The basic purpose of native language teaching is ensuring that students develop their skills in four basic language skills at an adequate level. For this purpose, Turkish Language and Turkish language and literature teachers who work in different teaching levels, especially classroom teachers, have important duties. Reading, which is among basic language skills, is a comprehension ability for individuals to reach new information and improve themselves. The thing that is important in reading is combining new information with previous information, and making sense of new information through previously learned information. A good reader should be able to make evaluations about text in a critical manner, in other words, s/he should be able to read critically. Turkish Language and Turkish Language and Literature teachers, who have the responsibility of giving students reading skills in formal education institutions, must have improved critical reading skills. In this study, the purpose was to determine the critical reading self-efficacy levels of Turkish Language and Turkish Language and Literature teacher candidates through some variables. The study data were collected by using the “Critical Reading Self-Efficacy Scale”. The SPSS 21.00 Program was used to analyze the data. From the analysis of the data, it was found that Turkish Language and Turkish Language and Literature teacher candidates have moderate critical self-efficacy levels. It was also observed that the critical reading self-efficacy perceptions of teacher candidates do not change according to gender; however, the reading self-efficacy perceptions of Turkish Language teacher candidates were found to be higher than that of the Turkish Language and Literature teacher candidates. It was also concluded that the critical reading self-efficacy perceptions of the teacher candidates, who said that they had reading habits, were higher than the teacher candidates, who said that they did not have reading habits.

It is a scientifically and developmentally undeniable reality that the educational activities that guide education and training activities and aim to raise the nation according to the requirements of the age and keep up with the necessary arrangements for this purpose. With the periodic developments in the world, the transformation in the philosophy of education and understanding of education has brought along the application of new approaches and understandings in education. The constructivist approach that started to be applied in education with these developments is also one of the new educational approaches. Constructivist understanding is defined as a process in which students are actively involved in educational activities and new information is built on pre-learning. Constructivism is a contemporary understanding that covers all kinds of practices that the student can actively engage in the learning process, and it emphasizes that education can be successful to the extent that it can serve individual differences. It has been fifteen years since the practices on constructivism started to be implemented in our country. During this period and as a point reached, it is a question of how much this understanding is applied. With this research, it is aimed to examine the self-efficacy beliefs of Turkish language and literature teachers towards applying constructivist approach in terms of various variables.

The concept of bilingualism is gaining prominence in our daily lives due to political and social reasons. The fact that bilingualism has become an undeniable fact requires investigation of it in educational sciences. How prospective teachers perceive the concept of bilingualism will fill a gap in the literature in terms of understanding educational practices. In this context, the purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of the Turkish language and literature teacher candidates who have received formation education about the concept of "bilingualism" through metaphors. About 92 Turkish language and literature teacher candidates, studying at Çukurova University, form the research group of the study, for which qualitative research design is adopted. As a data collection tool, each student was given a guidance note with the expression of “bilingualism is like… because…” and the blanks in this guidance note were asked to be filled in. The metaphors obtained in the study were collected in different categories. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. According to the results of the research, it was determined that Turkish language and literature teacher candidates who received formation education had positive perceptions about the concept of bilingualism in a total of 12 concept categories.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the self-efficacy perceptions and writing anxiety of the Turkish language teacher candidates that receive training for learning and teaching language in a processual context. The research has been carried out with a total of 113 teacher candidates that study at the Department of Turkish Language in the first (n=56) and third (n=57) grades. The reason is that the first graders are beginner and they receive Written Expression classes; and the third graders receive Writing Education classes. The data from both grades have been collected by using the Writing Self-efficacy Perception Scale (WSPS) and the Writing Anxiety Scale (WAS) at the beginning and at the end of the term. The collected data have been analyzed both in respective class levels and by comparing to the other class level. The result of the research shows that the writing anxiety has decreased and the writing self-efficacy perception has increased in the first grader candidates. Whereas in the third grader candidates, the writing anxiety has increased and the writing self-efficacy perception has decreased. This has been interpreted as the professional awareness of the candidates increases depending on the grade level. Another result of the research is that the revision and editing (RE) factor in the writing process is higher in the female candidates than the male candidates. The findings obtained in the research bear a resemblance to the literature in some aspects, and differ from the literature in some aspects.

In learning reading skills (mahārat al-qirā’ah), especially Arabic texts, students are required to be able to reach existing indicators, which are at the level of critical reading. One effort to foster a critical attitude is to implement a group investigation strategy in the learning process. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to see how far the effectiveness of applying the group investigation strategy in learning mahārat al-qirā’ah 2 to the students of Arabic Language and Literature Department, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim. The results of this study prove that the application of the group investigation strategy applied in learning mahārat al-qirā’ah 2 can make students active and critical in analyzing discourse. The obstacle is the lack of student commitment to time so that the learning seems rushed. The solution, students are accustomed to reading Arabic texts so that they are familiar with new mufradāt (vocabulary), and commitment to the time given by lecturers so that learning is more effective and efficient.

Reading habit influences students’ achievement of reading comprehension. It is assumed that if people have good reading habit, they will have good comprehension toward reading texts. The study was highlighted to examine the association between English education department students’ reading habits and their critical reading skills. This study was conducted using a correlational research design. The population of this study consisted of 112 undegraduate students of English Education department of Tridinanti University in the academic year 2017/2018. There were 37 students participating as the sample of the study chosen by using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, a questionnaire of reading habit and a critical reading test were distributed. A correlational analysis using Pearson Product Moment was applied to seek the association between the variables measured. Based on the data analysis result, it was found that students’ reading habit was not significantly correlated with students’ critical reading skills.

Critical thinking has become an important skill in today’s intensive information flow. Because individuals need to reach the right source by evaluating the information. The development of critical thinking requires the acquisition of critical reading skills. Critical reading is the reading of individuals by questioning and evaluating text. In this research, critical reading self-efficacy of pre-service teachers were examined in terms of variables of gender, grade level, the department studied, mothers’ educational background, fathers’ education background and daily internet usage time. The sample of the current research was composed of 345 pre-service teachers. The data collection process, Critical Reading Self-Efficacy Perception Scale was used. To analyze data, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H-tests were used. As a result of Mann Whitney U-test, a significant difference was defined in critical reading self-efficacy according to the department studied. As a result of Kruskal Wallis H-test a significant difference was defined in critical reading self-efficacy and questioning, inference, analysis and evaluation sub-dimensions according to mothers’ educational background, and in critical reading self-efficacy and finding similarities and awareness sub-dimension according to daily internet usage time.
