Solvent front position extraction procedure was used to prepare biological samples containing selected antihypertensive drugs (ramipril, lercanidipine, indapamide, valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, perindopril, and nebivolol). Substances separated from the biological matrix components (bovine serum albumin) were quantified by means of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Sample preparation process was performed with the use of a prototype horizontal chamber with a moving pipette driven by a 3D printer mechanism enabling a controlled eluent flow velocity. Application of this device was advantageous for simultaneous preparation of several samples for further quantitative analysis, with a synchronized reduction of manual operations and solvent consumption. Quantitative results obtained for the majority of the investigated antihypertensive drugs in a complex biological matrix were satisfactory. The values of the %RSD were around 5% for six of the seven substances (with the exception of indapamide). The method exhibits a suitable accuracy (the relative error percentage was below 10% for most drugs). The values of LOD and LOQ were in the range of 1.19 µg/L–8.53 µg/L and 3.61 µg/L–25.8 µg/L, respectively.

Abstract Synthetic Cannabinoids (SC) are amongst the most prevalent class of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) which have emerged. The increase in hospitalisation and fatalities as a result of the prevalence of these SC and their abuse, highlights the necessity for the rapid and reliable screening for the substance within toxicological samples. Being able to rapidly screen for these substances would aim to improve overdose triage and ultimately improve treatment administration. Not only this but it would have further advantages for in-field applications such as the identification of drivers under the influence. To this avail we investigate the ability of a simple electrochemical screening strategy for the detection of SC, BB-22 and its primary metabolite BB-22-3-Carboxyindole. Assessment of the feasibility of the strategy for implementation into toxicological sample analysis was performed through detection not only under ideal electrolyte conditions (down to 5 µM for BB-22 and 2 µM for its metabolite) but also within the complex biological matrix of human pooled serum (between 200 and 700 µM), a relevant matrix it would likely encounter if employed within this field.

The development of more sensitive methodologies, capable of quickly detecting and monitoring a microbial population present in a specific biological matrix, as well as performing to allow for the study of all its metabolic changes (e.g., during the formation of biofilm) to occur, is an essential requirement for both well-being and the food industry. Two techniques, in particular, have gained the attention of scientists: The first is “biospeckle”, an optical technique representing an innovative tool for applications in food quality, food safety, and nutraceuticals. With this technique, we can quickly evaluate and monitor the presence of bacteria (or their proliferation) in a solid or liquid biological matrix. In addition, the technique is helpful in quantifying and optimizing the correct storage time of the pro-biotics, if they are entrapped in matrices such as alginate and follow their survival rate in simulated gastro-intestinal conditions. A second technique with great chances is the “biofilm electrostatic test” (BET). BET undoubtedly represents a fast, simple, and highly reproducible tool suitable for admitting the evaluation of the in vitro bacterial capacity in order to adhere through an electrostatic interaction with a pyro-electrified carrier after only 2 h of incubation. BET could represent the way for a quick and standardized evaluation of bacterial resistance among biofilm-producing microorganisms through a fast evaluation of the potential presence of the biofilm.

Application of the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent consisting of the micro- and nanometer fibers for the on-line extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from a biological matrix has been introduced. A 100 μL human serum sample spiked with ketoprofen, naproxen, sodium diclofenac, and indomethacin was directly injected in the extraction cartridge filled with the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent. This cartridge was coupled with a chromatographic instrument via a six-port switching valve allowing the analyte extraction and separation within a single analytical run. The 1.5 min long extraction step isolated the analytes from the proteinaceous matrix was followed by their 13 min HPLC separation using Ascentis Express RP-Amide (100 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) column. The recovery of all analytes from human serum tested at three concentration levels ranged from 70.1% to 118.7%. The matrix calibrations were carried out in the range 50 to 20,000 ng mL−1 with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.996. The detection limit was 15 ng mL−1, and the limit of quantification corresponded to 50 ng mL−1. The developed method was validated and successfully applied for the sodium diclofenac determination in real patient serum. Our study confirmed the ability of the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent to remove the proteins from the biological matrix, thus serving as an alternative to the application of restricted-access media.

The foundation of Dubliners of James Joyce was laid on the cross-pollination of Freudian and Kantian theories. Cross-pollination of Kantian imperatives and Freudian psyche is conspicuous in ‘Eveline’ and ‘Painful case’ in Dubliners, where lies the focal point of this analysis. Cross-pollination is highly obvious in the protagonists of two short stories ‘Eveline’ and ‘Painful case’. Psychological and scientific analysis of the characters brought the embedded cross-pollination into the limelight. For Freud, humans exist as a composite of a natural, biological matrix (termed unconsciousness) and another part, the conscious ego (Tauber, 2009). Sigmund Freud’s super-ego is the womb of guilt feeling, which functioned so well in the characters of Joyce. The explicit dilemma of Eveline and the implicit dilemma of Mr. Duffy have been analyzed through the lens of Kantian imperatives.
