Purpose: The availability of evidence-based therapies for abstract words is limited. Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training (AbSANT) is theoretically motivated and has been shown to not only improve directly trained abstract words, such as the word emergency in the category hospital, but also promote generalization to related concrete words, such as the word doctor . Method: This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions, including cueing strategies, and material resources for conducting AbSANT. Importantly, this tutorial also explains the theoretical motivation behind AbSANT, as well as information regarding the population, dose, and environment characteristics of effective trials, to help clinicians make informed decisions regarding the applicability of this approach and to guide decision-making throughout the steps of therapy. Conclusions: AbSANT is an effective, theoretically based treatment for abstract words. This tutorial provides all of the resources needed to conduct AbSANT with clients with aphasia. The virtue of forgiving others and the virtue of compassion occupy a pivotal position in the core study model because they provide an important point of departure for explaining how spiritual support affects health. This fundamental issue is explored in three sections: (1) a theoretical rationale for focusing specifically on forgiveness and compassion is provided—in the process the social underpinning of these virtues is highlighted; (2) studies on the relationship between forgiveness and health as well as compassion and health are reviewed; (3) a submodel is introduced that aims to flesh out the nature of the relationship between spiritual support and these two social virtues is provided.

The use of control variables to improve inferences about statistical relationships in data is ubiquitous in management research. In both the micro- and macro-subfields of management, control variables are included to remove confounding variance and provide researchers with an enhanced ability to interpret findings. Scholars have explored the theoretical underpinnings and statistical effects of including control variables in a variety of statistical analyses. Further, a robust literature surrounding the best practices for their use and reporting exists. Specifically, researchers have been directed to report more detailed information in manuscripts regarding the theoretical rationale for the use of control variables, their measurement, and their inclusion in statistical analysis. Moreover, recent research indicates the value of removing control variables in many cases. Although there is evidence that articles recommending best practices for control variables use are increasingly being cited, there is also still a lag in researchers following recommendations. Finally, there are avenues for valuable future research on control variables.

The article under discussion reveals the issues of theoretical rationale for content-language integrated learning (CLIL) in educational institutions. The author of the article consider that CLIL as an educational approach serves to maintain linguistic diversity as well as a powerful tool that has a significant impact on the process of learning a foreign language. Moreover, CLIL is an innovative approach to learning, creating a holistic, dynamic and stimulating learning environment. The approach under consideration expands didactic possibilities of the traditional educational curriculum, namely, not to teach each subject separately, but to integrate subjects with others.

This chapter focus on distraction as an intervention for children’s acute medical pain. We start by highlighting the consequences of untreated procedural pain for children. Next, we discuss the theoretical rationale for distraction and its anesthetic qualities. Subsequently, we present the literature examining the effectiveness of distraction for lowering children’s distress associated with immunizations, venous access, burn debridement, and cancer treatments. Then we synthesize the distraction for procedural pain literature, and we highlight some of the issues to consider when conducting research or applying distraction in clinical settings. We conclude the chapter with a vignette, which illustrates some of the nuances to consider when applying and personalizing distraction for a child undergoing an acute painful procedure.

A sequel to The Holy Woman(2001), Typhoon(2003) is Qaisra Shahraz’s second novel. This paper analyses how Shahraz continues problematizing female sexuality and the politics attached to it, especially in rural Pakistan. It dilates upon the discourse that surrounds the female body and sexuality in Pakistan society within and outside the framework of marriage. What is at stake is that women’s own sexuality becomes a burden for them. On the contrary, men take pride in their masculinity which gives authenticity to their voice. The cultural colonization of women’s lives (as it appears in Shahraz’s novel) is addressed under the theoretical rationale of Islamic feminism. This is done with the aim to locate the space granted to women in Islam, especially when it comes to the female body and its sexuality.

This paper represents the research and analysis of the psychological impacts of colour, as well as discusses the importance of the awareness of such effects. The theoretical rationale provides context and details plan for a proposed digital tool – a not-for-profit educational mobile iOS application Colour-In – that detects and measures colours from a supplied image, analyzes, and provides information about the psychological influence and significance of those colours. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the education of colour effects and improve the learning experience by integrating digital technologies into the educational process in various academic and professional practices.

When developing behavior change interventions in a systematic way, an important step is to first identify determinants relevant to a target behavior. Subsequently, limited resources create a need to select those determinants that are most relevant to this behavior. Regression analyses are commonly used for selecting determinants, but the aim of this article is to explain why regression analyses are not suitable for this purpose (i.e., the regression trap). This aim is achieved in three ways. First, by providing a theoretical rationale based on overlap between determinants. The meaning of regression weights is commonly explained as expressing the association between a determinant and a target behavior 'holding all other predictors constant.' We explain that this often boils down to 'neglecting a part of human psychology.' Second, by providing mathematical proof based on the formulas that are used to calculate regression weights. We demonstrate that the interpretation of regression weights is distorted by correlations between determinants. Third, by providing examples based on real-world data to demonstrate the impact this has in practice. This results in interventions targeting determinants that are less relevant and, thereby, have less impact on behavior change. In closing, we discuss a possible solution to circumvent the regression trap.
