Abstract A theoretical investigation has been carried out to explore the modulational instability (MI) of electrostatic waves in a warm multi-ion dusty plasma system containing positive ions, negative ions and positively or negatively charged dust in presence of superthermal electrons. With the help of the standard perturbation technique, it is found that the dynamics of the modulated wave is governed by a damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). Regions of MI of the electrostatic wave are precisely determined and the analytical solutions predict the formation of dissipative bright and dark solitons as well as dissipative first- and second-order rogue wave solutions. It is found that the striking features (viz., instability criteria, amplitude and width of rogue waves, etc.) are significantly modified by the effects of relevant plasma parameters such as degree of the electron superthermality, dust density, etc. The time dependent numerical simulations of the damped NLSE reveal that modulated electrostatic waves exhibit breather like structures. Moreover, phase plane analysis has been performed to study the dynamical behaviors of NLSE by using the theory of dynamical system. It is remarked that outcome of present study may provide physical insight into understanding the generation of several types of nonlinear structures in dusty plasma environments, where superthermal electrons, positive and negative ions are accountable (e.g. Saturn’s magnetosphere, auroral zone, etc.).

Abstract Using a dusty plasma ratchet, one can realize the rectification of charged dust particle in a plasma. To obtain the ratchet potential dominating the rectification, here, we perform quantitative simulations based on a two-dimensional fluid model of capacitively coupled plasma. Plasma parameters are firstly calculated in two typical cross sections of the dusty plasma ratchet which cut vertically the saw channel at different azimuthal positions. The balance positions of charged dust particle in the two cross sections then can be found exactly. The electric potentials at the two balance positions have different values. Using interpolation in term of a double-sine function from previous experimental measurement, an asymmetrical ratchet potential along the saw channel is finally obtained. The asymmetrical orientation of the ratchet potential depends on discharge conditions. Quantitative simulations further reproduce our previous experimental phenomena such as the rectification of dust particle in the dusty plasma ratchet.

Abstract A theoretical investigation by an all-inclusive adaptation of the PLK strategy is carried out in order to study the inward and outward interaction between two cylindrical and spherical dust acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in an unmagnetized dusty plasma consisting of nonthermal distributed ions, negatively and positively charged dust grains along with electrons featuring Boltzmann’s distribution. The interactions and collisions between two cylindrical and spherical geometries at different time scales are studied. Also the combined effects of the nonthermality of ions, ion to electron temperature ratio as well as mass ratio of positive to negative dust grains have been studied in detail on the phase shifts raised due to collision. It has been seen that the properties of the cooperation of DASWs in cylindrical and spherical shaped are distinct.

We investigate the influence of charged dust on the incoherent scatter from the D-region ionosphere. Incoherent scatter is observed with high-power, large aperture radars and results from electromagnetic waves scattering at electrons that are coupled to other charged components through plasma oscillations. The influence of charged dust can hence be considered an effect of dusty plasma. The D-region contains meteoric smoke particles that are of nanometre size and form from incoming ablating meteors. Detection of such charged dust in the incoherent scatter spectrum from the D-region has previously been proposed and studied to some degree. We here present model calculations to investigate the influence of the charged dust component with a size distribution, instead of the one size dust components assumed in other works. The developed code to calculate the incoherent scatter spectrum from the D-region including dust particles with different sizes and different positive and negative charge states is made available (https://doi.org/10.18710/GHZIIY). We investigate how sizes, number density and charge state of the dust influence the spectrum during different ionospheric conditions. We consider the ionospheric parameters for the location of the EISCAT VHF radar during a year and find that conditions are most suitable for dust detection in winter below 80 km at times with increased electron densities. The prospects to derive dust parameters increase, when the incoherent scatter observations are combined with those of other instruments to provide independent information on electron density, neutral density and temperature.

<p>Recent studies have shown that negatively charged dust dramatically alters the electric properties of plasmas, in particular planetary ionospheres. Utilizing Titan flybys from the entire Cassini mission and full plasma content of the moon’s ionosphere (electrons, positive ions and negative ions/dust grains) we derive the electric conductivities and currents, updating and extending previous results which did not include the charged dust and focused on a limited range of flybys.</p> <p>Compared to the previous estimates, using the full plasma content increases the Pedersen conductivities by a factor ~2 and Hall conductivities by a factor ~1.2. We identify dusty plasma as the reason for the sharp increase of Pedersen conductivity below 1000 km altitude reported previously. Using the full range of Titan flybys also reveals the conductivities on the dayside to be factor ~7-9 larger than on the nightside, owing to higher dayside plasma densities as well as generally heavier plasma species on the nightside.</p>

The formation of a 1D chain-like structure of dust particles in a low-temperature argon plasma was studied. A new numerical model for calculation of the self-consistent spatial distribution of plasma parameters around a chain of dust particles was presented. The model described the motion of positively charged ions in the electric potential of several negatively charged dust particles, taking into account the action of an external electric field. The main advantage of the model was that the charges of the dust particles and the interparticle distances were determined self-consistently. As a result of numerical simulations, the dependencies of the spatial distributions of the plasma parameters (the densities of electrons and ions and the self-consistent electric potential) near the dust particles chain on the strength of the external electric field, an external force acted on the last particle, and the mean free path of the ions was determined. The obtained results made it possible to describe the process of the formation of chain-like structures of dust particles in discharge plasma.

The standard nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) is one of the elegant equations to find detailed information about the modulational instability criteria of dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) waves and associated DIA rogue waves (DIARWs) in a three-component dusty plasma medium with inertialess super-thermal kappa distributed electrons, and inertial warm positive ions and negative dust grains. It can be seen that the plasma system supports both fast and slow DIA modes under consideration of inertial warm ions along with inertial negatively charged dust grains. It is also found that the modulationally stable parametric regime decreases with κ. The numerical analysis has also shown that the amplitude of the first and second-order DIARWs decreases with ion temperature. These results are to be considered the cornerstone for explaining the real puzzles in space and laboratory dusty plasmas.
