The results of numerical simulation of unsteady free convection developing near a suddenly heated plate, on which protrusions in the form of adiabatic cylinders of double height with respect to the diameter are arranged in a checkerboard pattern, are presented. The calculations were performed according to the Reynolds equations using a differential model of turbulent stresses. The range of variation of the Grashof number (plotted according to the thickness of the free convective flow), in which a significant intensification of heat transfer can be achieved, has been determined. It is shown that the best conditions for intensification are created if the longitudinal pitch in the array of protrusions is approximately twenty times the diameter of the latter.

By taking Beijing as the case site, using open-source Point of Interest data, and employing spatial visualization techniques, this study explores the spatial structural characteristics of the Beijing tourism and leisure industry and its sub-sectors. It has been found that (1) the nearest neighbor indexes of the tourism and leisure industry and its sub-sectors are all less than 1, indicating that the tourism and leisure industry and its sub-sectors in Beijing exhibit a spatial clustering distribution. Scenic spots have the largest R-value of 0.52 and, thus, the lowest degree of clustering. The minimum R-value of 0.15 is found in catering, marking the highest degree of clustering in the industry; (2) the main directional trend of the tourism and leisure industry and its sub-sectors in Beijing is the “northeast-southwest” direction, the south-north directional dispersion is dominant, and scenic spots demonstrate a more noticeable trend of spatial dispersion; (3) within the area from Sanlitun Street in the north to Panjiayuan Street in the south, and from Chaoyangmen Street in the west to Liulitun Street in the east, is situated the largest portion of cluster centers with the highest degree of clustering in Beijing’s tourism and leisure industry. The contiguous high-density cluster center of catering starts from Sanlitun Street in the north to Jinsong Street in the south, and from Chaoyangmen Street in the west to Liulitun Street in the east. The cluster of shopping and entertainment shows a checkerboard pattern in the CZCF and NUDZ. The high-value cluster of accommodation occurs primarily around Sanlitun, Panjiayuan, and Qianmen; (4) the distribution of three grades of hot spot areas and non-significant areas of tourism and leisure, catering, accommodation, and shopping and entertainment in Beijing demonstrates a circular pattern that centers around the CZCF and expands outward in sequence. High-value hot spot streets for this area are dominated by Beixinqiao Street, Hepingli Street, Sanlitun Street, Heping Street, and Tuanjiehu Street; and the high-value cold spot streets of the area are chiefly in Fuzizhuang Township, Wangping Town, Miaofeng Mountain Town, and Tanzhesi Town.

Abstract Background and aim In the past, increased latencies of the blue-on-yellow pattern visually evoked potentials (BY-VEP), which predominantly originate in the koniocellular pathway, have proven to be a sensitive biomarker for early glaucoma. However, a complex experimental setup based on an optical bench was necessary to obtain these measurements because computer screens lack sufficient temporal, spatial, spectral, and luminance resolution. Here, we evaluated the diagnostic value of a novel setup based on a commercially available video projector. Methods BY-VEPs were recorded in 126 participants (42 healthy control participants, 12 patients with ocular hypertension, 17 with “preperimetric” glaucoma, and 55 with perimetric glaucoma). Stimuli were created with a video projector (DLP technology) by rear projection of a blue checkerboard pattern (460 nm) for 200 ms (onset) superimposed on a bright yellow background (574 nm), followed by an offset interval where only the background was active. Thus, predominantly S-cones were stimulated while L- and M-cone responses were suppressed by light adaptation. Times of stimulus onset to VEP onset-trough (N-peak time) and offset-peak (P-peak time) were analyzed after age-correction based on linear regression in the normal participants. Results The resulting BY-VEPs were quite similar to those obtained in the past with the optical bench: pattern-onset generated a negative deflection of the VEP, whereas the offset-response was dominated by a positive component. N-peak times were significantly increased in glaucoma patients (preperimetric 136.1 ± 10 ms, p < 0.05; perimetric 153.1 ± 17.8 ms, p < 0.001) compared with normal participants (123.6 ± 7.7 ms). Furthermore, they were significantly correlated with disease severity as determined by visual field losses retinal nerve fiber thinning (Spearman R = –0.7, p < 0.001). Conclusions Video projectors can be used to create optical stimuli with high temporal and spatial resolution, thus potentially enabling sophisticated electrophysiological measurements in clinical practice. BY-VEPs based on such a projector had a high diagnostic value for detection of early glaucoma. We analyzed the waxing and waning patterns ('surges') of reported SARS-CoV-2 cases from January 1, 2020 through Oct 31, 2021 in all states and provinces (n = 93) in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, and across all counties (N = 3142) in the USA. A correlation matrix of the 576 x 576 daily case incidence rates in the 50 US states generates a distinctive 'checkerboard' pattern showing that the epidemic has consisted of seven distinct internally coherent spatiotemporal wave patterns, four in the first year of the epidemic, and three thus far in the second year. Geoclustering of state case rate trajectories reveals three dominant co-varying spatial clusters of similar case rate trajectories, in the northeastern, southeastern and central/western regions of the USA. The spatiotemporal patterns of epidemic year 1 have thus far been repeated (p<.001) in epidemic year 2. The 'checkerboard' pattern of the correlation matrix of case trajectories can be closely simulated as three sets of interacting sine waves with annual frequencies of 1:1:2 major cycles per year, corresponding to the northeastern, central/western, and southeastern state clusters. Case incidence patterns in Mexico and Canada have been similar to nearby regions in the southern US and the northern US, respectively. Time lapse videos allow visualization of the wave patterns. These highly structured geographical and temporal patterns, coupled with emerging evidence of annual repetition of these same patterns, show that SARS-CoV-2 case rates are driven at least in part by predictable seasonal factors.

ObjectiveStimulus-selective response modulation (SRM) of sensory evoked potentials represents a well-established non-invasive index of long-term potentiation-like (LTP-like) synaptic plasticity in the human sensory cortices. Although our understanding of the mechanisms underlying stimulus-SRM has increased over the past two decades, it remains unclear how this form of LTP-like synaptic plasticity is related to other basic learning mechanisms, such as perceptual learning. The aim of the current study was twofold; firstly, we aimed to corroborate former stimulus-SRM studies, demonstrating modulation of visual evoked potential (VEP) components following high-frequency visual stimulation. Secondly, we aimed to investigate the association between the magnitudes of LTP-like plasticity and visual perceptual learning (VPL).Methods42 healthy adults participated in the study. EEG data was recorded during a standard high-frequency stimulus-SRM paradigm. Amplitude values were measured from the peaks of visual components C1, P1, and N1. Embedded in the same experimental session, the VPL task required the participants to discriminate between a masked checkerboard pattern and a visual “noise” stimulus before, during and after the stimulus-SRM probes.ResultsWe demonstrated significant amplitude modulations of VEPs components C1 and N1 from baseline to both post-stimulation probes. In the VPL task, we observed a significant change in the average threshold levels from the first to the second round. No significant association between the magnitudes of LTP-like plasticity and performance on the VPL task was evident.ConclusionTo the extent of our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the relationship between the visual stimulus-RM phenomenon and VPL in humans. In accordance with previous studies, we demonstrated robust amplitude modulations of the C1 and N1 components of the VEP waveform. However, we did not observe any significant correlations between modulation magnitude of VEP components and VPL task performance, suggesting that these phenomena rely on separate learning mechanisms implemented by different neural mechanisms.

&lt;p&gt;The Lagrangian dispersion model FLEXPART v10.4 uses cloud water content, temperature, and precipitation rates to calculate wet scavenging. Currently, only precipitation fields are interpolated spatially to the particle positions. A simple nearest-neighbour approach is used for cloud parameters and temperature. This is made worse by the fact that precipitation fields from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are temporal integrals whereas all the other parameters refer to a specific time. The pre-processor flex_extract disaggregates the precipitation fields to construct point values that can preserve the integral quantity when interpolated in FLEXPART. However, this method does not preserve precipitation in each time interval, leading to smoothing, or even shifting precipitation into dry periods.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We have implemented interpolation of all fields relevant for wet scavenging in FLEXPART v10.4 as well as the option to use our improved precipitation disaggregation scheme (https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-11-2503-2018). It introduces two additional subgrid points within one original time interval. This secures consistency, continuity and mass conservation of precipitation within each time interval.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These updates lead to a massive improvement of the wet deposition fields in a specific test case where we applied a high-resolution outgrid that makes the effects of interpolation issues more visible. Originally, a kind of checkerboard pattern was visible, as well as a banded structure due to the finite time interval between meteorological input fields. Both features are mostly eliminated now. Additionally, the influence of varying the temporal and spatial resolution of the ECMWF input fields was investigated, and the benefit of using the ECMWF cloud water content instead of parametrised values. We also look at the impact of the new version on other, previously used test cases, for example, a lifetime analysis of aerosol particles as well as transport of mineral dust and black carbon.&lt;/p&gt;

A heat-insulating tile consisting of a back, side and front wall made of extruded expanded polystyrene and a polymer-sand mixture has been developed. Inside there are two unventilated air layers, separated by a heat-reflecting screen. In order to exclude cold bridges, the thermal insulation tile is made of two parts, offset in the horizontal direction. Fixing of tiles among themselves is carried out by means of occurrence of ledges on the top face of one tile with hollows on the bottom face of another. This type of joining plates ensures the absence of cold bridges and facilitates their installation. The problem is solved by the fact that in the facade thermal insulation panel containing the front, rear walls, side faces and locking elements in the form of protrusions and recesses arranged in a checkerboard pattern, and made with the possibility of mounting, the front and rear walls form a frame with a cavity , filled with insulating material, characterized in that the locking elements are placed on the front faces of the frame. Shielded layers of air are used as heat-insulating material. The frame of the panel is made of polymer-sand material, and for its fastening use an adhesive solution. This is achieved by making a panel of polymer-sand frame, in the middle of which there are shielded air layers, which provide resistance to heat transfer and infrared radiation of the material.

The article examines the structures of the Zolotarevka fortified settlement (a medieval fortress in the upper reaches of the Sura River, Penza region), both from the points of view of building technologies and of spatial analysis. The zones of residential buildings and zones of economic and industrial structures were identified. The buildings themselves were located chaotically along the territory of the fortified settlement but were tied to internal roads. The average size of residential buildings was 4×3 m, and the economic – 2×2 m. Usually the pockets for cooking were located next to the side and fenced with wattle. Among the features two long structures (barracks) with a rammed platform between them may be singled out. The study of these materials also made it possible to identify the traditions of Ancient Russia and Volga Bulgaria. Particular attention is paid by the authors to the defensive structures that were formed over the years from 10th to 13th centuries and retain a number of unique elements. First of all, these were trapping pits located in a checkerboard pattern on the floor side of the settlement as well as coating the ditch with clay and internal paths along the rampart. To summarize, these facts make the Zolotarevka fortified settlement a reference monument of the medieval history of Eastern Europe.
