In the marine fire suppression system, continuous delivery of dry chemical powder to the fire source with long powder discharge range and high dispersion concentration is essential. The work is devoted to experimental and numerical studies of the flow characteristics of the dry chemical powder jet from a horizontal injector with a wide range of Stokes numbers between 6 to 30 and Reynolds numbers between 4792 to 23,960 by considering the effect of gravitational acceleration. A CFD-based Eulerian–Eulerian multiphase model combined with Standard k-ω turbulence model was used to predict flow characteristics of particle-laden jet using dimensionless numbers, including the solid volume fraction, the normalized velocity magnitude, and the turbulent viscosity ratio. Experimental studies have been carried out for three different inflow velocities (2.06, 2.45, and 2.81 m/s). The results indicate that the particle density plays a significant role in the dispersion of the particles in the radial and axial directions. The transition from U-shaped to V-shaped solid dispersion structure on the ground can be captured with the increase of particle density. Moreover, the higher level turbulence intensity enhances the solid dispersion concentration. Finally, it was found that the Portland cement powder exhibits better discharge performance in terms of solid discharge range and dispersion concentration in comparison with other dry powders. These results have implications in the design of powder-based fire suppression system. Further studies should aim to the in-depth research on the fire extinguishing mechanism of the Portland cement powder, especially the fire suppression effectiveness and thermal decomposition process.

In this manuscript, the influence of gallium content additions of Al-Zn-In-Mg alloy was investigated through electrochemical techniques and microstructure observation in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The results indicated that Al-Zn-In-Mg-0.03Ga alloy has the best discharge performance among all alloys. We propose that this is due to the fact that gallium addition to the Al-4Zn-In-Mg alloy improves the discharge activity of the alloy as well as elevating its anodic efficiency. In particular, the effect of gallium addition to improve discharge activity tends to be a parabolic curve, in which there is an increase when the gallium is first added that rises to the maximum anode current efficiency of about 98.25% whenever gallium content is 0.03 wt%.

Abstract Here we present a 1D model of a Li-Sulfur battery with physically derived geometric parameters and thermodynamically consistent electrochemical kinetics. The approach enables straightforward comparison of proposed Li-S mechanisms and provides insights into the influence of polysulfide intermediates on battery discharge. Comparing predictions from multiple mechanisms demonstrates the need for both lithiated and non-lithiated polysulfide species, and highlights the challenge of developing parameter estimates for complex electrochemical mechanisms. The model is also used to explore cathode design strategies. Discharge performance and polysulfide concentrations for electrolyte/sulfur rations in the range 2 - 4 microleters per mg identifies trade-offs that limit battery energy and power density, and highlights the risk of polysulfide precipitation. New cathode and electrolyte approaches must limit polysulfide concentrations in the electrolyte, both to unlock better rate capabilities in Li-S technology and to prevent capacity fade due to polysulfide precipitation.

Abstract In this work, the self-corrosion and discharge performance of the as-cast Mg-xSn (x=1, 5, 9 wt.%) anodes for primary Mg-air batteries were studied through microstructure characterization, electrochemical testing and discharge experiments. With the increase of Sn content, the volume fraction of the Mg2Sn phase increases, promoting dendrite refining. According to the electrochemical test, the Mg-1Sn anode shows a higher open circuit potential, resulting in a stronger electrochemical activity. The polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectra show the corrosion resistance order as Mg-1Sn>Mg-5Sn>Mg-9Sn. In the discharge measurement, the Mg-1Sn anode achieves the best average discharge voltage, anode efficiency, specific capacity, and energy density under all current densities tested. At 10 mA cm-2, the energy density of Mg-1Sn is 1239.621 mWh g-1, which is higher than the Mg-5Sn anode and Mg-9Sn anode, 37% and 25%, respectively. The optimal discharge performance of the Mg-1Sn anode is mainly attributed to the high electrochemical activity and the micron-sized Mg2Sn phase dispersed in the matrix, which facilitates more uniform dissolution.

Studying the discharge characteristics of transmission line insulators in the presence of pollution, particularly when the contaminated layer is wet by rain, fog or condensation, is necessary for selecting the proper insulation. Therefore, identifying the major air pollutants as well as the most effective ones on the discharge performance of outdoor insulators is mandatory. A systematic approach has been proposed to evaluate the impact of dominant air pollutants of an area on partial discharge (P.D) inception voltage of specimen insulators. Based on the suggested method, determining the pollution constituents, defining the dominant pollutant of the area, finding the most commonly used insulators for medium and above distribution voltages within the geographical boundaries of the Central Province of Iran, as well as examining the effect of dominant air pollutant of the region on partial discharge inception voltage of designated insulators by laboratory measurements, are the necessary steps toward a comprehensive study of the subject.
