Surface materials that turn into hard surface material and lack of vegetations are some of the effects of rapid development that can affect the micro climate in urban areas. This happened on Cik Ditiro corridor in the city of Yogyakarta which had quite dense activities, this was marked by various functions of land use and human activities throughout the day. The method is simulation method that uses the EnviMET 4.0 software and the empirical measurements. This method is to simulate the value of each climate variable in existing conditions and ideal conditions. The results of this research show that the condition of the Cik Ditiro corridor still belongs to the heat which is uncomfortable thermal conditions. Recommendations result of this research is to make better thermal comfort on corridor. The result of this research to give recommendations in terms of improving better for thermal comfort.

Crowded city will be impact to the temperature of urban areas. This condition is commonly known as the urban heat island effect. It’s impact to the activity that happened in the urban space. Recently, Fort Oranje (urban space/square) that has history value has been revitalized as an urban public space that is crowd visited by Ternate’s people. Therefore, the thermal comfort becomes an important thing and that is available to the users. The research is aim to know the influence of space configuration change to the aspect of thermal comfort in the urban public space. The method that is used in this research is empirical measurement and simulation method using Envi-MET software. This method is used to simulate the condition of thermal area in Fort Oranje. The result of this research showed that space configuration that change before and after the development of Ternate waterfront city impact to the thermal conditions in Fort Oranje public space.

Yogyakarta is known as a Tourism City because there is a lot of tourist destination that exists. One of the uniqueness of the city of Yogyakarta is the royal system that has been part of the government until this day. Tamansari Water Castle is a historic site used by the King and also the royal family for recreation. As one of the main destinations for tourists, it is important to note how the performance of the space formed in providing comfort for visitors. This study aims to determine how the microclimate characteristics in the Tamansari area, which have an impact on the thermal comfort felt by visitors. Observations are made to discover the elements forming the outdoor space such as the building mass layout and composition, the type of surface material, and also the type of vegetation that exists. This study uses simulation method with Envi-met software, using observational data as input. The simulation process will show how the microclimate conditions are formed in the Tamansari area, which includes air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind movement. The results represent that the landscape design in Tamansari has considered the thermal comfort through surface material and vegetation they have.

Anthropogenic land use has led to the loss and fragmentation of native habitats and disruption to ecosystem processes, resulting in a decline in landscape connectivity and biodiversity. Here, in order to find the potentials of improvements in ecological connectivity, we provide a spatial analysis to present differences in ecological connectivity based on land cover maps and urban habitat maps in Suwon city, Republic of Korea. We generated two permeability maps for use in a network analysis, one being land cover and the other urban habitat, including a 5-km buffer area from the city boundary. We then determined the current-flow betweenness centrality (CFBC) for each map. Our results indicate that forests are typically the most highly connected areas in both maps. However, in the land cover map results, nearly all high-priority areas were in the mountainous region (CFBC value: 0.0100 ± 0.0028), but the urban habitat indicated that grasslands and rivers within the city also significantly contribute to connectivity (CFBC value: 0.0071 ± 0.0022). The CFBC maps developed here could be used as a reference when introducing green infrastructure in cities. Before establishing ecological networks for urban areas, future work should integrate the land use and ecological data of different administrative districts with continuous ecological connection.

Semarang is the capital city of Central Java Province, as a metropolitan city, Semarang has the capablity to support the rapid development of the city , one of the evident is the highly of activity on physical infrastucture, one of them is the construction of residential areas along the high rate of population growth. Settlement area development activities emerge the negatively impact to reduce the existence of open space area. This study uses a quantitative method through positivistic approach. Research data presented by the form of figures and the analysis using the statistics. This study was first carried out in 2006 and 2011 to analyze the spatial through digitized the image map of Semarang, and the results of the digitization of spatial land area of open space and a residential area, which is used to formulate some stage subsequent analysis: 1) Identification and analysis of the influence of the development of residential areas against the open space in the city, 2) Analysis of the acceleration of the projected change of land per year in Semarang in 2006-2020, 3) Analysis of the application of open space 30% (sample in District Tembalang). The result of this analysis showed the relationship between the relevant mutual influence. The rate of population growth and development of residential areas with a relationship of mutual influence supply and demand. Then, as the development of residential areas causes the reduction of open space. In additon, the background of this problem is how to formulate the recommendations to control the land use plan , in order to create an ideal city land use in the future.

The expansion of urban areas and the increase in the number of buildings and urbanization characteristics, such as roads, affect the meteorological environment in urban areas, resulting in weakened pollutant dispersion. First, this paper uses GIS (geographic information system) spatial analysis technology and landscape ecology analysis methods to analyze the dynamic changes in land cover and landscape patterns in Chengdu as a result of urban development. Second, the most appropriate WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model parameterization scheme is selected and screened. Land-use data from different development stages in the city are included in the model, and the wind speed and temperature results simulated using new and old land-use data (1980 and 2015) are evaluated and compared. Finally, the results of the numerical simulations by the WRF-Chem air quality model using new and old land-use data are coupled with 0.25° × 0.25°-resolution MEIC (Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China) emission source data from Tsinghua University. The results of the sensitivity experiments using the WRF-Chem model for the city under different development conditions and during different periods are discussed. The meteorological conditions and pollution sources remained unchanged as the land-use data changed, which revealed the impact of urban land-use changes on the simulation results of PM2.5 atmospheric pollutants. The results show the following. (1) From 1980 to 2015, the land-use changes in Chengdu were obvious, and cultivated land exhibited the greatest changes, followed by forestland. Under the influence of urban land-use dynamics and human activities, both the richness and evenness of the landscape in Chengdu increased. (2) The microphysical scheme WSM3 (WRF Single–Moment 3 class) and land-surface scheme SLAB (5-layer diffusion scheme) were the most suitable for simulating temperatures and wind speeds in the WRF model. The wind speed and temperature simulation results using the 2015 land-use data were better than those using the 1980 land-use data when assessed according to the coincidence index and correlation coefficient. (3) The WRF-Chem simulation results obtained for PM2.5 using the 2015 land-use data were better than those obtained using the 1980 land-use data in terms of the correlation coefficient and standard deviation. The concentration of PM2.5 in urban areas was higher than that in the suburbs, and the concentration of PM2.5 was lower on Longquan Mountain in Chengdu than in the surrounding areas.

<p>More than 80% of shallow lake ecosystems in the Yangtze floodplain suffer significant disturbances from the 50’s, especially eutrophication. These environmental degradations and subsequent loss of services are related with the important and rapid development of the agriculture, industry, urban areas and the population boom in the region. Lake Taihu is one of the largest lakes of the floodplain and represents an important water resource (for drinking and fishing) for the population of the two big cities on the lake shore. This lake experimented two shifts toward the degradation of the trophic state: one in the 50-60’s and a second in 80’s.</p><p>In order to document the causes of these ecological shifts, we applied the DNA metabarcoding approach on lake sediments and focused on plants as proxy of land use. Whereas this proxy has been successfully applied in many lakes over the world, it has never been tested in large shallow lakes and not in China either.</p><p>We show important changes in land use in 50’s and 80’s related with agricultural developments (i.e. intensification) and urban expansion, respectively. In fact, in the 50’s crop plants are increasing (rapeseed and/or cabbage, rice and/or wheat, barley and <em>Poaceae</em>) whereas in 80’s, we record the development of several plants associated to gardens (e.g. ornamental species). Moreover, this last period is characterised by the presence of trees mostly cultivated along stream banks to protect dikes against erosion. Between the 80’s and the years 2000, the plant diversity recorded in the sediment strongly increase, which may be due to higher detrital inputs (i.e. more efficient DNA transfer). The timing in land-use changes corresponds to the main shifts in lake trophic state.</p>

This study aimed at obtaining factual information and overview to the development of land use patterns for buildings in urban areas by interval time period, both spatially and aspatially, by utilizing high-resolution satellite photo image (high resolution spatial image) combined with field observations. This research used survey method approach. The data of this study consisted of primary and secondary data classified into spatial and aspatial data in the form of time series obtained through documents recording techniques, field observations, previous mapping sources, as well as depth interviews. The analysis technique used Image Processing Analysis through programs and software Arc View. The result of research showed that there was a quite rapid development of land use patterns for building in Palu within the last 50 years (≤ 1970 till 2010) It had building addition in 65,173 units (82.28%), from 14,032 units in ≤1970 to 79,205 units in 2010, and the addition of extensive use of land for building was 4723.52 ha (89.06%), from 516.98 ha in ≤ 1970 to 4723.52 ha in 2010. The development level of land use patterns for building was getting along with the size of distribution and population growth in Palu.

<p>City is a space that serves as a center place of activities, over time the city was experiencing growth and development, both physical and non-physical conditions. So these conditions affect the change in the pattern of land use, activity system as well as the pattern of people and goods mobility that are happening in the urban system. The phenomenon of the emergence of new urban areas (cities and towns) in IKK Gemolong causes changes in land use patterns along the road corridor is experiencing rapid development, it is evidenced by the increased activity and physical growth of the city. The conditions were observed with the growth of new activities such as residential, commercial district and other commercial areas. So that it will affect land use patterns, activities systems and people and goods mobility patterns that occur, which in turn will affect the characteristics of the spatial structure of the development of IKK Gemolong formed as a town in Sragen. The focus of discussion such as land use, population activity systems, as well as the people and goods mobility which the influencing factors of the formation of the spatial structure of a city. The study is considered important because as the basis for consideration in the development of towns in the future. This is because the policy of urban development continues in administrative and sectoral nature, so the presence of the regional autonomy policy of development with regional and integrated system and assessed more quickly to implement. This study used quantitative an quantitative study method. The analysis results indicated the characteristics of land use in Gemolong dominated by settlements, while the commercial district developed along the main streets of this town because Gemolong have function as service centers for its surrounding areas. The residents of Gemolong mostly have work in the non-agricultural sectors, such as trade and services, while the population as a farmer is relatively small, so that these conditions indicated that Gemolong says as urban area. The people mobility in Gemolong originated from both internal and external area of the town in destination location of commercial areas to have studying, working, shopping and other purposes. The residents of Gemolong do not have to big cities to access the daily life necessities for since it is already available in Gemolong. Based on the phenomenon of Gemolong have a compact city type of development, while the structure of urban spaces that were formed have view more functioning of each of the regions even though the condition is still occurring mixture of functions. Then, the structure of urban spaces is the type of sector, although not as ideal as yet which happened in developed countries.</p>

Abstract The rapid development of urban areas in general has a negative impact on built environmental. The decrease of green open space is cause by increasing the need of space for human activity. The reduced area of green open space in Denpasar City, especially in private green open space in the Kesiman Kertalangu area, causes environmental quality to decline. Reducing the area of green open space can cause urban problems, such as increasing city air temperatures. Therefore, it is important to know the role of private green open space in residential yards for increasing thermal comfort in the Kesiman Kertalangu area. For this study the method used is a qualitative research method with a descriptive case study approach. The aim of this study is to determine the role of private green open space in residential yards in term of thermal comfort. The results show that in residential yards that have relatively large areas of land, the existing private green open space conditions are quite optimal. However, in residential yards that have limited land area, the availability of green open space is very minimal. The existence of private green open space in residential yards at the Kesiman Kertalangu area in general is not able to work optimally in reducing temperatures to create a suitable thermal comfort for the environment.

Background. The enrichment of lead (Pb) in a rapidly expanding urban environment is largely caused by industrial and anthropogenic activities. However, very few studies have come from sub-Sahara Africa as a whole, in spite of the increased rate of population, industrialization and urbanization in this region. The city of Onitsha is the commercial heartland of southeast Nigeria. Objectives. To determine the concentration of Pb in soils and sediments in Onitsha and the surrounding area and to identify the possible sources of Pb content in the environmental media. Methods. One hundred and sixty-two (162) samples (120 top and subsoils, and 42 stream and side drain sediments) were collected from the city of Onitsha, Nigeria to determine Pb concentrations, identify the main sources of Pb in this region, and determine its fate in soil and sediments using Pb isotopes. Thirty (30) 15 g clay fractions of soil and sediment samples, and a sample each of galena (from the Lower Benue Trough), coal and soot from vehicle exhaust and battery cells were collected from the city and analyzed for lead isotopes (Pb204, Pb206, Pb207 and Pb208) using ultra-trace inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. Results. The distribution and concentration of Pb in the soil of Onitsha was observed to be influenced by land use patterns with very elevated concentrations of Pb observed for mechanic and metal workshop samples (1444.3, 1067.5, 1048.1, 1730.5 and 580.5 ppm); active waste dump samples (448.4 and 311.9 ppm); and farmland and garden samples (366.2 ppm). The concentration of Pb in the sediments also showed varying elevated concentrations across locations, ranging from 45.7–540.1 ppm. A comparison with the control samples revealed that the Pb concentrations measured in the environmental media were several folds higher than that of the control. The Pb isotope analysis indicated that most of the Pb in environmental media was anthropogenic in origin and had been predominantly contributed by unsustainable environmental practices such as indiscriminate waste dumps, hydrocarbonbased products emissions, by-products from mechanical workshops that have been haphazardly constructed in the city, and industrial plants located within urban areas. Conclusions. The relatively higher concentrations of Pb in soils and sediments were found to be influenced by land use, as also observed in the Pb isotope readings, which will, over time, adversely affect environmental media and biota.
