PurposeThis paper aims to explore the construction of social imaginaries of fear by the Chilean press regarding student violence during the 1968 university reforming process. Using an approach inspired by the history of emotions, the primary purpose is to analyze the discourse of two relevant conservative newspapers with national circulation about students' mobilization.Design/methodology/approachThe research rests on the analysis of content in the discourse of the two more representative right-wing Chilean newspapers (El Mercurio and El Diario Ilustrado). Founded in the early years of the 20th century, both had national circulations and were a part of a tradition in the history of the Chilean 20th-century national press. Through the analysis of a selection of editorials and news regarding students' mobilization during 1968, with a focus on the experience of the most prominent institution (Universidad de Chile), this research highlights similarities and differences in the ways that both media endeavoured to elaborate social imaginaries of menace and fear regarding student movements.FindingsThrough the study of the discourse of traditional newspapers, it is possible to identify critical issues concerning the university student movements' purposes to implement breaking (and occasionally violent) methods to carry out the reforms that they promoted, according to the right-wing press. Against this backdrop, the different importance of an anti-communist component is discernible, typical of the Cold War period, in the (political and emotional) arguments of the newspapers under analysis.Originality/valueThis article proposes an interpretation that intertwines a local phenomenon (the reformist movement of the University of Chile) with a global one (the May student revolution of 1968). It also establishes a novel approach by linking, through its approach, yet traditional concepts of social and cultural analysis (the idea of social imaginaries) with a new emphasis on social science and humanities (emotional dimensions).

One psychological impact experienced by women victims of violence in courtship depression. This study aims to reduce the symptoms of depression by using Empathic Love Therapy. This research uses a quasi-experiment with one group pretest-posttest design model. Three women aged 21-23 years, experiencing severe depression based on Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) participated in eight therapy sessions. The results of quantitative analysis with the Friedman Test showed that there were differences in depression scores before treatment, after treatment and after the follow-up process. This result is supported by the average value of depression which decreases from before treatment, after treatment and after the follow-up process. Besides, Empathic Love Therapy has also been shown to affect decreasing manifestations of depression both in emotional, cognitive, motivational and physical/vegetative aspects. Meanwhile, the description analysis shows that the Empathic Love Therapy session is effective and useful to help participants identify themselves towards recovery. Therefore, it can be concluded that Empathic Love Therapy is effectively used to reduce the symptoms of depression in female victims of dating violence. Empathic Love Therapy can heal wounds for victims of violence in courtship by fostering empathic love in the participants so that the level of depression decreases.

The sample of the study consisted of (386) students studying at the Hashemite University during the second semester of the academic year 2012/2013. The researcher developed a questionnaire which consisted of (73) items. The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences due to gender and academic year. However, results did not show statistically significant differences due to specialization or grade average. Furthermore, the results indicated that the problem of transportation was considered as the main challenge to the university administration. The need for a transportation policy was seen urgent to reduce university violence. Finally, weak religious and moral beliefs, rigid and traditional teaching methods, and the effect of local, regional, and global media all played a major role in provoking in university violence. The results also indicated that respect for human dignity received the highest average in terms of importance and practice to reduce the phenomenon of university violence.Among the most important recommendations of the current study is working on a solution to the transportation problem and reinforcing the role of the tribe and the religious social values as well as varying and modernizing the university teaching methods and activating the role of the audio-visual and written media to keep pace with the needs of young people.
