Temuan ini juga menggarisbawahi pentingnya fungsi keluarga untuk memperkuat empati remaja agar menghindarkan mereka untuk menjadi cyberbystander.

ICT use in family functioning is an important area to study as the impact changes when technology grows over years. This research analyzed the role of ICT use in process & structure of families using the factors present in Hertlein multitheoretical model. The additional factor ‘family communication pattern’ was introduced and tested along with the process factor to know its importance. The study has taken 756 samples (both parents & children) in Chennai and tested two hypothesis. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to analyze the data. The result shows that ICT has influenced the process changes of the families. The structural changes in families are slowly started occurring and that is not as significant as process changes. The added new factor has loaded positively with existing factors shows that family communication is important for family process and thus contributed for theoretical development.

Parents are the pillars in providing a good environment in the family. Communication among family members and siblings is also found affecting the decision-making process and clear communication between parents and child can bring them to a very positive and effective interaction. McLeod and Chaffee (1972) formulated the quadrant family communication pattern framework namely, permissive, pluralistic, prohibitive and protective. Applying this framework, this study aimed to identify patterns of family communication between parents and their children in the choice of a life partner. Using a survey method, questionnaires were distributed to 400 respondents throughout Peninsular Malaysia and analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) version 23. The mean analysis was performed to identify the most dominant family communication patterns when discussing marriage matters. The study found that protective family communication pattern showed the highest level of practice among all communication patterns and have proven to be a significant contributor for Malaysian youth on their decisions towards marriage and life partner choices. The results from this study contribute to the understanding of the importance of communication among family in the decision making with regards to marriage. The present study adds to the existing knowledge on the importance of communication among family members and provides direction for future research work in this area. Keywords: Family communication, pattern, youth, marriage, protective family.

This article aims to find a shift in Minangkabau culture that began from a family environment. This article studied four types of Minangkabau families with children aged 10-19 years. This study applied descriptive qualitative research methods with in-depth interview techniques. The SPEAKING model of Hymes was used to construct communication patterns within the family when passing down Minangkabau’s norms through storytelling to children. Norms that do not resemble Minangkabau cultural teachings were taught by families with Minang fathers, while families with non-Minang fathers taught norms that were similar to Minangkabau cultural teachings. This family always taught the value of survival and common sense due their status as migrants. In fact, this is the core value instilled by the ancestors of the Minangkabau people that was misunderstood by their younger generations. The meaning of survival and common sense value introduced by Minangkabau cultural teachings need to be clarified to children through their family environment, so that they can be closer to their own cultural roots. This condition makes them keen to build their own region equipped with positive values learned from the Minangkabau culture.
