The study was developed at the Pampa del Arco Experimental Center of the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga, the objective was to evaluate doses of 800 IU (T1) and doses of 1000 IU (T2) of eCG to obtain embryos. Eight adult female llamas were used, distributed four in each treatment (T1 and T2), with a body condition of 2.5, these were evaluated by ultrasound with a 7.5 MHz rectal linear transducer. Hormonal treatments began when the animals had a follicle> 7 mm. The application of eCG was 72 hours after the induction of ovulation of the dominant follicle with GnRH, on day 7 PGF2α was applied, natural mounting was performed plus GnRH (1ml), on day 15 the collection and evaluation of embryos was performed. The results obtained were the pre-ovarian stimulation follicular diameter of 8.3 mm and 9.1 mm for T1 and T2 respectively, the number of pre-ovulatory follicles was 6.33 and 5.50 for T1 and T2 respectively, the diameter of follicles pre-ovulatory was 11.2mm and 10.6 mm for T1 and T2 respectively, average of embryos recovered per donor was 4.66 ± 0.81 and 3.50 ± 0.54 embryos for T1 and T2 respectively, with a significant difference (p <0.05) and the quality of embryos had 35.7% and 38.1% of embryos of excellent quality, 28.6% and 33.3% of good quality, 10.7% and 9 , 5% of regular quality, 10.7% and 0% of poor quality, for T1 and T2 respectively and 14.3% and 19.0% of non-transferable embryos for T1 and T2 respectively, with no statistical difference (p≥0, 05). It is concluded that the number of embryos recovered with a dose of 800 IU of eCG is higher compared to the dose of 1000 IU of eCG (p <0.05) and that there is no association between the applied dose of eCG and the quality of the llama embryos (p≥0.05)

BACKGROUND: Paralabral cysts are a rare cause of shoulder pain. Linear ultrasound transducers are often used for musculoskeletal evaluation and intervention. However, the use of linear transducer is limited when the target structure is located deep and blocked by bony barriers, as is the case of paralabral ganglion cysts. OBJECTIVE: This case report aims to describe a beneficial role of using a convex transducer on the evaluation and ultrasonography-guided intervention of paralabral cysts below the acromion. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients visiting the outpatient clinic of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation complained of severe pain during shoulder movement. Ultrasound scans with linear transducer detected rotator cuff lesions. Shoulder MRIs performed because of persistent pain despite ultrasound-guided bursa injection at the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa using a linear array transducer, confirmed paralabral cysts. Although a linear array transducer could not visualize the lesion but could only perform suprascapular nerve block and intra-articular injection, the use of a convex array transducer improved the visualization of the cystic lesion which we treated using ultrasound-guided aspiration and intra-cystic injection. Visual analog scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index were checked to assess the treatment effect of each intervention. The intra-cystic injection with aspiration and intra-articular injection showed minimal to moderate improvement of pain score. CONCLUSION: In pain related to shoulder movement, especially pain that continues despite appropriate treatment for rotator cuff lesions, ultrasound diagnosis of paralabral ganglion cysts using convex transducers will improve the diagnostic value and accuracy of intervention.

Rugby players need muscular strength and power to meet the demands of the sport; therefore, a proper assessment of the performance in rugby players should include both variables. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength and power characteristics (SPC) during the squat (SQ) and bench press (BP) in national amateur rugby players and to analyze gender- and position-related differences. A total of 47 players (30 males and 17 females; age: 25.56 ± 1.14 and 23.16 ± 1.38 years, respectively) participated in the study. The one repetition-maximum (1-RM) and SPC in SQ and BP were obtained using a Smith Machine. Then, subjects performed one set of five repetitions on the SQ and BP against six relative loads (30–40–50–60–70–80% 1-RM) using a linear transducer. Differences between genders were found in 1-RM for maximal power, kilograms lifted at maximal power, maximal power, maximal strength and maximal speed in BP (p < 0.00) and 1-RM, kilograms lifted at maximal power, maximal power, maximal strength and maximal speed in SQ (p < 0.00). Comparisons between variables in SQ and BP present a significant relationship (p < 0.01) in SQ and BP 1-RM with kilograms lifted at maximal power (r = 0.86 and r = 0.84), maximal strength (r = 0.53 and r = 0.92) and maximal power (r = 0.76 and r = 0.93). This study confirms the importance of the SPC assessment for training prescription in rugby amateur players.

The diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) for frozen shoulder (FS) is not well established. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of US measurement of inferior joint capsule (IJC) thickness and evaluate changes in the thickness of the IJC by US depending on arm position. A total of 71 patients with clinically diagnosed unilateral FS who underwent bilateral US measurement of the IJC were enrolled in this study. The US measurement of the IJC was performed with a linear transducer positioned around the anterior axillary line with the shoulder 40° abducted and with neutral rotation of the glenohumeral joint (neutral position). We also measured the IJC thickness in the externally rotated and internally rotated positions with the shoulder 40° abducted. In the neutral position, as well as in the internally rotated and externally rotated positions, the thickness of the IJC on US was significantly higher in the affected shoulder than that in the unaffected shoulder (all p < 0.001). On both the affected and unaffected sides, the US thickness of the IJC in the neutral position was significantly higher than that in the externally rotated position (p < 0.001), but lower than that in the internally rotated position (p < 0.001). Regarding IJC thickness in the neutral position, a 3.2-mm cutoff value yielded the highest diagnostic accuracy for FS, with a sensitivity and specificity of 73.2% and 77.5%, respectively. The area under the curve for IJC thickness was 0.824 (95% confidence interval, 0.76–0.89). US measurement of the IJC in the neutral position yielded good diagnostic accuracy for FS. Because IJC thickness is affected by arm rotation, it is important to measure the IJC thickness in a standardized posture to ensure diagnostic value.

Abstract Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the increased temporomandibular joint (TMJ) capsular thickness, measured by ultrasound (US), is associated with the presence of effusion, diagnosed using MRI imaging.Methods. 102 patients with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders were included in the study. Each patient underwent US and MRI examination, 1 to 7 days following clinical examination. The US was performed with an 8–40 MHz linear transducer operating at 20 MHz. MRI was performed using an 1.5 T MRI device. The ROC curve was analyzed to identify the optimal cut-off value for capsular distention, which can be used as an indirect sign of TMJ effusion.Results. The capsular width values were found to be between 0.7-3.6mm. The best cut-off value was 2.05 mm with sensitivity of 55.9% and specificity of 94.7% (p<0.05). The next optimal cut-off value was 1.75 mm with sensitivity of 67.6% and specificity of 82.4%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.78 (95 % CI 0.68, 0.87). Conclusions. Ultrasound measured capsular width can be used as an indirect sign of TMJ effusion. The most accurate cut-off value obtained in this study was 2.05 mm.

La dinámica folicular ovárica monitoreada por vía transrectal (TR) y transvaginal (TV) en ondas sucesivas en llamas fue estudiada en 10 llamas con más de 4 años, multíparas, sin cría, estado corporal de 3.0, durante un periodo de 90 días en la época reproductiva. Se utilizó el ecógrafo Sonostar SS8® con un transductor lineal para el examen transrectal y transductor microconvexo endocavitario para el examen transvaginal, ambos con frecuencia de 6.5 MHz. El intervalo inter-onda fue de 20±4.4 y 22.5±5.3 por vía TR y TV, respectivamente; el número de folículos por cohorte fue 5.21±0.92 y 6.38±1.26 para TR y TV, respectivamente (p=0.0011); el diámetro máximo de folículos fue 12.49±3.57 mm para TR y 13.56±3.91 mm para TV; la tasa de crecimiento fue de 0.70±0.35 y 0.67±0.32 mm/día para TR y TV, respectivamente. La ecuación de regresión para relación del diámetro máximo folicular y duración de onda folicular vía TR fue de y=0.89766x+6.5554 (R²=0.423) y para la vía TV de y=0.8466x+10.184 (R²=0.479). La duración de las fases foliculares fue similar entre ambas técnicas con excepción de la fase de dominancia (10.2±3.19 días para TR y 8.67±2.46 para TV, p=0.0418). La relación entre el diámetro folicular y número de folículos detectados presentó una correlación negativa baja (R²=-0.0827 para TV y R²=-0.0876 para TR). En conclusión, el transductor endocavitario transvaginal permite determinar con mayor precisión las características de dinámica folicular en llamas en sus fases de reclutamiento, dominancia y regresión con sobreposición de ondas foliculares como característica importante.The ovarian follicular dynamics monitored by transrectal (TR) and transvaginal (TV) routes in successive waves was studied in 10 llamas older than 4 years, multiparous, without calves at foot, body condition of 3.0, during a period of 90 days in the reproductive season. The Sonostar SS8® ultrasound equipment was used with a linear transducer for transrectal examination and endocavitary microconvex transducer for transvaginal examination, both with a frequency of 6.5 MHz. The inter-wave interval was 20 ± 4.4 and 22.5 ± 5.3 via TR and VT, respectively; the number of follicles per cohort was 5.21 ± 0.92 and 6.38 ± 1.26 for TR and TV, respectively (p=0.0011); the maximum diameter of follicles was 12.49 ± 3.57 mm for TR and 13.56 ± 3.91 mm for TV; the growth rate was 0.70 ± 0.35 and 0.67 ± 0.32 mm/day for TR and TV, respectively. The regression equation for the ratio of the maximum follicular diameter and duration of follicular wave via TR was y=0.89766x+6.5554 (R²=0.423) and for the TV route y=0.8466x+10.184 (R²=0.479). The duration of the follicular phases was similar between both techniques except for the dominance phase (10.2±3.19 days for TR and 8.67±2.46 for TV, p=0.0418). The relationship between the follicular diameter and the number of follicles detected showed a low negative correlation (R²=-0.0827 for TV and R²=-0.0876 for TR). In conclusion, the transvaginal endocavitary transducer makes it possible to determine with greater precision the characteristics of llama follicular dynamics in their recruitment, dominance and regression phases with overlapping of follicular waves as an important characteristic.

Prostatic neoplasia (PN) occurs in 5–7% of dogs with prostatic disease, with castrated dogs having the same or higher prevalence when compared to intact dogs. Considering the promising results achieved by performing contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in intact dogs to detect PN, the present study aimed to acquire data on the prostatic perfusion pattern in neutered dogs. CEUS was performed in 64 neutered dogs, using a 5–7.5 MHz linear transducer with coded harmonic capability, dedicated analytical software, and a second-generation contrast agent, SonoVue. After B-mode evaluation was performed to assess mean prostate volume, the CEUS examination was undertaken. The flow of contrast agent was visible 10 s after injection. The subcapsular vessels were highlighted and produced rapid peripheral rim enhancement. Subsequently, the contrast agent reached the prostatic urethra via the parenchymal arterioles and gradually reached the entire prostate. Perfusion peak intensity (PPI) and time to peak (TTP) values were respectively 45.3% and 34.1 s. The measured parameters were compared with those obtained in previous studies on intact dogs with normal and with pathological patterns. In this study, CEUS showed features that may be promising for its use as a diagnostic tool for early detection of PN in neutered dogs.

We proposed a novel solution for volumetric ultrasound imaging using single-side access 3-D synthetic aperture scanning of a clinical linear array. This solution is based on an advanced scanning geometry and a software-based ultrasound platform. The rotate-translate scanning scheme increases the elevation angular aperture by pivoting the array (−45° to 45°) around its array axis (axis along the row of its elements) and then scans the imaged object for each pivoted angle by translating the array perpendicularly to the rotation axis. A theoretical basis is presented so that the angular and translational scan sampling periods can be best adjusted for any linear transducer array. We experimentally implemented scanning with a 5-MHz array. In vitro characterization was performed with phantoms designed to test resolution and contrast. Spatial resolution assessed based on the full-width half-maximum of images from isolated microspheres was increased by a factor of 3 along the translational direction from a simple translation scan of the array. Moreover, the resolution was uniform over a cross-sectional area of 4.5 cm2. Angular sampling periods were optimized and tapered to decrease the scan duration while maintaining image contrast (contrast at the center of a 5-mm cyst on the order of −26 dB for 4° angular period and a scan duration of 10 s for a 9-cm3 volume). We demonstrated that superior 3-D ultrasound imaging can be obtained with a clinical array using our scanning strategy. This technique offers a promising and flexible alternative to development of costly matrix arrays toward the development of sensitive volumetric ultrasonography.
