Parthenocarpic tomato can set fruit and develop without pollination and exogenous hormone treatments under unfavorable environmental conditions, which is beneficial to tomato production from late fall to early spring in greenhouses. In this study, the endogenous hormones in the ovaries of the parthenocarpic tomato line “R35-P” (stigma removed or self-pollination) and the non-parthenocarpic tomato line “R35-N” (self-pollination) at four stages between preanthesis and postanthesis investigated, using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). A nearly twofold IAA (indoleacetic acid) content was found in “R35-P” rather than in “R35-N” at −2 and 0 days after anthesis (DAA). Except at −2 DAA, a lower ABA (abscisic acid) content was observed in Pe (stigma removed in “R35-P”) compared to that in Ps (self-pollination in “R35-P”) or CK (self-pollination in “R35-N”). After pollination, although the content of GA1 (gibberellins acid 1) in CK increased, the levels of GAs (gibberellins acids) were notably low. At all four stages, a lower SA (salicylic acid) content was found in Ps and CK than in Pe, while the content and the change trend were similar in Ps and CK. The variation tendencies of JA (jasmonic acid) varied among Pe, Ps, and CK at the studied periods. Furthermore, KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enrichment analyses of transcriptomic data identified 175 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to plant hormone signal transduction, including 63 auxin-related genes, 27 abscisic acid-related genes, 22 ethylene-related genes, 16 cytokinin-related genes, 16 salicylic acid-related genes, 14 brassinosteroid-related genes, 13 jasmonic acid-related genes, and 4 gibberellin-related genes at −2 DAA and 0 DAA. Our results suggest that the fate of a fruit set or degeneration occurred before anthesis in tomato. Auxins, whose levels were independent of pollination and fertilization, play prominent roles in controlling a fruit set in “R35-P,” and other hormones are integrated in a synergistic or antagonistic way.

The experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October 2016 to April 2017. The experiment was conducted to assess the effect of two factors, for example; I, two levels of foliar spray of boron as:100 ppm boric acid (B1) and 200 ppm boric acid (B2) in relation to a control and II, three different tomato cultivars/lines as: L1: Exotic Tomato Line-1, L2: Exotic Tomato Line-2, L3: BARI Tomato-15. The two factorial experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Fruit setting (56.73%), yield (64.89 t/ha) and total soluble solid (TSS) (4.3%) were considerably higher in B1 and low in B2. Whereas, significantly higher yield (79.87 t/ha) was recorded in L3 in in comparison to L1. Considering quality parameters, Vitamin C (20 mg) was the highest in L3 whereas TSS (4.58%) was the highest in L1. In interaction effect, the highest yield (85 t/ha) was obtained from B1L3 and the lowest (31.23 t/ha) in B2L1. The present study suggest to cultivate BARI Tomato-15, but other two exotic lines adapted well and showed good performance in terms of yield and quality parameters.

Abstract Acylsugars have been shown to provide activity against numerous insect pests of tomatoes. Comparison of acylsugar levels in four tomato plant lines, FA7/AS, FA2/AS, CU071026, and ‘Yellow Pear’, found that the acylsugar contents in the elevated acylsugar lines were significantly higher than the commercial Yellow Pear (control) tomato plant line. Adult choice tests indicated that the tomato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, preferred to settle on the Yellow Pear and FA2/AS lines over the line with the highest content of acylsugars, FA7/AS, and the parental line, CU071026. The no-choice test demonstrated that adults laid fewer eggs on the high acylsugar tomato lines than on the control tomato line, Yellow Pear. For all high acylsugar lines, the relative growth index of the psyllid was significantly lower compared with the commercial line, indicating a reduced potential for population growth. Although some tomato psyllids completed their life cycle on the high acylsugar tomato plant lines, the percent survival of psyllids to the adult stage when developing on the high acylsugar lines was significantly less (range = 43.7–57.1%) than on the commercial tomato line (83.8%). All mortality occurred during the early stages of development (egg stage to third instar), which has implications for acquisition and transmission of Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum, the causal agent of tomato vein greening disease. Therefore, with reduced attractiveness for tomato psyllids and significantly reduced survival, the high-acylsugar tomato plant lines have the potential to be part of an integrated pest management program for this pest.

To examine the role of RNA silencing in defense against viroid, a Dicer-like 2 and 4 (DCL2&4)—double knockdown transgenic tomato line 72E was created. The expression of endogenous DCL2 and DCL4 in line 72E decreased to about a half of the empty cassette line EC. When challenged with potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), 72E allowed significantly higher level of PSTVd accumulation early in infection and showed lethal systemic necrosis. The size distribution of PSTVd-derived small RNA was significantly changed: the numbers of 21 and 22 nucleotides (nt) species in line 72E was approximately 66.7% and 5% of those in line EC, respectively. Conversely, the numbers of 24-nt species increased by 1100%. Furthermore, expression of miR398a-3p and miR398 increased 770–868% in the PSTVd-infected 72E, compared to the PSTVd-infected EC. In parallel, superoxide dismutase (SOD1) in PSTVd-infected 72E showed higher expression levels. In concert with miR398a-3p, SOD1 controls detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in cells. Since high levels of ROS production and its scavenging activity were observed in PSTVd-infected 72E, the lack of full-activity of DCLs was thought to have made the plant incapable to control excessive ROS production and thus resulted in to develop lethal systemic necrosis.

ABSTRACT We report here the complete genome sequences of two Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum strains, isolated from the warm northeast region of Brazil. They display divergent (compatible versus incompatible) interactions with the resistant tomato line Hawaii 7996. Polymorphisms were detected in a subset of effector genes that might be associated with these contrasting phenotypes.
