Studies have shown that multisensorial interactions are an important medium for achieving love and intimacy. Nevertheless, the question remains: How do people constitute their “love at a distance” when they can only interact with each other over a video call, in which certain sensorial resources (e.g., touch, smell, and taste) are not available? Drawing from two years of video-based fieldwork involving recordings of habitual calls among the members of migrant families, I consider the application of Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (EMCA)-informed video analysis to investigating intimate relationships constructed through remote means. I present an innovative method of video recording that allows me to analyze the interactional resources toward which participants orient themselves in their calls. I illustrate this approach with data analysis to demonstrate the relevance of video to examining intimacy at a distance. This article proposes that a distinct contribution of video-based research to the discipline lies in its ability to capture how people use their embodied and sensorial interactions to form intimacy across distances.

Teachers often code-switch in the EFL classroom, but the question of whether or not they are aware of their code-switching has not been satisfactorily answered. This article presents the study on teachers’ understandings and beliefs about their code-switching practices in EFL classrooms as well as effective language teaching and learning. The participants of this study came from four junior high schools in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia: five teachers with their respective classes. This research used the conversation analysis and stimulated recall interviews to analyze the data which came from the video recording of classroom observations and the audio recording of stimulated recall interviews with teachers. The results revealed the pedagogical functions and affective functions of teacher’s code-switching. The data also showed that the use of stimulated recall interviews helped teachers to be consciously aware of their code-switching as well as of their other pedagogical practices in the language classroom. Therefore, stimulated recall interviews can be a useful tool for teacher self-reflection that they were not aware of their code switch. This awareness could be incorporated into language teacher professional development and in-service teacher professional learning.

Kata Kunci: pemarkah wacana, fungsi tekstual dan interpersonal FUNCTIONS OF DISCOURSE MARKERS: A CASE STUDY OF A SPEAKING CLASS AT TERTIARY EDUCATIONAbstractThis study aimed to investigate functions of and students’ familiarity with discourse markers. This was a qualitative study. The data were collected through video-recording and transcription. The data analysis used Brinton’s and Alami’s theories. The study revealed all textual functions, i.e.: sequence, repair, opening and closing frame markers, filler, information indicator, topic switcher, and turn taker. The interpersonal function was almost never found because the speaker only focused on delivering materials. Further, it was noted that the speaker had limited knowledge of discourse markers so that the same discourse markers were often used. The study thus suggested the lecturer should take these into account in the assessment. Keywords: discourse markers, textual and interpersonal functions

Abstract Nowadays, in many Italian and European universities, teachers’ training includes one or more examinations related to new didactic methodologies and practices. The topic of this paper is how it is possible to realize a new video analysis laboratory as a didactic and research “tool” for teachers’ training at the University of Salerno that can support teaching–learning process for new teachers. The main idea of this project is to design and implement a mobile video analysis laboratory for video recording real or simulated didactic activities. In addition, the concept that drives this research is to develop a “plug-and-play” laboratory that can be installed everywhere in less than 15 minutes by everybody. This laboratory is already designed and tested and is composed of five cameras, a control room software and an open source video analysis software.

This paper deals with how scientific contents related to the water cycle are expressed (6th grade) as well as the role that the teacher´s questions play during an inquiry-based lesson. The research questions of the study were: What scientific concepts are constructed by students and teacher? What kind of questions uses the pre-service teacher in order to guide the thought of students? The employed methodology is based on video-analysis, being the data source a 1 hour video recording. Difficulties are perceived when students try to explain the scientific concepts (evaporation and condensation) in the context of the water cycle. The video allowed us to observe the difficulty involved in making knowledge move forward as the session progresses.

Walking speed is one of the factors in understanding the pedestrian walking behaviours. Every pedestrian has different level of walking speed that are regulated by some factors such as gender and age. This study was conducted at a bus terminal area with two objectives in which the first one was to determine the average walking speed of pedestrian by considering the factors of age, gender, people with and without carrying baggage; and the second one was to make a comparison of the average walking speed that considered age as the factor of comparison between pedestrian at the bus terminal area and crosswalk. Demographic factor of pedestrian walking speed in this study are gender and age consist of male, female, and 7 groups of age categories that are children, adult men and women, senior adult men and women, over 70 and disabled person. Data of experiment was obtained by making a video recording of the movement of people that were walking and roaming around at the main lobby for 45 minutes by using a camcorder. Hence, data analysis was done by using software named Human Behaviour Simulator (HBS) for analysing the data extracted from the video. The result of this study was male pedestrian walked faster than female with the average of walking speed 1.13m/s and 1.07m/s respectively. Averagely, pedestrian that walked without carrying baggage had higher walking speed compared to pedestrian that were carrying baggage with the speed of 1.02m/s and 0.70m/s respectively. Male pedestrian walks faster than female because they have higher level of stamina and they are mostly taller than female pedestrian. Furthermore, pedestrian with baggage walks slower because baggage will cause distractions such as pedestrian will have more weight to carry and people tend to walk slower.

This paper examines how young children mobilize interactional resources to position peers as neither fully included nor fully excluded in a preschool classroom. A single case of a video recording of three preschool-aged girls was analysed using conversation analysis. Two girls restricted access to a third girl and positioned her on the periphery in peer activity. The third girl’s entry into the activity was restricted through the other two’s claims of object ownership, limited physical access to objects, multi-modal practices that diverted attention away from the coveted objects, and assessments and sanctions around engagement with an object. The recurrent attempts to keep out the third girl were undertaken through partitioning. Findings highlight how children protect dyadic relationships.
