Water velocities and shear stresses have been determined for a laminar boundary layer of a progressive wave travelling over a regular series of ripples. The Lavrentiev variational method was used to transform conformally the water area with ripples into a strip with flat bottom, while the Lin approach permitted solution of the boundary layer equation. The theoretical prediction of the bed friction was verified experimentally with a new mechanical apparatus. By coupling the theoretical shear stress at the rippled bed with laboratory data for ripple parameters one can expose the friction conditions that control the growth and decay of ripples. If waves develop higher values of shear stress, the rippled bed becomes gradually washed out. Eor known shear stresses, basing on the Erijlink-Bijker formula one can compute sediment transport rates. In the respective diagram, a curve of s.t. rate versus bottom friction consists of two branches. The stages of the growth and decay of ripples are reflected in the lower and upper branches of the curve. For identical ripple height there are two values of s.t. rate , for two different wave intensities, likely to differ by as much as 25 per cent. Three-dimensional ripples have been analyzed with regard to bed friction and compared with two-dimensional conditions.

Hot-wire measurements of second- and third-order mean products of velocity fluctuations have been made in the flow behind a backward-facing step with a thin, laminar boundary layer at the top of the step. Measurements extend to a distance of about 12 step heights downstream of the step, and include parts of the recirculating-flow region: approximate limits of validity of hot-wire results are given. The Reynolds number based on step height is about 105, the mixing layer being fully turbulent (fully three-dimensional eddies) well before reattachment, and fairly close to self-preservation in contrast to the results of some previous workers. Rapid changes in turbulence quantities occur in the reattachment region: Reynolds shear stress and triple products decrease spectacularly, mainly because of the confinement of the large eddies by the solid surface. The terms in the turbulent energy and shear stress balances also change rapidly but are still far from the self-preserving boundary-layer state even at the end of the measurement region.

Using a data correlation for the wall stress associated with very rough boundaries and a semi-empirical calculation method, the shape of boundary layers in exact equilibrium with the roughness beneath them is calculated. A wide range of roughness geometries (two- and three-dimensional elements) is included by the use of equivalent surfaces of equal drag per unit area. Results can be summarized in a single figure which relates the shape factor of the boundary layer (its exponent if it has a power law velocity profile) to the height of the roughness elements and their spacing. New data for one turbulent boundary layer developing over a long fetch of uniform roughness is presented. Wall shear stress, measured directly from a drag plate is combined with boundary layer integral properties to show that the shear stress correlation adopted is reasonably accurate and that the boundary layer is close to equilibrium after passing over a streamwise roughness fetch equal to about 350 times the roughness element height. An example is given of the way in which roughness geometry may be chosen from calculated equilibrium results, for one particular boundary layer thickness and a shape useful for simulating strong atmospheric winds in a wind tunnel.

One of the major concerns affecting the safety of bridges with foundation supports in river-beds is the scouring of river-bed material from bridge supports during floods. Scour is the engineering term for the erosion caused by water around bridge elements such as piers, monopiles, or abutments. Scour holes around a monopile can jeopardize the stability of the whole structure and will require deeper piling or local armoring of the river-bed. About 500,000 bridges in the National Bridge Registry are over waterways. Many of these are considered as vulnerable to scour, about five percent are classified as scour critical, and over the last 30 years bridge failures caused by foundation scour have averaged about one every two weeks. Therefore it is of great importance to predict the correct scour development for a given bridge and flood conditions. Apart from saving time and money, integrity of bridges are important in ensuring public safety. Recent advances in computing boundary motion in combination with mesh morphing to maintain mesh quality in computational fluid dynamic analysis can be applied to predict the scour hole development, analyze the local scour phenomenon, and predict the scour hole shape and size around a pier. The main objective of the present study was to develop and implement a three dimensional iterative procedure to predict the scour hole formation around a cylindrical pier using the mesh morphing capabilities in the STARCCM+ commercial CFD code. A computational methodology has been developed using Python and Java Macros and implemented using a Bash script on a LINUX high performance computer cluster. An implicit unsteady approach was used to obtain the bed shear stresses. The mesh was iteratively deformed towards the equilibrium scour position based on the excess shear stress above the critical shear stress (supercritical shear stress). The model solves the flow field using Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, and the standard k–ε turbulence model. The iterative process involves stretching (morphing) a meshed domain after every time step, away from the bottom where scouring flow parameters are supercritical, and remeshing the relevant computational domain after a certain number of time steps when the morphed mesh compromises the stability of further simulation. The simulation model was validated by comparing results with limited experimental data available in the literature.

Abstract This work examines the steady three-dimensional forced convective thermal boundary-layer flow of laminar and incompressible fluid in a porous medium. In this analysis, it is assumed that the solid phase and the fluid phase, which is immersed in a porous medium are subjected to local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) conditions, which essentially leads to one thermal boundary-layer equation for each phase. Suitable similarity transformations are introduced to reduce the boundary-layer equations into system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are analyzed numerically using an implicit finite difference-based Keller-box method. The numerical results are further confirmed by the asymptotic solution of the same system for large three-dimensionality parameter, and the corresponding results agree well. Our results show that the thickness of boundary layer is always thinner for all permeability parameters tested when compared to the nonporous case. Also, it is noticed that the temperature of solid phase is found to be higher than the corresponding fluid phase for any set of parameters. There is a visible temperature difference in the two phases when the microscopic interphase rate is quite large. The physical hydrodynamics to these parameters is studied in some detail.

Breaking wave-induced scour is recognized as one of the major causes of coastal erosion and offshore structure failure, which involves in the full 3D water-air-sand interaction, raising a great challenge for the numerical simulation. To better understand this process, a nonlinear 3D numerical model based on the open-source CFD platform OpenFOAM® was self-developed in this study. The Navier–Stokes equations were used to compute the two-phase incompressible flow, combining with the finite volume method (FVM) to discretize calculation domain, a modified VOF method to track the free surface, and a k−ε model to closure the turbulence. The nearshore sediment transport process is reproduced in view of shear stress, suspended load, and bed load, in which the terms of shear stress and suspended load were updated by introducing volume fraction. The seabed morphology is updated based on Exner equation and implemented by dynamic mesh technique. The mass conservative sand slide algorithm was employed to avoid the incredible vary of the bed mesh. Importantly, a two-way coupling method connecting the hydrodynamic module with the beach morphodynamic module is implemented at each computation step to ensure the fluid-sediment interaction. The capabilities of this model were calibrated by laboratory data from some published references, and the advantages/disadvantages, as well as proper recommendations, were introduced. Finally, nonbreaking- and breaking wave-induced scour around the monopile, as well as breaking wave-induced beach evolution, were reproduced and discussed. This study would be significantly helpful to understand and evaluate the nearshore sediment transport.

Numerous approaches in sediment mobility studies highlighted the key meaning of channel roughness, which results not only from bed material granulation but also from various bed forms presence, caused by continuous sediment transport. Those forms are strictly connected with the intensity of particle transport, and they eventuate from bed shear stress. The present paper comprised of local scours geometric dimensions research in three variants of lengthwise development of laboratory flume in various hydraulic properties, both in “clear-water” and “live-bed” conditions of sediment movement. Lots of measurements of the bed conformation were executed using the LiDAR device, marked by a very precise three-dimensional shape description. The influence of the bed shear stress downstream model on scours hole dimensions of water structure was investigated as one of the key factors that impact the sediment transport intensity. A significant database of 39 experimental series, lasting averagely 8 hours, was a foundation for delineating functional correlations between bed shear stress-and-critical shear stress ratio and geometry properties of local scours in various flume development cases. In the scope of mutual influence of bed shear stress and water depth, high correlation coefficients were attained, indicating very good and good functional correlations. Also, the influence of bed shear stress and the total length of the scour demonstrated a high correlation coefficient.

Techniques available to practicing civil engineers for numerically modelling cohesive mud in rivers and estuaries are reviewed. Coupled models, treating water and sediment as a single process, remain research tools but are usually not three-dimensional. The decoupled approach, which separates water and sediment computations at each model time step, allows the three-dimensional representation of at least the bed and the use of well-proven, commercial, numerical, hydrodynamic models. Most hydrodynamic models compute sediment transport in suspension but may require modification of the dispersion coefficients to account for the presence of sediment. The sediment model deals with the sediment exchange between the water column and the bed using existing equations for erosion and deposition. Both equations relate the sediment exchange rates to the shear stress in the bottom boundary layer. In real rivers and estuaries, a depositional bed layer is associated with a period of low flow and shear, at slack tide for example, whereas in numerical models a layer is defined by the model time step. The sediment model keeps track of the uppermost layers at each model grid point, including consolidation and strengthening. Although numerical hydrodynamic models are based strongly on physics, sediment models are only numerical frameworks for interpolating and extrapolating full-scale field or laboratory measurements of "hydraulic sediment parameters," such as threshold shear stresses. Calibration and verification of models against measurement are therefore of prime importance.Key words: cohesive sediment, mathematical modelling, settling velocity, erosion, resuspension, deposition, fluid mud, bed layers.

The boundary layer flow determines the bottom shear stresses, which is key point for sediment transport and thereby the evolution of coastal morphology. The structure of the bottom boundary layer in coastal seas has been of interest to oceanographers for many years. In the paper Acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) technique is applied to measure the bottom boundary layer under cnoidal waves in a laboratory flume with 40-m-long, 0.5-m-wide, and 0.8-m-deep.. Based on the high frequency turbulence signal collected, statistic parameters of cnoidal wave flow are calculated, compared and analyzed. The turbulent structure over plain bed and sand ripples bed are carefully studied. The turbulence intensity of near-bed velocities changes along depth of several phases in a period is analyzed. Turbulent Kinetic Energy Method (TKE Method) is used to estimate near-bed shear stress on flat and slope.

Unique, simultaneous direct measurements of the magnitude and direction of the local wall shear stress in a pressure-driven three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer are presented. The flow is also described with an oil streak wall flow pattern, a map of the wall shear stress-wall pressure gradient orientations, a comparison of the wall shear stress directions relative to the directions of the nearest wall velocity as measured with a typical, small boundary layer directionally sensitive claw probe, as well as limiting wall streamline directions from the oil streak patterns, and a comparison of the freestream streamlines and the wall flow streamlines. A review of corrections for direct force sensing shear meters for two-dimensional flows is presented with a brief discussion of their applicability to three-dimensional devices.
