We estimate a macroeconomic model on US data where banks lend to households and businesses and simultaneously adjust lending requirements on the two types of loans. We find that the collateral shock, a change in the ability of the financial sector to redeploy collateral, is the most important force driving the business cycle. Hit by this unique disturbance, our model quantitatively replicates the joint dynamics of output, consumption, investment, employment, and both household and business credit quantities and spreads. The estimated collateral shock generates accurate movements in lending standards and tracks measures of market sentiment. (JEL E21, E23, E24, E32, E44, G21)

A mathematical and numerical model of the joint dynamics of shallow and ground waters has been built, which takes into account the nonlinear dynamics of a liquid, water absorption from the surface into the ground, filtration currents in the ground, and water seepage from the ground back to the surface. The dynamics of shallow waters is described by the Saint-Venant equations, taking into account the spatially inhomogeneous distributions of the terrain, the coefficients of bottom friction and infiltration, as well as non-stationary sources and flows of water. For the numerical integration of Saint-Venant’s equations, the well-tested CSPH-TVD method of the second order of accuracy is used, the parallel CUDA algorithm of which is implemented as a software package “EcoGIS-Simulation” for high-performance computing on supercomputers with graphic coprocessors (GPU). The dynamics of groundwater is described by the nonlinear Bussensk equation, generalized to the case of a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of the parameters of the porous medium and the surface of the aquiclude (the boundary between water-permeable and low-permeable soils). The numerical solution of this equation is built on the basis of a finite-difference scheme of the second order of accuracy, the CUDA algorithm of which is integrated into the calculation module of the “EcoGIS-Simulation” software package and is consistent with the main stages of the CSPH-TVD method. The relative deviation of the numerical solution from the exact solution of the nonlinear Boussinesq equation does not exceed 10−4–10−5. The paper compares the results of numerical modeling of the dynamics of groundwater with analytical solutions of the linearized Bussensk equation used as calculation formulas in the methods for predicting the level of groundwater in the vicinity of water bodies. It is shown that the error of these methods is several percent even for the simplest case of a plane-parallel flow of groundwater with a constant backwater. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the proposed method for numerical modeling of the joint dynamics of surface and ground waters can be more versatile and efficient (it has significantly better accuracy and productivity) in comparison with the existing methods for calculating flooding zones, especially for hydrodynamic flows with complex geometry and nonlinear interaction of counter fluid flows arising during seasonal floods during flooding of vast land areas.

Abstract People who experienced disability in childhood are living longer. It is not clear if longer lives indicate better health and less dependency, or if longer life is accompanied by increased dependency. We addressed that question by studying the joint dynamics of mortality and dependency. This population is “invisible” in most national surveys, which do not ask about childhood disability. We evaluated special education history as an indicator of childhood disability, and used that indicator to estimate dependency and life expectancy throughout adult life. Data: Panel Study of Income Dynamics and the Health and Retirement Study (n=20,563). Activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental ADLs, and cognition defined five functioning levels including dependency and death. Multinomial logistic Markov models estimated probabilities for transitioning among the levels, with or without a history of childhood disability, adjusted for demographics. We used the probabilities in microsimulations, creating large populations of completed lives, identifying dependency at each age for each individual. Analysis showed special education history was a valid indicator of childhood disability; 13% had such history. With parent education less than high school, remaining life at age 20 was 46.0 years for people with that history, 58.3 for others; corresponding results with parent’s bachelor’s degree: 48.3 and 60.7 (p<0.05). Corresponding population percentages dependent 5+ years were: 15.2% and 3.8%, 13.1% and 3.8% (all p<0.05). Special education history can indicate childhood disability. People with that history had significantly more dependency than others, and shorter lives. Accommodations and interventions can improve their health and functioning.

Fatty acid overload, either of the saturated palmitic acid (PA) or the unsaturated oleic acid (OA), causes triglyceride accumulation into specialized organelles termed lipid droplets (LD). However, only PA overload leads to liver damage mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction. Whether these divergent outcomes stem from differential effects of PA and OA on LD and mitochondria joint dynamics remains to be uncovered. Here, we contrast how both fatty acids impact the morphology and interaction between both organelles and mitochondrial bioenergetics in HepG2 cells. Using confocal microscopy, we showed that short-term (2–24 h) OA overload promotes more and bigger LD accumulation than PA. Oxygen polarography indicated that both treatments stimulated mitochondrial respiration; however, OA favored an overall build-up of the mitochondrial potential, and PA evoked mitochondrial fragmentation, concomitant with an ATP-oriented metabolism. Even though PA-induced a lesser increase in LD-mitochondria proximity than OA, those LD associated with highly active mitochondria suggest that they interact mainly to fuel fatty acid oxidation and ATP synthesis (that is, metabolically “active” LD). On the contrary, OA overload seemingly stimulated LD-mitochondria interaction mainly for LD growth (thus metabolically “passive” LDs). In sum, these differences point out that OA readily accumulates in LD, likely reducing their toxicity, while PA preferably stimulates mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, which may contribute to liver damage progression.

AbstractGait maturation in infants develops gradually through several phases. However, external factors such as childrearing practices, especially the wearing of diapers, may affect an infant’s motor development. This study investigated the influence of different bulk stresses on the gait of toddlers wearing a disposable diaper. Twenty-six healthy toddlers (age: 19.2 ± 0.9 months) participated in this study. We measured the joint kinematics (pelvis angle and hip-joint angle) and spatiotemporal parameters (step length and step width) of the toddlers’ gait under four dress conditions (wearing Type A_WET, Type A_DRY, and Type B_WET diapers and naked). Type B_WET had a higher bulk stress than Type A_WET, and Type A_DRY had lower stress than Type A _ WET. Our results indicate that the walk of toddlers when wearing a diaper differs from that when naked. This difference is due to the effect of the bulk of the diaper on the lower limb. A high bulk stress has a greater influence than that of a low bulk stress on joint dynamics and step width. Therefore, our findings suggest that wearing diapers with high bulk stress may inhibit the natural gait patterns of toddlers.

Abstract Telematicsdevices installed in insured vehicles provide actuaries with new risk factors, such as the time of the day, average speeds, and other driving habits. This paper extends the multivariate mixed model describing the joint dynamics of telematics data and claim frequencies proposed by Denuit et al. (2019a) by allowing for signals with various formats, not necessarily integer-valued, and by replacing the estimation procedure with the Expected Conditional Maximization algorithm. A numerical study performed on a database related to Pay-How-You-Drive, or PHYD motor insurance illustrates the relevance of the proposed approach for practice.

In this paper, a parameter estimation method is proposed to predict the simultaneous joint dynamics of a surgical robotic arm that is tracking trajectories. It mainly deals with the design, modeling, prototyping and control of a serial robotic arm for robot-assisted urological surgery. This robot is composed of many joints mounted in series with the surgical tool end performing both a translational workspace and a cone-shaped orientation workspace. The joints dynamics is obtained by trajectory planning of the tool end in the virtual prototype modeling environment. The motor drive system is parameterized for design, and its comprehensive performance in motion is predicted accurately. The heterogeneous master–slave control system was built, and the performances of the master–slave prototype were experimentally evaluated by measuring the positioning error of the virtual fixed point and the surgical tool end along the planned trajectory.
