In this study electroless Ni-P coatings were deposited on W302 steel substrates. The effects of bath pH and heat treatment at 400?C were investigated on the surface morphology, phase structure, phosphorus content, thickness and microhardness of the coatings. It was observed that both the phosphorus content and coating thickness are dependent on the bath pH. In an acidic/neutral bath, low and medium phosphorus coatings with thickness of 13.9-19.8 ?m were synthesized, while in an alkaline bath, high phosphorus, 4.8-5.8 ?m-thick coatings were formed. Coatings containing medium or high P seemed to be amorphous, while low P coatings had microcrystalline structures. Hardness was also dependent on the composition of the coating. After heat treatment, the structure of the coatings transformed into crystalline Ni with the precipitation of Ni3P phases, which resulted further increases in hardness.

This research deals with the interest in production of Cu-Sn-Zn ternary alloy coating via electroplating on carbon substrate by using less hazardous electrolyte. A detailed study was made on the effect of different concentration of reducing and complexing agents. The surface morphology and phase structure of the deposited layers were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The results confirmed that the layers of Cu-Sn-Zn was obtained with this less hazardous electrolyte.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an advanced manufacturing technology, which is flexible in building three-dimensional (3D) metallic parts. In this work, SLM experiment of a multicomponent Ni-based composite powder, which consisted of Ni, Cr, Fe, and Al powders, was conducted with favorable forming ability. The SEM, EDX, and XRD analysis were used to characterize the surface morphology, microstructure, and phase structure of as-formed Ni-based alloy. The XRD analysis showed that the as-received phase structure was Ni based solid solution. The SEM analysis of surface morphology revealed that metal agglomerates or balls were very easily formed in SLM surface, between which some pore channels existed. The surface condition and porosity could be improved by increasing laser energy input, because of a higher molten temperature and accordingly better flowing and flatting characteristics. The SEM analysis of microstructure showed that the crystalline grains were in cellular and columnar shape. Moreover, the grains were very fine with average dimensions about 5μm, due to the rapid cooling rate with rapid laser beam moving. The EDX analysis illustrated that the element contents of starting powder were uniformly distributed in as-prepared sample. A case investigation into SLM of this composite powder to form an impeller was also performed.

The Zn-Mn coatings were deposited under galvanostatic conditions from a sulfate galvanic bath. The influence of thiocarbamide additions in the bath on surface morphology, chemical and phase composition and corrosion resistance of the electrolytic Zn-Mn coatings was investigated. On the basis of these investigations it was found that Zn-Mn coatings can be obtained by the galvanostatic method. Morphology and chemical composition of the electrolytic Zn-Mn coatings depend on the thiocarbamide concentration in the galvanic bath. XRD investigations of obtained coatings showed a single phase structure (α-Mn1.08Zn2.92). The additions of thiocarbamide improve the protective properties of the Zn-Mn coatings.

Polycrystalline ڂ˽SiC thick film with mm-scaled thickness was deposited on a graphite substrate using a gaseous mixture of SiCl4 + CH4 and H2 at temperatures ranging from 1573 to 1823 K by chemical vapor deposition. Effect of deposition temperature (Tdep) on deposition rate, surface morphology and preferred orientation has been studied. The preferred orientation changed from <111> to <110> with increasing Tdep. The maximum deposition rate (Rdep) of 1125 ڌ̽˰̸−1 has been obtained. The surface morphology has changed from six-fold pyramid to five-fold facet with increasing Tdep.

In this paper, the NiCu alloy coatings were electroplated on the 304 stainless steel coupon. The XRD was used to identify the phase structure of the as-prepared products. The SEM and EDS were used to observe the surface morphology of the as-prepared coatings and the atomic composition of the as-prepared coatings, respectively. The influences of the temperature on the as-plated NiCu coatings are systematically researched. It was found that the lower of the temperature, the more compact of the coatings. With the increasing of the temperatures, the content of the nickel decrease and that of the copper increase. When the temperature is lower than 35 °C the contents of nickel and copper do not vary apparently. When the temperature is larger than 40 °C, there are significant increases of the copper content while apparent decreases of the nickel content.
