The aim of the paper is to evaluate teachers´ competences and their self-reflection in the teaching process. The topicality of the research presented in the paper is given by the fact that teachers at university level must prove excellent competences regardless external factors which affect the teaching process any time. Competence is the key qualified and professional job performance in any sector. The paper focuses on the competences of university teachers which they acquire and develop throughout their career. Attention is given to professionally and personality cultivating competences, part of which is also self-reflection. Self-reflection refers to a person’s ability of introspection and willingness to learn more about own abilities and skills. This will lead to a better ability to identify changes that may be required. The methodology consists in a research based on a questionnaire survey and statistical evaluation of gathered information. The paper gives an outline of the evaluation process at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), during which opinions of students and teachers about instruction were analysed, together with the fulfilment of selected university competences. The main body of the paper is dedicated to the statistical processing of selected data from the evaluation survey conducted by using the SPSS programme. The results indicate that there are significant deviations of teachers´ self-evaluation from the students´ opinion. The Institute of Education and Communication is going to offer courses in advanced competence development using techniques of self-reflection. This has a potential to enhance effectiveness of the teaching process at university level.

This study describes nurses’ experiences in identifying mental ill-health in older men in primary care. The aging population is growing in Sweden and life expectancy is increasing. Age is a risk factor for mental ill-health. Older men are over-represented in deaths from suicide. When older men seek primary care, it is often because of somatic symptoms and rarely for mental health issues. A questionnaire with five open questions was answered by 39 nurses from 10 primary care centres and subjected to inductive qualitative content analysis. The results revealed a main theme—capturing the unsaid—and two categories: (1) feeling secure in the role, with three subcategories (building trust, daring to ask and interpreting signs); and (2) the need for resources, with two subcategories (time and continuity, and finding support in collaboration). The results confirm that nurses in primary care play a key role in identifying mental ill-health in older men. There is a need for resources in the form of time, competence and collaboration with other professionals and patients’ relatives. This strategy will establish best practice and provide evidence-based care to facilitate improvements in older men’s mental health and prevent suicide.

Teachers and learners alike bring past experiences into present teaching and learning contexts. Group work is an experience that carries equal measures of joyful anticipation and mournful trepidation. Learners typically experience group work as an uneven distribution of time, competence, and accountability, and seem to have lingering memories of one or two people doing all the work in order to salvage a respectable grade. While students must understand the group process when they work in problem- or inquiry-based teams, we think the onus should also be on the instructor to devise methods of equity and accountability, which address the aforementioned justifiable fears. Our paper will describe several strategies we have used to anticipate and offset the inevitable tensions and contingencies inherent in group work.
