Estuaries, where fresh and salty water converge, provide abundant nutrients for ichthyoplankton. Ichthyoplankton, including fish eggs, larvae, and juveniles, are important fishery recruitment resources. The Yangtze Estuary and its adjacent waters comprise a typical large-scale estuary and supply many important fish spawning, feeding, and breeding areas. In this study, 1,291 ichthyoplankton individuals were collected in the Yangtze Estuary in spring, from 2013 to 2020. The aims of the study were to provide detailed information on characteristics of the ichthyoplankton assemblage, explore interannual variation, and evaluate the effects of environmental variables on the temporal variation in assemblage structure. Twenty-six species in seventeen families were identified. The dominant species were Coilia mystus, Chelidonichthys spinosus, Engraulis japonicus, Hypoatherina valenciennei, Larimichthys polyactis, Salanx ariakensis, Stolephorus commersonnii, and Trachidermus fasciatus. The ichthyoplankton assemblage changed significantly over time, and Chelidonichthys spinosus became one of the dominant species. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature and chlorophyll a were the key factors affecting the assemblage structure in the Yangtze Estuary in spring.

The predicted sequence for thousands of genes revealed by a preliminary low-coverage genome assembly is presented for Brycon orbignyanus, an endangered migratory fish. Neotropical migratory fish stocks have been drastically reduced due to accumulated environmental pressure. Brycon orbignyanus, once one of the main fisheries species in the Platine Basin, is now very rare in nature and relies on spawning programs and a few well preserved or still untouched sites. The use of high-throughput DNA sequencing is still untapped regarding the functional genome information from B. orbignyanus. In order to help bridging this gap, we present a dataset resulting from the first functional annotation from a de novo genome assembly for B. orbignyanus, from short reads (90 bp), obtained by the HiSeq 2000 platform (Illumina). The annotation was performed for scaffolds over 10 kb using the Maker pipeline, with reference sequences taken from the NCBI for the Characiformes order. This annotation resulted in the prediction of 12,734 genes, classified with the aid of PANTHER. The data presented here can facilitate the development of basic research in this threatened species, along with practical biotechnological tools for different areas, such as commercial and environmental fish spawning operations (e.g. hormonal induction, growth) and human health.

Abstract Oryzias woworae is an endemic ricefish from Muna Island, Southeast Sulawesi, traded as an ornamental fish. Information on the biology of these fish is very lacking, including their reproductive. These fish also face the threat of population decreasing in the wild. The research aimed to examine the spawning behavior and embryonic of O. woworae as the basis for aquaculture. Fish spawning was carried out using 1 male: 1 female ratio, which was repeated three times. The observed spawning behavior was pre-spawning, mating process, egg number, and morphology. Behavioral observations were carried out for five days of spawning. Observation of embryos was carried out to see the stages of embryo development until hatching. The results obtained on pre-spawning behavior were changes in body color and blackened fins in males, which did not occur in female fish. Males actively swim by approaching their dorsal and anal fins while chasing females. The female releases the eggs and is attached to the substrate, rapidly fertilized by the male fish. There is a phenomenon of females carrying eggs on the genital pore before being released to the substrate (non-pelvic brooder). Spawning only occurs during the day, and spawning is getting faster, which is at 09:00 AM on the fifth day. Oryzias woworae eggs have a diameter of 1.3 ± 0.2 mm, equipped with attaching and non-attaching filaments. Observations of O. woworae embryos showed that embryo hatching occurred at seven days 23 hours post-fertilization.

The Ninety East Ridge is a submarine north–south oriented volcanic ridge in the eastern Indian Ocean. Surface-layer ichthyoplankton collected in this area from September to October were identified by combined morphological and molecular (DNA barcoding) techniques, and their species composition, diversity, and abundance, and correlations with environmental variables were described. Collections comprised 109 larvae and 507 eggs, which were identified to 37 taxa in 7 orders, 20 families, and 27 genera, and were dominated by the order Perciformes and species Vinciguerria sp., Oxyporhamphus micropterus, and Decapterus macarellus. Species abundances at each station and of each species were relatively low, suggesting that this area or the time of sampling were not of major importance for fish spawning. Waters above Ninety East Ridge had lower species diversity but higher species richness than waters further offshore. A generalized additive model revealed that high abundance of ichthyoplanktonic taxa occurred in areas with low sea surface height and high sea surface salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration. Of these, sea surface height was most correlated with ichthyoplankton abundance. We provided baseline data on surface-dwelling ichthyoplankton communities in this area to aid in development of pelagic fishery resources in waters around the Ninety East Ridge.

There are presented results of the economic valuation of the habitat service and biodiversity losses caused by the Dniester hydropower complex functioning. Habitat services were evaluated for two bird species (glossy ibis, Plegadis falcinellus, and yellow heron, Ardeola ralloides) and fish spawning grounds. The evaluation of biodiversity services was carried out for the Ramsar sites “Lower Dniester” and “Unguri - Holosnita”. The current cost of discussed losses in the Moldavian part of the Dniester basin is about USD 6.7-7.1 million.

Numerical modeling of braided channels showed no significant differences in the number of cross-sectional branches between different water periods in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. During most of the year (wet, normal and dry periods), flow velocities in the higher-branching (HB) channels were significantly lower than in the other two branching categories, while the overall distribution of depth in the higher-branching channels maintained a high degree of consistency with the moderate-branching channels (MB), which partly explains why the HB channels are important habitats for fish spawning, nursery and baiting (lower flow velocity distribution with a wider range of depth). Based on the examination of the water surface width, the water surface width may not be a limiting factor for fish habitat within braided rivers. Simulation of the hydrodynamic parameters of the fish-spawning grounds revealed that the average cross-sectional flow velocity and water depth fluctuated the least at different flows during the fish-spawning period for the HB channels. By counting the hydraulic parameters of the spawning grounds during the spawning period, it can be seen that the most preferred flow velocity for fish in the braided river in the study section was 0.1-0.4 m/s, and the water depth was 0-1.2 m. This article analyses the characteristics of the hydraulic parameters of the braided river and provides theoretical support for the restoration of fish habitats in braided rivers.

Black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons, is a South America-introduced ornamental fish species that has been widely cultivated in Indonesia. Some farmers breed this fish with different sex ratios, but the optimum sex ratio remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the spawning behavior and reproductive performance of black ghost knifefish with different sex ratios. The treatments in this study were arranged in a completely randomized design consisting of different sex ratios between males and females, namely: A (one male : three females), B (two males : three females), and C (three males : three females). Each treatment was done in triplicate. The broodstock were maintained in an aquarium (80 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm) and fed with bloodworm twice a day. The water was changed every day as much as 60% of the total volume. During the experiment, the parameters of spawning behavior, number of fish spawning, number of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching rate, and daily spawning frequencies were observed. The observation was done for seven days. The study results showed that black ghost knifefish spawned at night (11 pm - 2 am). The mating and spawning occurred between one male and one female. Competition between males was observed in the treatments indicated by aggressive movements of a male toward the others, such as sudden approaching, chasing, and driving away the others. Fish in treatment-B spawned consistently from day-1 to day-5. Fish in treatment-A spawned from day-2 to day-4, while fish in treatment-C spawned only on day-7. The reproductive performance parameters showed no significant difference in all treatments except the hatching rate parameter of treatment-B. The study concludes that better reproductive performance of black ghost knifefish, A. albifrons can be achieved with a spawning ratio of two males and three females. Further research on individual and mass spawning methods with the best spawning ratio of the fish is required.

Low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), widely known as drones, have become ubiquitous and improved considerably in their technical capabilities and data quality. This opens new opportunities for their utilisation in scientific research that can help to reduce equipment and data collection costs. Remote sensing methods in ecological fieldwork can be a suitable approach to complementing, augmenting or even replacing certain aspects of fieldwork. In this study we tested the suitability of UAV for the detection of salmonid spawning grounds in two lakes in Iceland, Thingvallavatn and Ellidavatn. Salmonids are very susceptible to environmental changes, especially during embryonic development when highly oxygenated water flow and low temperatures are required. Monitoring the changes of the redd density over time will help understand the population dynamics of salmonid species and create strategies for species conservation. As part of this pilot study, we conducted aerial surveys during the spawning seasons in both locations in 2018 recording standard photographs in the visible spectrum (red, green, blue) to fully cover the respective areas of interest. Different flight altitudes were recorded to test the effects of image resolution on the final analyses. The images were then processed by applying standard remote sensing analyses in the software ENVI. The maximum likelihood classification combined with post-classification improvement methods resulted in satisfactory accuracies that are valuable for further monitoring efforts. From these findings we established a workflow that allows the implementation of UAV in ecological fieldwork for regular long-term observations. We discuss our experiences with regards to their utility, their limitations and identify future directions of research for implementing the potential that low-cost approaches have in supporting ecological studies of freshwater ecosystems.
