Background: There is a growing interest worldwide to identify novel functional foods able to exert important biochemical activities with low or without toxic effect. Accordingly, the use of Salvia hispanica L. (chia) a Mexican herb, has tremendously grown as an agriculture crop owing to the nutritional and medicinal values. The objective of this study was to evaluate phytochemical composition of chia seeds and prove their claim for functional properties. Materials and Methods: The determination of total phenolic, flavonoid and condensed tannin contents of chia seeds were carried out by the Folin-Ciocalteu, the aluminum trichloride and the vanilline acid spectrometric methods. Antioxidant activities of chia seeds extracts were assessed using free radical scavenging assay DPPH, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Potential FRAP and β-Carotene bleaching assay. Results: Chia seeds contain high levels of total phenolic and flavonoid contents 19.06±0.14 mg GAE/ g DW and 12.3±0.04 mg CE/g DW, respectively. The content of condensed tannins was estimated at 8.32±0.01 mg CE/g DW. The flavonoid extract showed a higher antioxidant potential against DPPH, FRAP and the bleaching of β-Carotene (0.27±0.00, 0.06±0.03 and 0.39±0.01 mg/mL, respectively). Conclusion: Following the obtained results, we should explore the use of this seeds in food products due its nutritional and chemical composition, possible human health benefits and role as a functional food.

Rose petals have been applied as food additives in teas, cakes and flavor extracts. The aim of this research study was to explore and reveal the antioxidant potential of aqueous extracts of rose petals belonging to nine genotypes of rose (wild as well as hybrid). The in vitro antioxidant activities of roses were studied by lipid peroxidation assay, DPPH radical scavenging assay, iron chelation assay, phosphomolybdenum reduction assay and total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The aqueous extract showed inhibition against lipid peroxidation (TBARS), induced by prooxidants (10 µM FeSO4) in mice liver homogenate. The free radical scavenging activities of the extracts were determined by scavenging of the DPPH radical. Extracts also showed metal chelating activities and high antioxidant activity in the phosphomolybdenum assay. The high content of phenolics and flavonoids detected in aqueous extracts may be responsible for the antioxidant activity. Amongst the different rose genotypes, screened, Rosa moschata (musk rose) was found to carry slightly higher antioxidant potential, owing to its higher phytochemical content.

Objective: To develop vacuum dried (VD) Ambarella fruit powder and Ambarella fruit incorporated soup mix from large and miniature Ambarella and investigation of antioxidants and anti-diabetic properties. Methods: Ethanolic extracts of two Ambarella varieties were analyzed for antioxidant potential in terms of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), ferrous reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), radical scavenging activities of DPPH and ABTS and α-amylase inhibitory activity. Results: Fresh dwarf Ambarella showed a significantly (p<0.05) high TPC (3.35±0.10 mgGAE/g) while fresh large Ambarella showed a significantly (p<0.05) high FRAP (0.71±0.13 mgTE/g) and DPPH (3.57±0.31 mg TE/g). In comparison of ethanolic extracts of VD Ambarella powders, a significantly (p<0.05) higher antioxidant potential in terms of FRAP (4.19±0.06 mgTE/g) exhibited in dwarf variety while significantly (p<0.05) higher ABTS (4.03±0.27 mgTE/g) and DPPH (3.00±0.49mgTE/g) exhibited in large Ambarella. Alpha amylase inhibition activities of fresh fruits of large and dwarf were 46.30±4.07% and 49.55±3.18% where as in VD powders were 27.59±5.03% and 15.58±5.86% respectively. An instant soup mixture was developed incorporating 20% of VD powder from large variety due its abundance. The antioxidant potential of ethanolic extract of the soup mixture in terms of TPC, TFC, ABTS, and FRAP were 0.55±0.00 mgGAE/g, 0.04±0.00 mgQE/g, 1.65±0.06 mgTE/g, and 0.04±0.15 mgTE/g. Alpha amylase inhibition activity of soup mixture was 39.49±0.29%. Conclusion: The both types of fresh fruits exhibited higher antioxidant potential except FRAP and higher anti-amylase inhibition than VD Ambarella powder.

Present study was designed to evaluate the nutritional values of red skin potatoes collected fromGujranwala and Lahore regions of Pakistan. Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) of Gujranwala and Lahorewere found to contain moisture contents of 5.00 and 5.15%, respectively. Fat was 0.19% in S. tuberosumof Gujranwala whereas Lahore potatoes were found to contain fat 0.2%. Fibre content of S. tuberosum ofGujranwala was 16.47% while S. tuberosum of Lahore had 13.45% fibre. Protein contents of S. tuberosumof Gujranwala were 12.89% whereas for S. tuberosum of Lahore were 13.11%. The water extract showedsignificant free radical scavenging activities in DPPH radical scavenging antioxidant assay and antioxidantactivity was increased in a dose dependent manner. These results suggest that potato (S. tuberosum) is notonly a cheap source of very important nutritents but also has antioxidant activities which are helpful tomaintain different physiological functions of body.

The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activities of Ruta montana L.  extracts. This activity was evaluated by three methods : DPPH (2, 2'-diphenyl- 1- picrylhydrazy), bleaching of β-carotene and chelation of ferrous iron. Results showed that ethyl acetate extract (EAE) represents the highest amount of total polyphenols, tannins and flavonoids with 257,1 ± 0,703µg gallic acid equivalent/mg of extract,  251 ± 1.41 µg tannic acid equivalent /mg of extract,117,4 ± 3,451 µg quercetin equivalents/mg of extract, 139,5 ± 4,107 µg rutin equivalents/mg of extract, respectively. In the DPPH assay, ethyl acetate extract showed the higher scavenging capacity (IC50 = 0.044 ± 0.001 mg/ml) followed by methanol, aqueous and chloroform extract. Whereas, AqE showed the best chelating effect and the best inhibitory capacity of the coupled oxidation of linoleic acid/ β-carotene. Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) sprout is a popular fresh vegetable, tasty and high in antioxidants. To increase yield and quality after the occurrence of both abiotic and biotic stresses, the application of seaweed extracts is of great importance. Hence, this study was conducted to determine the effect of Ascophyllum nodosum extract (ANE) in the presence of salt on the antioxidant potential of V. radiata sprouts. Different concentrations of ANE viz. 0.00, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.50% and NaCl 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mM alone and in combinations were tested for researching the antioxidant potential of V. radiata sprouts at 0, 24, and 36 h of sprouting. The DPPH free-radical-scavenging activity of sprouts of V. radiata was found to increase with time and peaked at 24 h of treatment. The A. nodosum extract (0.01%) could reverse the ill effect of the low level of salinity posed by up to 25 mM NaCl. The increasing salinity deteriorated the antioxidant activity using ABTS method of sprouts down to 20.45% of the control at 100 mM NaCl. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and reducing power of V. radiata sprouts was found to increase till 36 h of sprouting. A slight increase in TPC, TFC and reducing power was observed when seeds were treated with low concentrations of ANE. The elevation in TPC, TFC and reducing power upon treatment with low concentrations of ANE was also noticed in sprouts in saline combinations. Alpha amylase inhibition activity was found to reach a (67.16% ± 0.9) maximum at 24 h of sprouting at a 0.01% concentration of ANE. Tyrosinase inhibition and alpha glucosidase inhibition was 88.0% ± 2.11 and 84.92% ± 1.2 at 36 h of sprouting, respectively, at 0.01% concentration of ANE. A. nodosum extract is natural, environmentally friendly, and safe, and could be used as one of the strategies to decline stress at a low level and enhance the antioxidant activities in V. radiata sprouts, thus increasing its potential to be developed as an antioxidant-based functional food.

AbstractThe objective of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant activities of six medicinal plants growing in Algerian Aurès Mountains. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents were measured using colorimetric methods, and the antioxidant capacities were evaluated using the DPPH radical scavenging and β-carotene bleaching tests. Juniperus phoenica L. had significantly the higher total phenolic compounds (53.6±3.86 mg GAE.g−1 DM) (p<0.05); followed by Romarinus officinalis L. (26.1±3.15 mg GAE.g−1 DM) and Artemisia campestris L. (20.5±1.99 mg GAE.g−1 DM). Artemisia campestris L. had significantly the higher flavonoid contents (11.1±0.56 mg QE.g−1 DM) than other studied plants (p<0.05). The best antiradical activity was observed in Thymus algeriensis extracts (EC50=11.1±0.33 µg.ml−1) and Romarinus officinalis L. (EC50=15.3±0.9 µg.ml−1). β-carotene bleaching test showed that the herbs’ phenolic compounds Antioxidant Activity (AA%) value was found in the range of 64-84%, whereas that of the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid was 51±2.4%. The present results indicate that medicinal plants from the Algerian Aurès mountains could be explored in food and pharmaceutical industries for development of natural’s antioxidant agents.

Annona nutans (Annonaceae) is a plant species found in Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and the Brazilian Cerrado, specifically in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). Its common names are Araticû-Mi and Araticû-Ñu. The research contributions regarding the chemical composition and biological activities of extracts from A. nutans are rare, with only four articles being found in the literature. Therefore, the present study evaluated the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of the hydromethanolic fraction (FHMeOH) using carrageenan-induced paw edema and hot-plate tests. In addition, the antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging, total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin content assays and quantification of the major metabolites by LC-MS were performed. Oral treatment with the FHMeOH (at a dose of 300 mg.kg-1) significantly reduced paw edema 2 h and 4 h after the inflammatory stimulus. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment with the FHMeOH (50 and 100 mg.kg-1) proved to be most effective, and the inhibition of acute inflammation was still visible 6 h after carrageenan injection. At doses of 50 and 100 mg.kg-1 (i.p.), FHMeOH exhibits central antinociceptive effects by increasing the latency of the reaction in the hot-plate model. The FHMeOH showed antioxidant potential, and the metabolites quercetin-3-O-galactoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-galactoside, quercetin-3-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→2)-galactopyranoside, and chlorogenic acid were identified and quantified by LC-MS. Our results indicate, for the first time, that FHMeOH has anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and antioxidant potential, and it is a promising source of studies for new herbal medicines

Agaricus blazei Murrill is an edible fungus. It is considered as a functional food and its extract is also used as a natural therapy for human diseases related to metabolism in Asian countries. Polyphenols of ABM are powerful radical scavengers and providing potent antioxidant benefits. This study aimed to optimize the extraction conditions of polyphenols from Agaricus blazei Murrill by response surface methodology and determination of its antioxidant activities. The influence of extraction temperature, extraction time, and solid to liquid ratio on each response was investigated. The optimal extract conditions for Agaricus blazei Murrill polyphenols were at 72°C for 2.5 h, and solid to liquid ratio of 1:20. Under the optimal conditions, the total phenolic content of Agaricus blazei Murrill was 2.92 mg/g, which was close to the predicted value (3.04 mg/g). The antioxidant activities of ABM extract were analyzed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities and the reducing power. The EC50 values of Agaricus blazei Murrill extract on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), and hydroxyl radicals were 0.44, 0.30, and 2.84 mg/mL, respectively. The findings indicated that Agaricus blazei Murrill extract provide a beneficial effect on antioxidant activity. It suggests that Agaricus blazei Murrill has the potential to be a valuable source of natural antioxidant.

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of non-polar and polar extracts of Glochidion velutinum Wight have been studied. The phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and colorimetric method was used to quantify flavonoids. Antioxidant activity was also measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay and disk diffusion method was applied to test antimicrobial activity. Of the hexane, chloroform, ethanol and methanol extracts of Glochidion velutinum, higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents were found in methanol and ethanol extracts. Moreover, ethanol and methanol extracts also showed better antimicrobial and antioxidant activities than the other two extracts. The presence of various phytochemicals e.g. alkaloids, tannins, phenols etc in these extracts also substantiated the observed antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Vol. 41, No. 2, 247-252, 2017

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protein content and antioxidant activity of instant and raw Edible bird’s nest (EBN). This study was conducted using two types of EBNs, which are instant and raw samples. All EBN samples were extracted via three types of extraction method, namely, salt, alkaline, and hot extractions. Lowry’s method was used to analyze protein content and the antioxidant activities were analyzed via free radical scavenging assay 1,1-diphenyl-2-pycrylhydrazyl (DPPH), total phenolic content (TPC) assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). This study showed that the highest protein was 2165.90 µg/mL obtained from raw EBN extracted via alkaline solution. In addition, it was also found that the protein concentration of raw EBN was higher compared to instant EBN for all types of extraction procedures. Results from antioxidant assay showed that there was no significant difference between DPPH and FRAP of both EBN. Moreover, TPC results showed that the there was no phenolic compounds detected via all extraction procedures.
