The connectivity of a region is an indicator the growth of service centers. Community service is carried out with a team from PT. Maluku and North Maluku Regional Development Bank Central Maluku Branch during 2018. Data were collected in 18 districts in Central Maluku Regency through the Rapid Survey Method for regional potential and socio-economic dynamics of the community. Central Maluku Regency BPS data support 2018 is a complementary input in the centrality analysis. The data were processed using quantitative descriptive analysis using Guttman scale/Marshall Centrality Index and spatial analysis tools using ArcmapGIS 10.3.1 software, to obtain a map of the regional service center. Central Maluku Regency is an archipelago, having district clusters spread over Seram Island, Ambon, Lease Islands and Banda. The district cluster is divided into 4 regions with the highest level of regional service being in Amahei District (11.14) and the lowest in Nusa Laut (2.50). Economic growth in sub-districts in the archipelago experienced a positive trend, concentrated on Ambon Island and Banda Islands, while the Lease Islands centrality index was in the lower middle category.

Critical scholarship views corporate accumulation – a fundamental driver of capitalism – as inherently dispossessive, involving violence and expropriation. However, dispossession also involves practices of legitimation that are related to coercive violence in complex ways. We examine the roles of dispossession and legitimation practices as constitutive of corporate accumulation. Specifically, we analyze how dispossession is connected to the appropriation of legitimacy as a symbolic resource which justifies and enables violence and expropriation. Taking an historical perspective, we examine a paradigmatic case of corporate accumulation: the Dutch East India Company’s monopolization of spices on the Banda islands (1599-1621). In this process, the Dutch moved from 1) initial instances of legitimation to 2) legitimation to enforce Dutch-Bandanese agreements, to 3) legitimation to enable dispossession of the Bandanese, to finally 4) wholesale dispossession of the Bandanese. These four phases reflect a mechanism that we call ‘civilized dispossession’, which describes the escalating three-way interplay between Dutch practices of dispossession and legitimation and Bandanese resistance, and which was driven by institutional experimentation and multi-level institutional work. Integrating institutional and critical perspectives, the notion of ‘civilized dispossession’ provides a novel theorization of corporate accumulation, elucidating the mechanisms by which corporations promote the diffusion of capitalism.

Abstract. Simanjorang TM, Irham, Waluyati LR, Mulyo JH. 2020. Comparative and competitive advantages of nutmeg farming in two regions in Maluku Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21:  1165-1173. Comparative and competitive advantage is one of the main keys to the development of nutmeg farming in Maluku Province to deal with globalization and market liberalization. Consequently, assessments are needed in developing efforts to improve the comparative and competitive advantage of nutmeg farming. The purposes of this study are to find out the private and social benefits of nutmeg farming, to find out the comparative and competitive advantages of nutmeg farming, and to compare the level of competitiveness of small-scale nutmeg farming in two regions in Maluku Province, Indonesia, namely the Ambon Island region and the Banda Islands region. Data were collected using direct interview techniques to smallholder nutmeg farmers selected purposively. The data was then analyzed using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) and the t-independent test of difference. The results show that nutmeg farming in the Banda Islands region has higher private and social benefits than in the Ambon Island region, because the nutmeg farming system in Banda Islands region is carried out intensively and the price of nutmeg farms received by farmers is higher, The competitive and comparative advantage of nutmeg farming in the Banda Islands region is higher than in the Ambon Island region. All these results suggest that in general nutmeg farming in the Banda Islands region is more competitive than in the Ambon Island region.

Banda Islands is located in the eastern part of Indonesia. These islands are rich in coral reefs and fish. This archipelago has been designated by the Indonesian Government as a tourist area. However, the Banda Islands are facing several economic, social and environmental problems. This study aims to provide policy input to local governments in the form of a strategic plan to develop the Banda Islands as ecotourism and environmental conservation. The method used is “Ecotourism Opportunity Spectrum” (ECOS) and the “Conservation Measures Partnership" (CMP) model. The results of this study produce five strategic plans: a) The first priority is to create a working forum; b) the second is the integration of tasks between the parties involved; c) the third priority is the regulation for changes in coastal land; d) fourth priority is mapping of fishing and; e) the fifth priority is alternative livelihoods.

Nutmeg plantations in the Banda Islands, Central Maluku, had an important value in the early history of industrial development in Indonesia. The operational management of planting, maintaining, picking, processing, distribution and exercising power are some lessons learned. Plantations at that time also required various forms of human resource management, ranging from recruitment, division of labor, supervision and discipline of its workers. In this case the material culture reflects the mindset of the builders and managers of the time. Through descriptive qualitative methods, disciplinary problems related to the management of the nutmeg plantations are discussed by linking the concepts of technofact, sociofacts, ideofacts in archeology with the concept of panopticon as a disciplinary model proposed by Foucault. The goal is to explore the values that can be applied to the present from the remnants associated with the nutmeg plantations of the Banda Islands. The results obtained are related to the discipline model with archeological remains related to the management of nutmeg plantations. The concept of panopticon is still relevant today, with necessary modifications in the form of cultural products, and adjustments in the development of technology and information.
