Electrokinetics methods have attracted increasing interest to characterize hydrogeological processes in geological media, especially in complex hydrosystems such as fractured formations. In this work, we conceptualize fractured media as a bunch of parallel capillary fractures following the fractal size distribution. This conceptualization permits to obtain analytical models for both the electrical conductivity and the electrokinetic coupling in water saturated fractured media. We explore two different approaches to express the electrokinetic coupling. First, we express the streaming potential coupling coefficient as a function of the zeta potential and then we obtain the effective charge density in terms of macroscopic hydraulic and electrokinetic parameters of porous media. We show that when the surface electrical conductivity is negligible, the proposed models reduces to the previously proposed one based on a bundle of cylindrical capillaries. This model opens up a wide range of applications to monitor the water flow in fractured media.

The electrical properties of silicone composite films filled with silver (Ag) nanoparticle-decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) prepared by solution processing are investigated. Pristine MWNT is oxidized and converted to the acyl chloride-functionalized MWNT using thionyl chloride, which is subsequently reacted with amine-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (APDMS). Thereafter, APDMS-modified MWNT are decorated with Ag nanoparticles and then reacted with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) solution to form Ag-decorated MWNT silicone (Ag-decorated MWNT-APDMS/Silicone) composite. The morphological differences of the silicone composites containing Ag-decorated MWNT and APDMS-modified MWNT are observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the surface conductivities are measured by the four-probe method. Ag-decorated MWNT-APDMS/Silicone composite films show higher surface electrical conductivity than MWNT/silicone composite films. This shows that the electrical properties of Ag-decorated MWNT-APDMS/silicone composite films can be improved by the surface modification of MWNT with APDMS and Ag nanoparticles, thereby expanding their applications.

The present work has investigated the effects of tin doping on morphological and optical-electrical properties of zinc oxide films produced by spray-pyrolysis technique. The films exhibited droplet impact marks along the surface. Top-view micrographs disclosed black clusters of non-decomposed salts after tin doing. These morphological aspects have not compromised optical performance although they may have contributed to the rise in electrical resistivity due to charge scattering on the surface. Electrical conductivity was lowered as tin-doping concentration increased. Tin ions occupied interstitial sites in the host matrix and acted as conventional defects. The film transmittance at 550 nm was not significantly affected by tin doping, yet a slight loss in transparency was observed after 1 at. % Sn doping. Optical bandgap was reduced from 3.25 to 3.16 eV due to deep states when doping with 1 at. % Sn. The optical bandgap widened to 3.23 eV with incorporation of 2 at. % Sn. This behaviour is attributed to the Burstein-Moss effect.

The influence of manufacturing parameters of filament extrusion and extrusion-based Additive Manufacturing (AM), as well as different post processing techniques, on the electrical conductivity of 3D printed parts of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP)-reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) has been analyzed. The key role of the manufacturing parameters to obtain electrically conductive filaments and 3D printed parts has been demonstrated. Results have shown that an increase in extrusion speed, as well as lower land lengths, induces higher extrudate swelling, with the consequent reduction of the electrical conductivity. Additionally, filaments with lower diameter values, which result in a higher surface-to-cross-section ratio, have considerably lower electrical conductivities. These factors tune the values of the volume and surface electrical conductivity between 10−4–100 S/m and 10−8–10−3 S/sq, respectively. The volume and surface electrical conductivity considerably diminished after 3D printing. They increased when using higher printing layer thickness and width and were ranging between 10−7–10−4 S/m and 10−8–10−5 S/sq, respectively. This is attributed to the higher cross section area of the individual printed lines. The effect of different post processing (acetone vapor polishing, plasma and neosanding, which is a novel finishing process) on 3D printed parts in morphology and surface electrical conductivity was also analyzed.

In this paper, we reported on environmental technique of developing for the deposition of silver nanoparticles onto polyamide (PA) fibers. A new composite PA yarn with carboxyl methyl starch (CMS) including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been synthesized. The influence of silver nitrate concentration on the morphological and spectrophometeric properties was investigated. SEM images showed the distribution of silver nanoparticles and nanolayer formation on the surface. Electrical conductivity of composite yarns was measured by four point probe technique and was changed from 1.574x10-7 to 2.630x10-4 S/cm. The antibacterial activities of the composite yarns have been investigated against Escherichia coli and determined considerable antibacterial properties.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of AISI 430 stainless steel (430 SS) as bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), a protective Nb-modified layer is formed onto stainless steel via the plasma surface diffusion alloying method. The effect of diffusion alloying time on electrochemical behavior and surface conductivity is evaluated. Design/methodology/approach In this work, the surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of modified specimen are evaluated by the potentiodynamic and potentionstatic polarization tests. Moreover, the hydrophobicity is also investigated by contact angle measurement. Findings The Nb-modified 430 SS treated by 1.5 h (1.5Nb) presented a lower passivation current density, lower interfacial contact resistance and a higher hydrophobicity than other modified specimens. Moreover, the 1.5 Nb specimen presents a smoother surface than other modified specimens after potentionstatic polarization tests. Originality/value The effect of diffusion alloying time on electrochemical behavior, surface conductivity and hydrophobicity of modified specimen is evaluated. The probable anti-corrosion mechanism of Nb-modified specimen in simulated acid PEMFC cathode environment is presented.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to improve the surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of AISI430 stainless steel (430 SS) as bipolar plates for direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC). Design/methodology/approach The niobium diffusion layers have been successfully synthesized on 430 SS substrate by the plasma surface diffusion alloying technique under different diffusion alloying time. Findings The surface morphology of Nb-modified 430 SS prepared under the diffusion alloying time of 2 h is more homogeneous, relatively sleek and compact without surface micropore and other common surface blemishes. The potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarization measurements manifest that Nb-modified 430 SS prepared under the diffusion alloying time of 2 h enormously ameliorate the corrosion resistance of bare 430 SS compared with other Nb-modified 430 SS samples and its corrosion current density is maintained at −1.4 µA cm−2 in simulated anodic environment of DFAFC (0.05 M H2SO4 + 2 ppm HF + 10 M formic acid at 50 °C). Originality/value The effect of diffusion alloying time on the corrosion resistance and surface conductivity of Nb-modified 430 SS has been carefully studied. The Nb-modified 430 SS samples prepared at the diffusion alloying time of 2 h have the best surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance in the simulated anodic environment of DFAFC.
