Icephobic coatings interest various industries facing icing problems. However, their durability represents a current limitation in real applications. Therefore, understanding the degradation of coatings under various environmental stresses is necessary for further coating development. Here, lubricated icephobic coatings were fabricated using a flame spray method with hybrid feedstock injection. Low-density polyethylene represented the main coating component. Two additives, namely fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil and paraffinic wax, were added to the coating structure to enhance coating icephobicity. Coating properties were characterised, including topography, surface roughness, thermal properties, wettability, and icephobicity. Moreover, their performance was investigated under various environmental stresses, such as repeated icing/deicing cycles, immersion in corrosive media, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. According to the results, all coatings exhibited medium-low ice adhesion, with slightly more stable icephobic behaviour for cottonseed oil-based coatings over the icing/deicing cycles. Surface roughness slightly increased, and wetting performances decreased after the cyclic tests, but chemical changes were not revealed. Moreover, coatings demonstrated good chemical resistance in selected corrosive media, with better performance for paraffin-based coatings. However, a slight decrease in hydrophobicity was detected due to surface structural changes. Finally, paraffin-based coatings showed better resistance under UV irradiation based on carbonyl index and colour change measurements.

The transition metal (Co, Mn, Cu or Zn) doped La2O3 material was prepared by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique. The 2 wt.% Ni catalyst supported on this material was characterized by XRD, N2 physisorption, TPR, H2 chemisorption and TGA, and evaluated by the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The perovskite structure was certainly formed when either Co or Mn was introduced. The Cu can generate the La2CuO4 spinel phase while the Zn showed a mixed phase of La2O3, ZnO and La(OH)3. The Ni/Co-La2O3 catalyst was more active for the DRM because of high amount of active dual sites of Ni and Co metals dispersed on the catalyst surface. The formation of La2O2CO3 during the reaction can inhibit the coke formation. The cooperation of La2O2CO3 and MnO phases in the Ni/Mn-La2O3 catalyst was promotional effect to decrease carbon deposits on the catalyst surface. The partial substitution of Co for Mn with a small content of Mn can enhance the catalytic activity and the product yield. The Ni/Mn0.05Co0.95-La2O3 catalyst showed the highest CH4 conversion, H2 yield and H2/CO ratio. The Mn inserted into the perovskite structure of LaCoO3 was an important player to change oxygen mobility within the crystal lattice to maintain a high performance of the catalyst. AbstractThis investigation aims to study a novel biologically derived coating applied on Ti alloy substrates. Obtained from a low-cost fish bone resource, a nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite has been synthesized and converted to an organic suspension. Coating was then manufactured by a high-velocity suspension flame spray process. The microstructure, phase composition, coating thickness, and roughness of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated samples were studied. The results indicated the presence of both hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate phases and the final coating layer was uniform and dense. In vitro bioactivity and biodegradability of the HA/Ti composite samples were estimated by immersion in simulated body fluid. Remarkable reductions in Ca2+ and PO43− ion concentrations were observed as well as low weight loss percentage and a slight variation in the pH value, indicating the generation of an apatite layer on the surface of all studied samples. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry confirm these results. Thus biological derived HA coatings are a promising candidate to enhance bioactivity and biodegradability of bone implants. To demonstrate feasibility on commercial medical components, a medical screw was coated and evaluated.

In the present study, pulsed laser post-processing was applied to improve the properties of the thermally sprayed NiCrCoFeCBSi/40 wt.% WC coatings. The powder mix was deposited onto a mild steel substrate by flame spray method and then the as-sprayed coatings were processed by Nd:YAG laser. The peak power density applied was between 4.00 × 106 and 5.71 × 106 W/cm2, and the laser operating speed ranged between 100 and 400 mm/min, providing processing in a melting mode. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Knop hardness measurements, and “ball-on-disc” dry friction tests were applied to study the effect of the processing parameters on the geometry of laser pass and microstructure, hardness, and tribology of the processed layers. The results obtained revealed that pulsed laser processing provides a monolithic remelted coating layer with the microstructure of ultrafine, W-rich dendrites in Ni-based matrix, where size and distribution of W-rich dendrites periodically vary across remelted layer depth. The composition of W-rich dendrites can be attributed to a carbide of type (W, Cr, Ni, Fe)C. The cracks sensitivity of coatings was visibly reduced with the reduction of power density applied. The hardness of coatings was between ~1070 and ~1140 HK0.2 and correlated with microstructure size, being dependent on the processing parameters. The friction coefficient and wear rate of coatings during dry sliding were reduced by up to ~30% and up to ~2.4 times, respectively, after laser processing.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to solve the oil drill pipe joints and casing excessive wear problems and to improve the drill pipe joint-casing wear resistance and anti-friction properties. Design/methodology/approach On the surface of the drill pipe joints using oxyacetylene flame bead weld (BW) wear-resistant welding wire ARNCO-100XTTM prepares welding layer, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) Cr3C275-NiCr25 prepares coating and subsonic flame spray and remelt (SFSR) Ni60 prepares coating, then comparing and analyzing the friction and wear of the three types of wear-resistant layers and the casing under the condition of 1.8 g/cm3 mud drilling fluid lubrication. The wear resistance and anti-friction performance of the drill pipe joints were evaluated based on the wear situation, finally revealing its friction and wear mechanisms. Findings Three types of wear-resistant layers can improve the surface wear resistance of drill pipe joints, the wear-resistant layer and the substrate are well combined and the welding layers and coating are both dense and uniform. The wear resistance of the HVOF-Cr3C275-NiCr25 coating is 10.9 times that of the BW-ARNCO-100XTTM weld layer, and the wear resistance of the SFSR-Ni60 weld layer is 2.45 times that of the BW-ARNCO-100XTTM weld layer. The anti-friction properties of SFSR-Ni60 welding layer is the best, followed by HVOF-Cr3C275-NiCr25 coating, and the anti-friction properties of BW-ARNCO-100XTTM welding layer is the worst among the three. Originality/value The research results of this paper have great practical value in the process and material of improving the wear resistance and anti-friction performance of the drill pipe joint casing.
