Effect of Cryotherapy on Lower Limb Flexibility and Power in Recreational Players: An Experimental Study

Introduction: Cryotherapy has been a widely used thermotherapy modality in sports injuries. The main focus of research on cryotherapy was to find out its effects on functional performance measures of the players. Cryotherapy is known to dampen the stretch reflex and reduce muscle temperature which might indirectly influence the flexibility and power which are the important components of any performance. Hence, it becomes necessary to study the changes, if any, on the flexibility and power post cryotherapy application. Aim: To determine the effects of cryotherapy on lower limb flexibility and power in adult recreational players. Materials and Methods: The present study was an experimental study conducted on 40 recreational players of either gender, between the age range of 18-25 years, who played various forms of recreational sports and had hamstrings and calf muscle tightness were included in the study. Hamstring tightness was assessed by Active Knee Extension Test (AKET) and calf muscle tightness by Weight Bearing Lunge test (WBLT), while power was assessed by vertical jump test. Both the limbs were given cold pack on bilateral calf and hamstrings for 20 minutes for three days. Outcomes were measured on 3rd day and paired t-test was used to analyse the pre and post-treatment difference, p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: A total of 40 recreational players were included in the study with the mean age of 22.15±1.36 years, of which 20 were males and 20 were females with mean Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23.07±3.36 kg/m2. The right calf muscle flex (pretreatment=13.7 cm to post-treatment=14.71 cm, p<0.05) along with left side flexibility (pretreatment=14.2 cm to post-treatment=15.07 cm, p<0.05). The hamstring flexibility improved significantly from mean, pretreatment=45.6 degrees to post-treatment=50.6 degrees (p<0.05) on the right side while on the left side, a non significant improvement from pretreatment=52.38 degrees to post- treatment=55.22 degrees (p=0.011) was seen. The power showed a non significant reduction from pretreatment=17.61 to post- treatment=16.76 (p=0.016). Conclusion: Cryotherapy increases the flexibility of calf and hamstring muscles and reduces lower limb power after three days of cryotherapy application.

Exercise-induced spin-spin relaxation time (T2) shifts in magnetic resonance (MR) images were used to test the hypothesis that more muscle would be used to perform a given submaximal task after 5 wk of unweighting. Before and after unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS), 7 subjects performed 5 sets of 10 unilateral concentric actions with the quadriceps femoris muscle group (QF) at each of 4 loads: 25, 40, 55, and 70% of maximum. T2-weighted MR images of the thigh were collected at rest and after each relative load. ULLS elicited a 20% decrease in strength of the left unweighted QF and a 14% decrease in average cross-sectional area (CSA) with no changes in the right weight-bearing QF. Average CSA of the left or right QF showing exercise-induced T2 shift increased as a function of exercise intensity both before and after ULLS. On average, 12 +/- 1, 15 +/- 2, 18 +/- 2, and 22 +/- 1 cm2 of either QF showed elevated T2 for the 25, 40, 55, and 70% loads, respectively, before ULLS. Average CSA of the left but not the right QF, showing elevated T2 after ULLS, was increased to 16 +/- 2, 23 +/- 3, 31 +/- 7, and 39 +/- 5 cm2, respectively. The results indicated that unweighting increased exercise-induced T2 shift in MR images, presumably due to greater muscle mass involvement in exercise after than before unweighting, suggesting a change in motor control.

<p>Introduction : A lot of research has been done to determine if handwriting or typing note influenced short-term memory, however, the results obtained are still controversial. Therefore this study is structured to see the effect of note taking methods by handwriting and typing on short-term memory.</p><p>Aim : The aims of this study were to increase the performance of students in Faculty of Medicine Pelita Harapan University as well as providing the right and effective method of taking notes.<strong></strong></p><p>Method : Experimental study design was chosen in this study. Study population is students of faculty of medicine Pelita Harapan University batch 2015. 40 samples will be divide randomly into two, one group will take a note by handwriting and another by typing. Each group is required to watch a video about 15 minutes long.  The results were analyzed statistically using T-test.</p><p>Result : The average of  new information that can be remembered by group that take a note by handwriting significantly (p&lt;0,05) higher than group than take a note by typing with a p-value of 0,009.</p><p>Conclusion : Take a note by handwriting allows people to remember more new information than typing.</p>

Eight subjects participated in a 6-wk unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) study to determine the influence of reduced weight bearing on human skeletal muscle morphology. The right shoe was outfitted with a platform sole that prevented the left foot from bearing weight while walking with crutches, yet it allowed freedom of movement about the ankle, knee, and hip. Magnetic resonance images pre- and post-ULLS showed that thigh muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) decreased (P less than 0.05) 12% in the suspended left lower limb, whereas right thigh muscle CSA did not change. Likewise, magnetic resonance images collected post-ULLS showed that muscle CSA was 14% smaller (P less than 0.05) in the left than in the right leg. The decrease in muscle CSA of the thigh was due to a twofold greater response of the knee extensors (-16%, P less than 0.05) than knee flexors (-7%, P less than 0.05). The rectus femoris muscle of the knee extensors showed no change in CSA, whereas the three vastus muscles showed similar decreases of approximately 16% (P less than 0.05). The apparent atrophy in the leg was due mainly to reductions in CSA of the soleus (-17%) and gastrocnemius muscles (-26%). Biopsies of the left vastus lateralis pre- and post-ULLS showed a 14% decrease (P less than 0.05) in average fiber CSA. The decrease was evident in both type I (-12%) and II (-15%) fibers. The number of capillaries surrounding the different fiber types was unchanged after ULLS.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Context:Isokinetic strength and functional performance are used to assess recovery after rehabilitation. It is not known whether low-speed closed-linear-kinetic isokinetic muscle strength correlates with functional performance.Objective:To investigate the relationship between linear closed (CKC) and open (OKC) concentric isokinetic strength of the dominant lower-limb extensors and functional performance.Design:Correlational analysis.Setting:University laboratory.Participants:Thirty uninjured men and women (age = 20.9 ± 2.4 years).Main Outcome Measures:Peak CKC and OKC isokinetic strength and best score from a shuttle run for time, single-leg vertical jump, and single-leg hop for distance.Results:Neither lower-limb CKC nor OKC isokinetic strength measured at low speeds correlated highly with performance on the functional tasks of jumping, hopping, and speed/agility.Conclusions:Although the basis of both closed and open isokinetic strength must be appreciated, they should not be the only determinants of functional performance.

BACKGROUND: The stability of a joint depends on the arrangement of the articular surfaces. Thefailure of acetabulum to deepen along with associated relaxed capsule can be a causative factor leadingto congenital dislocation of hip in babies. The right traumatic hip dislocation is less uncommon ascompared to left side in adults.OBJECTIVE: To correlate the majority of right-footed population with the bony parameters of hipjoint bilaterally and to find out its association with left congenital and right acquired traumaticdislocation of hip.MATERIAL AND METHODS: As the right footed people are considerably more (90%) than the leftfooted and this study work was correlated with the bones collected from cadavers in Anatomydepartment of KGMC Peshawar from January 2014 to December 2014. We included 14 pairs of femurs,14 pairs of hip bones in this study to see the structural differences when dominant hip joint is comparedwith non-dominant hip joints. The measurements were performed with the help of vernier caliper.RESULTS: The mean horizontal diameter of right (dominant) and left acetabulum was 50.14±0.69 mmand 52.35±0.65mm. The mean horizontal depth of right and left acetabulum was 22.21±0.82mm and25.25±0.52mm. The horizontal diameter of right and left femur was 46.42±0.62mm and 43.85±01mm.The thickness of femoral head was 26.71±01mm on right (dominant) side but this thickness was29.17±01mm on left side.CONCLUSION: The left acetabulum was having a significant larger diameter in adult, allowing thesmaller left femoral head to fit snugly which can be correlated with the more common left congenitaldislocation hip. On the other hand, in adults, the left acetabulum is deeper, allowing the thicker left headof femur as an adjustment for weight bearing functionwhile the larger rightfemoral head fit into acomparatively shallow socket. This may be a factor to improve mobility at the cost of stability; as righttraumatic dislocationhip is less uncommon as compared to left side.KEY WORDS: Hip joint, Ball and socket joint. The objective of the trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a short and intensive physiotherapy programme versus usual care, mainly consisting of walking. Fifty-eight male unilateral lower limb amputees were randomised over intensive care (N = 29) and usual care (N = 29); this study was carried out in a clinical environment, within the premises of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in Southern Myanmar. The amputees in the experimental group received a three-day programme built around 7 specific exercises, lasting approximately one hour altogether. Effects were assessed on: 2-minute walk test, physiological cost index (PCI), amount of weight bearing on both legs, 5 questions of the Functional Measure for Amputees questionnaire and the timed up and go test. Trans-tibial amputees were tested the first day they were fitted and then 2 days later; trans-femoral amputees were tested when walking out of the parallel bars and 4 days later. The experimental group showed significant improvement in the 2-minute walk test (p = 0.02), in the PCI (p = 0.02) and in the maximal weight bearing test on the amputated leg (p = 0.04). Despite limited means, research remains feasible in a developing country; this study has demonstrated that physiotherapy is effective in improving functional performance of lower limb amputees and therefore has its place in every rehabilitation centre.

This study was conducted to compare the futsal-specific skills and biomechanical characteristics of futsal female players at collegiate and club levels. Ten collegiate and ten club level female futsal players were voluntarily participated in the study. Four futsal-specific skills tests (i.e., Massey Futsal Shooting Test, Illinois Agility Test, 20m sprint test and Futsal Intermittent Endurance Test) and four lower limb biomechanical tests (i.e., Drop Vertical Jump, Counter Movement Jump, Star Excursion Balance Test and isokinetic strength and power at 60°/s and 300°/s of knee flexors and extensors) were completed by the participants. Anthropometric parameters such as body weight, standing height and body fat composition were collected. Independent T-test was used to to determine the mean differences across groups in all variables. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between both groups except for MFST (p value = 0.00). The shot speed for club group was statistically faster (52.16 km.h-1) than collegiate group (43.44 km.h-1). The duration to complete the shots for club group was statistically shorter (4.35s) than collegiate group (4.43s). More total scores were obtained by collegiate group (4.43 point) than club group (4.35 point). These results conclude that both groups had similar level of strength and power for the lower limb, except for shooting skill. Training should focus on strength development for hamstring and quadriceps muscles because these muscles may affect shooting speed in both collegiate and club players.

AbstrakKeselamatan pasien merupakan dasar dari pelayanan kesehatan yang baik. Pengetahuan tenaga kesehatan dalam sasaran keselamatan pasien terdiri dari ketepatan identifikasi pasien, peningkatan komunikasi yang efektif, peningkatan keamanan obat yang perlu diwaspadai, kepastian tepat lokasi, prosedur, dan tepat pasien operasi, pengurangan risiko infeksi, pengurangan risiko pasien jatuh. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui hubungan antara pengetahuan dengan penerapan keselamatan pasien pada petugas kesehatan di Puskesmas Kedaung Wetan Kota Tangerang. Metode Penelitian menggunakan deskriptif korelasi menggunakan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi sebanyak 50 responden. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan total sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa lembar kuesioner. Teknik analisa diatas menggunakan analisa Univariat dan Bivariat. Hasil Penelitian ada Hubungan Pengetahuan dengan Penerapan Keselamatan Pasien pada Petugas Kesehatan, dengan hasil, p value sebesar 0,013 &lt; 0,05 maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada Hubungan Pengetahuan dengan Penerapa Keselamatan Pasien pada Petugas Kesehatan. Kesimpulan penelitian ada Hubungan Pengetahuan dengan Penerapan Keselamatan Pasien.. AbstrackPatient safety is the basis of good health services. Knowledge of health personnel in patient safety targets consists of accurate patient identification, increased effective communication, increased safety of the drug that needs to be watched, certainty in the right location, procedure, and precise patient surgery, reduction in risk of infection, reduction in risk of falling patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge and the application of patient safety to health workers in the Kedaung Wetan Health Center, Tangerang City. The research method uses descriptive correlation using cross sectional approach. The population is 50 respondents. The sampling technique uses total sampling. The instrument used was a questionnaire sheet. The analysis technique above uses Univariate and Bivariate analysis. The results of the study there is a Relationship of Knowledge with the Implementation of Patient Safety in Health Officers, with the result, p value of 0.013 &lt;0.05, it can be concluded that there is a Relationship between Knowledge and Patient Safety Implementation in Health Officers. BACKGROUND Radiology now plays a major role to diagnose, monitoring, and management of several diseases; numerous diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures involve exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiology now plays a major role to diagnose, monitoring, and management of several diseases; numerous diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures involve exposure to ionizing radiation. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to discover and compare the awareness level of radiation doses, protection issues, and risks among radiology staff in Jeddah hospitals. METHODS A cross-sectional survey containing 25 questions on personal information and various aspects of radiation exposure doses and risks was designed using an online survey tool and the link was emailed to all radiology staff in eight tertiary hospitals in Jeddah. The authors were excluded from the study. A P-value of < .05 was used to identify statistical significance. All analyses were performed using SPSS, version 21. RESULTS Out of 156 participants the majority 151 (96.8%) had poor knowledge score, where the mean scores were 2.4±1.3 for doses knowledge, 2.1±1.1for cancer risks knowledge, 2.3±0.6 for general information, and 6.7±1.9 for the total score. Only 34.6% of the participants were aware of the dosage of a single-view chest x-ray, and 9.0% chose the right answer for the approximate effective dose received by a patient in a two-view. 42.9% were able to know the correct dose of CT abdomen single phase. There is a significant underestimation of cancer risk of CT studies especially for CT abdomen where only 23.7% knew the right risk. A p-value of <0.05 was used to identify statistical significance. No significant difference of knowledge score was detected regarding gender (P =.2) or work position (P=.66). CONCLUSIONS Our survey results show considerable inadequate knowledge in all groups without exception. We recommended a conscientious effort to deliver more solid education and obtain more knowledge in these matters and providing periodic training courses to teach how to minimize the dose of radiation and to avoid risk related.
