ characteristics and their responses on the MBI-HSS. Results showed that majority of the respondents are females (94.4%); more than half (61.1%) have a Bachelor of Nursing degree; 74.1% are in the 20-30 years age group; and 51.9% had more than one year of work experience. Moreover, the respondents rated depersonalization characterized by feelings of unreality and strangeness about one's own behaviour as the dimension that highly contributed to burnout (98%). Emotional exhaustion, the feelings of being emotionally overextended and exhausted by one's work was rated low (40.7%). Moreover, personal achievement that measures feelings of competence and successful achievement in one's work had a high 70.4%. Resumo: Estudo descritivo-exploratório, transversal, com amostra de 33 enfermeiros, objetivou verificar a ocorrência da síndrome de burnout em enfermeirosatuantes em unidade de terapia intensiva. Foram aplicados questionários dos dados sociodemográficos e o Maslach Burnout Inventory. Dosparticipantes, 43% apresentaram baixo nível de exaustão emocional, 52% baixo nível de despersonalização, 49% demonstraram satisfação moderadano trabalho e em 6% foi diagnosticado o burnout. Abstract Aim. The aim of the study is to evaluate a relationship between demographic and work-related factors and a work stress coping style as well as a relationship between a work stress coping style and symptoms of occupational syndrome. Material and methods. Material was collected from 50 nurses employed in intensive care units of clinical hospitals of the Medical University of Lodz. The study was conducted as a diagnostic survey using the following survey techniques: author’s questionnaire and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). Results. The study group demonstrated the highest mean value for the task-oriented coping style and the lowest mean value – for the avoidance-oriented coping style. Age, education level and subjective determination of the degree of work-related stress affect the value of the task-oriented coping style. The emotion-oriented stress style is accompanied by heart palpitations and avoidance of physical activity. The value of the avoidance-oriented coping sub-style, i.e. distraction, depends on atmosphere at workplace, heart palpitations and sleep problems. The value of the avoidance-oriented coping sub style, i.e. social diversion, is contributed by marital status, fertility and work organization. Conclusions. Nurses working in intensive care units prefer the task-oriented coping style. Work stress coping style is related to demographic factors and perception of work environment. An unadaptive style of coping with work-related stress is accompanied by symptoms of somatic occupational burnout syndrome.

Objetivo: Avaliar o nível da Síndrome de burnout nos profissionais de Enfermagem na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. Metodologia: Estudo quantitativo e transversal, realizado com 47 profissionais de Enfermagem que trabalham na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital publico de alta complexidade, no período de Abril a Outubro de 2012. Utilizou-se um questionário estruturado autoaplicável acrescido do Maslach Burnout Inventory, analizou-se por regressão logística pelo teste de Wald. Resultado: 74,5% dos profissionais obtiveram um alto nível para exaustão, 93,7% baixo nível para realização profissional e 93,7% alto nível para despersonalização. Considerações finais: O ambiente intensivista é propício para o desenvolvimento da Síndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To identify associations between high-stress and burnout syndrome in multidisciplinary residents from a federal university in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. METHOD: This is an analytical, cross-sectional and quantitative study. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the Work Stress Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were applied to 37 residents between April and June 2011. P-values<0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: We verified that 48.65% of the residents experienced high-stress. When associating the MBI-HSS subscales, we verified that 27% of the residents showed some indication of burnout syndrome. There was a statistically significant correlation (p=0.00, r=0.68) between a high-stress and burnout. CONCLUSIONS: High-stress was confirmed as being a predictor of burnout syndrome among multidisciplinary residents. Therefore, we propose that intervention studies be conducted in order to change such contexts.

The mental health issue during the COVID-19 pandemic must consider different populations: doctors / health professionals; general population and patients with mental disorders. When analyzing the stress-generating environment, such as intensive care units and emergencies, one must keep in mind the great demand for work and overload of professionals who are in this current pandemic scenario. Thus, this study aims to review the literature on the problems arising from the Burnout Syndrome in intensive care physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study constitutes a descriptive bibliographic review on information about the main mental health complications of intensive care physicians directly involved in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. The searches were performed in bibliographic databases Medline, Embase, Pubmed and Central, after the re-reading of each article, the data of interest were extracted and analyzed in a descriptive way for the composition of this work. Among the factors that modify the working environment of intensive care physicians working in the front line to combat COVID-19, are: limited hospital resources, threat of exposure to the virus as an additional occupational risk, longer shifts, disturbed sleep patterns, subsequent high dilemmas regarding duties with the patient versus fear of exposure to family members, increased workload, increased physical and mental fatigue, stress, anxiety and physical exhaustion. That said, measures must be taken to support intensive care groups in this phase of global public health. The measures include psychological counseling, organization of the workday, provision of personal protective equipment and training on safety measures. The present review showed evidence of how accentuated the cases of burnout and other emotional manifestations related to work stress worsened with the pandemic of COVID-19. Such emotional conditions have a negative impact on the care of patients undergoing intensive care units, as work stress causes illness, low motivation, unproductiveness and less self-confidence in their own work skills.

In early March 2020, Italy became the epicenter of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Europe. A different organization of hospital units was required to take care of patients affected by acute respiratory failure caused by COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout in two sub-intensive care units (SICUs) of the COVID-19 hub center of the Lombardia region in Milan (Italy). All nurses and healthcare assistants working in the SICUs during June 2020 were included in the study. Burnout was assessed via the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire. One hundred and five (84%) SICU staff participated in the study. The prevalence of high burnout for nurses and healthcare assistants was 61.9% for emotional exhaustion, 47.6% for depersonalization and 34.3% for personal accomplishment. Depersonalization was significantly more frequent in younger nurses (p = 0.009). Nurses were 4.5 times more likely to have burnout than healthcare assistants. Burnout was a common condition among healthcare workers operating in SICUs during the pandemic. Urgent actions are needed, especially for nurses, as well as preventive strategies for future pandemic scenarios.
