  The story of Beauty and her beast is truly a tale as old as time: a beautiful girl falls in love with a beast and her love transforms him into a prince. This project is framed by Joosen’s (2011) argument regarding fairy tale retellings disrupting Jauss and Benzinger’s (1970) claim that fairy tales and retellings align with the horizon of expectations. Using Kemmerer’s A Curse so Dark and Lonely (2019), a “Beauty and the Beast” retelling, this essay tests Joosen’s (2011) theory to determine if the retelling remains true to or diverges from the original parent material.

Abstract The Santa Fé Ni-Co deposit is a major undeveloped lateritic deposit located in the Goiás State of Central Brazil. The deposit comprises two properties that together have indicated resources of 35.7 million tonnes (Mt), grading 1.14% Ni and 0.083% Co, and inferred resources of 104.3 Mt at 1.03% Ni and 0.054% Co. The laterite was derived from Late Cretaceous alkaline ultramafic lithologies that experienced an initial silicification from Eocene to Oligocene, followed by lateritization and partial reworking in Miocene-Pliocene. The deposit is characterized both by oxide- and phyllosilicate-dominated ore zones. In the former, Ni- and Co-bearing hematite and goethite dominate the supergene mineralogical assemblage, while ore-bearing Mn oxyhydroxides occur as minor components. In the phyllosilicate-dominated horizons the major Ni-carrying phase is chlorite. Multivariate statistical analyses (factor analysis and principal components analysis) conducted on the drill core assay database (bulk-rock chemical analyses) showed that significant differences exist between Ni and Co distributions. The Ni distribution is not controlled by any clear geochemical correlation. This is because the highest Ni concentrations have been measured in the ferruginous and in the ochre saprolite zones, where Ni-bearing minerals (chlorite and goethite) are mostly associated with reworked material and only in a limited way, with zones affected by in situ ferrugination. Cobalt has an atypical statistical distribution at Santa Fé if compared with other laterites, correlated not only with Mn but also with Cr in the majority of the laterite facies. From microchemical analyses on several potential Co-bearing minerals, it was found that the Co-Cr association is related to elevated Co contents in residual spinels, representing unweathered phases of the original parent rock now included in the laterite. This element distribution is atypical for Ni-Co laterite deposits, where Co is normally associated with Mn in supergene oxyhydroxides. In the case of the Santa Fé laterite, the Co concentration in spinels is likely related to magmatic and postmagmatic processes that affected the original parent rock before lateritization, specifically (1) orthomagmatic enrichment of Co in chromite, due to its high affinity to spinels in alkaline melts, and (2) trace elements (i.e., Co, Mn, Ni, and Zn) redistribution during the hydrothermal alteration of chromite into ferritchromite. The Santa Fé deposit represents a good example of how the prelateritic evolution of a parent rock strongly affects the efficiency of Co mobilization and enrichment during supergene alteration. Based on the interpretation of metallurgical test work, a fraction of total Co between 20 and 50% is locked in spinels.

A different level of ascorbic acid accumulation in the apple original parent varieties and hybrid offspring was identified. The best promising genotypes and cross combinations worthy of use in further breeding studies were revealed.

In this article, an attempt is made to synthesize some insights drawn from the fields of narrative medicine and psychoanalysis regarding the caregiver–patient relationship. All experiences of care are viewed as having their root in the original parent–infant relationships, which take places in a complex matrix of empathic attunement and minutely engaged attention to the body and communications of the other. It is suggested that the Buddhist practice of upaya is a useful analogy for the kind of open attunement that is to be aspired to in relations of care, and how such an analogous framework may be helpful to clinicians in attending, thinking and feeling toward their patients.

В работе приведены исследования по скрещиванию комбинированных пород крупного рогатого скота с мясными с целью создания репродуктивных мясных стад на базе использования помесных телок первого поколения. Во все возрастные периоды коровы симментальской, герефордской пород и их помеси с генотипом симменталы герефорды имели определенные различия по живой массе. Помеси превосходили по данному показателю в возрасте 3, 4 и 5 лет сверстниц симментальской породы на 6,78 3,98 и 3,61 и герефордской, соответственно, на 2,64 2,52 и 1,60. Они обладали хорошими воспроизводительными качествами. Так, в возрасте 205 дней дочери помесных коров по живой массе превосходили потомков чистопородных симментальских и герефордских коров, соответственно, на 21,78 и 3,64 кг. У помесных бычков выход туши был выше, чем у чистопородных симментальских и герефордских сверстников на 3,20 и 2,03, убойная масса на 73,40 и 38,37 кг, а убойный выход на 3,44 и 2,14, соответственно. В результате проведенной оценки показателей, характеризующих мясную продуктивность чистопородного и помесного потомства, можно сделать вывод о характере сочетаемости симментальской и герефордской пород и о том, что помеси, при сравнении их с исходными родительскими формами, имели во всех случаях лучшие показатели, характеризующие мясную продуктивность.The paper presents the research on the crossing of combined breeds with meat in order to create reproductive beef herds based on the use of firstgeneration mixed heifers. In all age periods of the Simmental and Hereford cows and their mixture with the genotype simmentals x the Hereford had certain differences in live weight. Hybrids aged exceeded in this indicator at the age of 3, 4 and 5 years of age peers of the Simmental breed by 6.78 3.98 and 3.61 and Hereford, respectively, by 2.64 2.52 and 1.60. Hybrids had good reproductive qualities. Thus, at the age of 205 days, the daughters of crossbred cows exceeded the descendants of purebred Simmental and Hereford cows by 21.78 and 3.64 kg, respectively. Crossbred bulls had higher carcass yield than purebred Simmental and Hereford peers by 3.2 and 2.03, slaughter weight by 73.40 kg and 38.37 kg, slaughter yield by 3.44 and 2.14, respectively. ABSTRACT“Decision making has all the secrets of everything: who we are, what we do, how we navigate the world.” “How Do I Decide? The Brain with David Eagleman”, 2015.When presented with attractant (light) together with an amount of repellent (methyl eugenol) that exceeds attractant,Drosophila melanogasterfruit flies are of course repelled, but nine mutants have now been isolated that were not repelled. Although able to respond to attractant alone and to repellent alone, these mutants fail to make a decision when the two are together during the first two months of the study. They are considered defective in a decision-making mechanism. The defect occurs at 34°C but not at room temperature, so these are conditional mutants. Efforts at genetic mapping have been made. Our aim is to discover how decision making gets accomplished and how this results in a behavioral response. We indicate that there is a mechanistic relationship between decision making and the central complex inDrosophilaand between decision making and the prefrontal cortex in humans and other vertebrates.Over a period of six months these mutants changed into ones that are attracted when presented with attractant together with what was overpowering repellent before. Nearly full attraction was achieved at fifteen to thirty days. With attractant alone these mutants were attracted like the original parent and with repellents alone they were repelled like the original parent. The mutants have been genetically mapped.

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is an extremely valuable tool, as it measures full crystallographic orientation information. This technique has been used to measure the statistics of misorientations between original ‘parent’ grains and recrystallised ‘daughter’ grains in a mylonitic quartzite. The angle of misorientation has implications on the controlling recrystallisation mechanism. The sample is a natural mylonitic quartzite collected from the stack of Glencoul, NW Scotland. The sample exhibits a common partially recrystallised microstructure. The data shows the average misorientations between the ‘parent’ and ‘daughter’ grains are 30º, this value seems too high for only subgrain rotation recrystallisation to be taking place. Moreover there is no gradation in the boundary misorientation from the internal substructure of the ‘parent’ grain to the ‘daughter’ grains. The internal substructure size of the ‘parent’ grain is bigger than the size of the ‘daughter’ grains. For subgrain rotation recrystallisation you may expect to see a core and mantle structure and for the ‘daughter’ grains’ to be of similar size to the internal substructure of the ‘parent’ grain. Another mechanism has either controlled the recrystallisation altogether or has become active after subgrain rotation had taken place and modified the microstructure.

Understanding how meteorites and near–Earth asteroids reach their Earth–crossing orbits starting as fragments from main–belt asteroids is a basic prerequisite to identifying the original parent bodies of these objects and building a self–consistent cosmogonical interpretation of the observed properties of meteorites. We review the recent progress made in this area and the most important remaining open problems. These concern the physics of asteroidal collisions, the size distribution of small main–belt asteroids, the efficiency of different dynamical routes, and the relationships between asteroid taxonomic types based on spectrophotometry data and meteorite classes having different thermal histories and compositions.
