Abstract Effects of erosion phenomenon on the performance of a given gun barrel have been analyzed throughout numerical and experimental studies. Mainly, qualitative observations were performed. Theoretical relations between the evolution of the inner barrel profile and the provided interior ballistics are limited. This paper focuses on the development of a numerical model to predict the engraving resistance evolution in terms of the inner barrel profile in the different weapon's life stages. Four test barrels "12.7x99mm NATO" with different chamber volumes were considered. First, a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with a contact scanning probe was used to measure the inner dimension of the guns. Second, piezoelectric sensors with a special doppler radar were considered to measure the (i) pressure and (ii) the bullet velocity in the test weapons. Finally, based on the obtained experimental results, a Finite Element (FE) analysis using the commercial software LS-DYNA was developed and validated. The obtained numerical results were used as insights to quantify the relationship between the engraving resistance and the chamber volume of small caliber guns.

This paper presents a simulation of a bullet impact on a plate made of a homogeneous and isotropic material. The developed model takes into account the yield and fracture limits of both involved materials for the bullet and the plate one. The model was developed with the help of Ansys 14.0 and could be used to establish a theoretical value of the plate thickness that will offer protection to the bullet penetration in order to minimize the number of laboratory tests for evaluating the plate resistance. The authors presented the influence of impact velocity of the bullet. The bullet velocity just reaching the plate is an essential parameter influencing the plate integrity. Also, the authors established a correlation between the evolution of the theoretical maximum von Mises stresses and the stages taking place during the impact.

There is controversy regarding the causes of temporary cavity generation during gunshot wound formation. Analysis of gunshot wounds in hunted animals suggests that a bullet’s frontal surface shape is the primary factor in forming a temporary pulsating cavity, and that cavity size is not directly affected by bullet velocity.

According to the structural characteristics of the multi-channel high-low pressure micro-ejection system, this paper sets up mathematical model of the trajectory based on the classical trajectory theory, makes numerical analysis to prove the rationality of the structural design, tests the pressure and bullet velocity of the launching system. The results show that the analysis and design methods of the multi-channel high-low pressure micro-ejection system are reasonable and reliable.
