This chapter examines Chicago's industrial decline and the response of the city's place-dependent bourgeoisie to its fading fortunes. It charts the history of industrial change between 1920 and 1975 and looks at the creation of industrial redevelopment programs in the city of Chicago in the postwar years as city leaders responded to these industrial changes. It also argues that the city of Chicago experienced industrial decline from the 1920s and city leaders implemented several industrial renewal initiatives in the postwar period in an attempt to reverse industrial decline. The chapter explains how the industrial renewal failed, emphasizing on the place-dependent coalitions of developers, financiers, politicians, small business owners, and industrial managers that worked to counter deindustrialization were fighting a losing battle. It mentions alliances that consisted of people from real estate, health, education, finance, and government that pushed a new vision for Chicago.

When performing even a cursory analysis of the visual image of contemporary Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, one simply cannot ignore its ancient history, the political influence of nearby powers and the almost age-old dependence on Soviet Russia. The regaining of independence in 1991, associated with the policy of then-national leader Heydar Aliyev, stimulated the young country’s ambition to open up to the world and organise an international cultural event. The preparation for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 initiated another construction boom in the history of Baku, fuelled with petrodollars, and became an occasion to present a new vision of the capital. In the years 2007–2012, numerous new cultural, artistic and sports buildings were constructed and which are now a hallmark and symbol of contemporary Baku. One such building, which creates a new, futuristic city space and is presented in the article, is the Heydar Aliyev Centre, a centre of art and museum designed by Zaha Hadid. The author notes the creative intent, external appearance and structure of the building, as well as new means of expression in creating place-based ambience. Also noted were the use of contemporary art in the creation of attractive utilitarian spaces. Other presented buildings display the ages-old symbols of the ‘Land of Fire’ in a new way and are embedded into the contemporary panorama of the city

This article investigates the political processes and attitudes that have prevented San Francisco from adequately dealing with many of its challenges. It posits that the city is at risk of becoming a caricature of its former self if attitudes towards accepting and preparing for the future do not change as a chronic shortage of housing threatens to push many long-time residents out. The history of anti-development attitudes since the 1980s is reviewed, tracing the rebound from post-industrial decline to becoming a highly desirable residential location and the home to some of the world’s most innovative companies.

The history of the West German coal mining industry since the late 1950s can be seen as a story of industrial decline and at the same time as a success story for a corporatist politics of “social responsibility”. The mining trade union together with the state and the companies all participated in sustaining a mode of shrinkage that allowed to avoid sudden mass unemployment and keep up a slow fading of the industry over six decades. This process, however, was a matter of constant re-negotiation. Calling on the principle of social responsibility constituted a crucial element in the moral economy of industrial decline. Yet the state’s structural and financial support for the mining communities went along with changing work environments and increased pressures for the mine workers. This article juxtaposes the memories of shop stewards, trade union officials and other workers’ representatives who had to negotiate such terms of industrial change with the narratives of mine workers and employees subjected to these measures. It asks for the extent to which the narratives and interpretations of mine closure overlap or differ for these two memory collectives.

As a measure to reduce tax evasion and informality, the Fiscal Incorporation Regime (RIF) arises with the 2014 tax reform, which generated a radical change in tax obligations and in the way taxpayers must comply, a situation that mainly affects micro and small enterprises, so this work aims to identify the affectations and benefits derived from the incorporation into the RIF of micro-enterprises in the city of Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato. The research is based on a qualitative study, applying the in-depth semi-structured interview technique to 30 taxpayers who have been taxing in the RIF since January 1, 2014. The main results indicate that the tax reform is not entirely negative, the intention of the government of reducing informality has been met, however, the execution has setbacks, as small business owners do not have sufficient fiscal culture or technological preparation to fulfill their obligations on their own, in addition to the fact that the increase in operating expenses represents a strong load for companies, a situation that places them at a disadvantage with respect to their competitors.
