A single-beam optical-trap sample holder for X-ray diffraction measurements with synchrotron radiation has been developed. The sample holder was used to obtain an X-ray diffraction image of a single ZnO particle levitated in air, without mechanical contact, by the optical gradient force exerted by a focused laser beam. The diffraction image showed a Debye ring pattern, which was similar to a powder diffraction pattern of an assemblage of ZnO particles. While the ZnO particle is held by the optical trap in air, it rotates irregularly. Therefore, the Debye ring pattern of the ZnO particle can be clearly obtained even if the ZnO particle is a single grain. Lattice parameters and crystallite size of the single ZnO particle were determined simultaneously. The lattice parameters were determined to be a = 3.2505 ± 0.0005 Å and c = 5.207 ± 0.006 Å, which are consistent with those of the assemblage of ZnO particles. The crystallite size determined by the Scherrer method was 193.4 ± 26.2 nm.

The welding residual stress has different effects on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy welded joints, such as size stability, fatigue strength and stress corrosion cracking. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the welding residual stress accurately. In this paper, the residual stress of A7N01 aluminum alloy welded joints was measured by X-ray diffraction. In contrast to the traditional method, the cos[Formula: see text] method was used in this paper, the results were compared with those obtained by the conventional [Formula: see text] method. In addition, the influence of oscillation unit on the test results of the cos[Formula: see text] method was studied.

We investigated the consistency of four methods by analyzing the distorted Debye rings with various stress states. Firstly, the distorted Debye rings were generated under various uni-, bi-and tri-axial stress states by using the fundamental stress-strain relationship in two dimensional X-ray stress analysis theory. Secondly, we performed reverse analysis of stress states in the frameworks of sin2ψ and cosα methods from the simulated Debye rings. Moreover, the profiles of simulated Debye rings were Fourier transformed and the stress states were calculated in accordance with the obtained 1st and 2nd order Fourier coefficients. As a result, it was confirmed that all these methods provide the same stress values. That is to say, all these methods are consistent. Therefore, we can guarantee the validity of choosing any appropriate method considering the geometrical restrictions of experiment.

This paper deals with simplified phase analysis of 2D diffraction patterns obtained using microfocused X-ray at various places of superelastic NiTi wire under combined load. For this purpose, MATLAB routines and functions were created, which carry out integration of the patterns in various sectors of Debye ring, fitting of the patterns by a mixture of austenite and martensite (having neglected the R-phase) and successive evaluation of the quantitative phase content. The most crucial simplificating assumptions were: the neglection of the R-phase and the assumption of a) fibre texture or b) no texture.

Measuring theory of two types of X-ray stress analysis method was compared with each other. One is the conventional method, in which zero-or one-dimensional detector is used for obtaining diffracted beam and stress is determined using the standard sin2ψ method. Another is the new type of X-ray stress analysis method, in which two-dimensional detector is used to obtain whole Debye ring and stress is determined using the cosα method. An experiment was conducted to investigate the validity.

This paper shows X-ray residual stress analysis of stainless steel using 2-dimensional detection method. The 2-dimensional detection method of X-ray stress measurement will determine stress by conducting a 2-dimensional detecting of a Debye ring and analyzing the image data. The basic of typical austenitic stainless steel (JIS SUS304) was studied in this study, considering the fact that, at certain power plants, maintenance takes place to prevent stress corrosion cracking by adding compressive residual stress to the structure..
