Abstract A study on deformation and filtration properties of a leather semi-finished product after chrome tanning are presented. The analytical dependences of compressive load on compressive (recovery) strain and moisture content of a leather semi-finished product are obtained. The empirical dependences of hydraulic gradient on filtration rates are determined for various compression ratios of the leather semi-finished product. It was revealed that with an increase in compressive load and moisture content of the leather semi-finished product, the compressive deformation increases. The shoulder section is subject to the greatest deformation, then the belly section and the least deformation is observed in the butt section. A linear relationship has been established between the hydraulic gradient and the rate of moisture filtration through the leather semi-finished product in the directions perpendicular and parallel to its surface. The shape recovery characteristics of titanium nickelide with an Ni content of 50.0 at % and 50.7 at % were studied in a wide range of structures obtained as a result of cold drawing with an accumulated true strain of e = 0.52 and subsequent annealing in the 250 to 700 °C temperature range. Shape memory effect (SME) inducing was carried out by bending using a non-isothermal loading mode, which made it possible to reveal implementing elastic strain in the equiatomic alloy up to 12% and thereby increase the total shape recovery by a factor of 1.5. The obtained results prove that the Ni content strongly affects the value and specific features of changes of the shape recovery characteristics with loading strain as well as grain/subgrain size. In equiatomic alloy, the total recovery strain manifests its maximum of 13.5–15% and the recovery strain of 9% at a loading strain range of 12 to 14%. In Ni-rich alloy, the total recovery strain manifests its maximum of 20% and the recovery strain of 14% at a loading strain range of 15 to 21%. The maximum two-way SME value correlates with the residual strain in both alloys and reaches its maximum of 3.0% in a material with a recrystallized structure. Varying the loading strain value under bending in the 11 to 21% range allows regulation of the temperature of shape recovery in Ni-rich alloy in the 45 to 80 °C range.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) find use in myriad medical and engineering applications. In these applications, the functional characteristics of the materials are capitalized on. SMAs are used repeatedly over a long period of time in service. With continued usage degradation occurs in their functional properties, leading to a change in recovery strain, recovery stress, phase transformation temperatures and hysteresis. The change in the functional characteristics of the alloys is known as functional fatigue. Functional fatigue affects the performance of the alloys with the alloys losing their intended functionality. This problem is to be addressed if the alloys are to be used effectively and efficiently throughout their lifespan. It is especially important when using the alloys within the human body, where such degradation can affect the performance of the biomedical devices and, in turn, human health and life. Till date not too many researchers have explored this area in greater detail. In order thereforeto better understand this behavior, in the present study, an Ni50Ti44.7Cu5.3 alloy wire with a d=1.43 mm and a l=100 mm was cycled (10,000) under constant stress (55 MPa) between its transformation temperatures, which were determined by DSC (without load). The effect of cycling on the shape memory properties (strain recovery, hysteresis, and transformation temperatures) after a specified number of cycles at regular intervals are considered. The results show that there is considerable difference in the properties obtained and are interpreted and discussed in detail in the paper.

This study examines the effect of Sn additions on Cu-14%Al-4.5%Ni shape memory alloy. Sn was added in three different percentages (0.3,1,3) %. The alloys were mechanically tested both in compression test and micro hardness test. Also, a thermo-mechanical test was performed on the alloys. Results showed an increase in the transformation temperature outside the domain and also a better recovery strain with the increase of Sn percentage of 3% Sn addition showed the best results in mechanical properties while the 3% Sn showed a better Shape Memory Properties near to super elastic.
