In this review we provide a discussion of the concept of alternatives and its role in linguistic and psycholinguistic theorizing in the context of the contributions that have appeared in the Frontiers Research Topic The Role of Alternatives in Language. We are discussing the linguistic phenomena for which alternatives have been argued to play a paramount role: negation, counterfactual sentences, scalar implicatures and exhaustivity, focus, contrastive topics, and sentences with bare plurals and with definite plurals. We review in how far alternatives are relevant for these phenomena and how this relevance has been captured by theoretical linguistic accounts. Regarding processing, we discuss the mental activation of alternatives: its mandatory vs. optional nature, its time course. We also address the methodological issue of how experimental studies operationalize alternatives. Finally, we explore the phenomenon of individual variation, which increasingly attracts attention in linguistics. In sum, this review gives an inclusive and broad discussion of alternatives by bringing together different research strands whose findings and theoretical proposals can advance our knowledge of alternatives in inspiring cross-fertilization.

The paper presents an empirical study conducted among students during the first wave of self-isolation in May-June 2020. The study aims to identify specific features of a psycho-emotional state in students in the context of distance learning during self-isolation. The research objectives are to study the effect of forced self-isolation on the psycho-emotional state of an individual; determine characteristics of a psycho-emotional state of students, and establish a connection between mental states and the experience of loneliness in students. Materials and methods. Ascertaining experiment was used as the main method. The sample consisted of fifty-five students aged between 19 and 22. The study was conducted in a virtual interaction mode. The results were statistically processed using Kendall’s rank correlation coefficient and r-Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Research results. The findings indicate the features of the psycho-emotional state in students during distance learning in self-isolation; establish the presence of a direct negative relation between the experience of loneliness and the level of mental activation and interest of students, as well as a direct positive connection with anxiety, frustration, and obsessive states. Conclusion. The research results expand the scientific understanding of the psycho-emotional states of student youth; contribute to the improvement in methods of regulating the psycho-emotional states in university students; can be used to develop programs for psycho-prophylaxis, psycho-correction, and psycho-pedagogical support of students forced to self-isolate due to prolonged illness, special health opportunities, or the transition to distance education. Keyword: psycho-emotional state, mental states, students, distance learning, self-isolation, restrictive measures

Owing to work intensification and an accelerated pace of life in general, individuals in many Western countries are often overactivated and find it difficult to switch off. However, recovery from physiological and mental activation is critical to prevent stress symptoms and maintain one’s physiological and mental well-being. Extensive research evidence indicates that Qigong, a traditional Chinese movement practice for promoting health, provides an effective means to recover from work and off-work demands. The main objective of this paper is to offer a comprehensive, narrative review of the effects of Qigong and its core components. Attention is first paid to the outcomes of work and off-work demands and stress, and the role of recovery for individuals’ well-being. Then, Qigong and its components are explained, followed by the results of scientific research. Finally, limitations and implications for research and practiced are discussed.

The problem of psychological assistance to the elderly continues to be relevant due to the peculiarities of the personal sphere and mental processes in patients of this age group. When providing medical and social assistance to an elderly patient, psychological support is required, which allows for more effective rehabilitation measures. The purpose of this work is to present modern approaches to psychological care that contribute to the long-term activation of mental activity of elderly patients. The results of the empirical study revealed violations of the dynamic and regulatory nature of all components of mental activity, emotional and volitional disorders in most patients. Therefore, normalization of indicators of mental processes in participants is a necessary condition for positive dynamics of changes in mental processes. Psychological assistance activities in a gerontology center allow you to use a variety of methods and tools that can help activate the mental activity of older people. As a rule, this effect is carried out only in the conditions of the gerontology center and is not long-term. Consequently, the activation of mental activity of elderly patients, achieved by specialists of the institution, may begin to decrease when the patient is discharged. In this regard, the institution introduces innovative forms of psychological and pedagogical influence, which allow the patient to be involved in prolonged projects, in which he can participate after discharge from the institution. The novelty of the work consists in the introduction of a long-term psychological and pedagogical project "Ecoletie", the purpose of which is to implement measures aimed at activating the mental activity of patients by increasing the level of their environmental culture and introducing environmental practices in the further daily activities of the elderly.

Research has shown that the mental activation of concepts related to supernatural agents (e.g., God, ghost) is capable of altering one’s moral behaviours. Based on the supernatural monitoring hypothesis, two experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of priming on cheating behaviour using undergraduate participants from Singapore. The results of the first experiment showed that participants who were primed with the concepts of God and ghost via a word-scramble task cheated less in a mathematical task than participants exposed to neutral primes. The second experiment showed that the activation of God and ghost concepts via a supraliminal priming method reduced the participants’ cheating in a riddle game, even when the participants were informed that they would be rewarded monetarily for correctly answering the riddles. The results suggested that the mental activation of supernatural agents could reduce cheating behaviour regardless of the presence or absence of explicit belief in supernatural agents.

The problem of mitigating stress in the companies gains more relevance, since the amount of complex, problematic situations, changes in external environment significantly increases and impacts performance of the employees and competitiveness of the company. Middle-ranking managers experience severe stress. The complexity of mitigating stress is substantiated by the need for individual approach, which is would change the overall attitude towards a stressful situation. It is also a resource-consuming process from the perspective of time and finances. The optimal method in this regards is the visualization technique, which allows each participant to work through “their personal stress” even in a group format. Examination of visualization as a form of working with the cognitive construct “stress” has proven its effectiveness: the respondents began experiencing less stress, and thus les frustration, anxiety, aggressiveness, and more mental activation, interest, and comfort. The overall attitude towards stress has also changed: it ceased to cause fear, anxiety and negative emotions. It has also become easier for the respondents to handle stress that cannot be omitted. Visualization of the cognitive construct “stress” allowed inscribing in into the internal worldview as a safer one. All of the above resulted in improvement of the work performance, optimization of relations between management and employees. The novelty consists in proving the efficiency of visualization technique for working through negative cognitive constructs in the context of personnel training.
