In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the hole expansion ratio (HER) using an integrated analysis system. To precisely measure the HER, three kinds of analysis methods (computer vision, punch load, and acoustic emission) were utilized to detect edge cracks during a hole expansion test. Cracks can be recognized by employing both computer vision and a punch load analysis system to determine the moment of crack initiation. However, the acoustic emission analysis system has difficulty detecting the instant of crack appearance since the magnitude of the audio signal is drowned out by noise from the press, which interrupts the differentiation of crack configuration. To enhance the accuracy for determining the HER, an integrated analysis system that combines computer vision with punch load analysis, and improves on the shortcomings of each analysis system, is newly suggested.

Variant pairs have an indispensable function on mechanical properties such as low impact toughness. Therefore, it was assumed that they would also affect the HER (Hole Expansion Ratio, an indicator to evaluate stretch flanging performance). To clarify this, a comprehensive analysis of the common influential factors in an 800 MPa grade low carbon micro-alloyed steel, i.e., the retained austenite, the M/A (Martensite/Austenite) island, the titanium precipitations, the grain diameter, the density of high angle grain boundaries and the textures, was first conducted. It was found that they did not match well with the HER, suggesting that they were not the governing factor for HER in this steel. However, the dominating crystallography groups and the variant pairing results indicated that they fitted well with the HER. In the samples with high HERs, the CP (Close Packed) groups dominated the transformation, wherein one individual CP group consisted of two or more Bain groups, whereas it evolved into the domination of joint CP groups and Bain groups for the low HER sample. Further analysis on the variant pairing features indicated that a correlation occurred between the HER and the high angle variant pairs. In the steels with high HERs, high-angle variant pairs of V1/V2, V1/V3 that transformed from the same CP group, particularly of V1/V2 pair, were mostly generated. They turned to V1/V9, V1/V10, V1/V12, V1/V15, V1/V17, and V1/V18 pairs from differential CP groups, especially the V1/V12 and V1/V15 pair for low-HER steel. This result showed that V1/V2, V1/V12, and V1/V15 might have accounted most for the HER in this steel. The underlying reason was that the V1/V2 pair was specialized in supplying a slip passage for dislocation transmission across a grain boundary with little resistance, whereas the dislocation transmission ability for V1/V12 and V1/V15 pair was particularly poor. Thus, to efficiently enhance the HER, one should regulate the variant pairs by augmenting the V1/V2 fraction and suppressing the formation of the V1/V12 and V1/V15 pair.

Automotive steels with ultra-high strength and low alloy content under different heating and cooling processes were investigated. It was shown that those processes exhibited a great influence on the performance of the investigated steels due to the different auto-tempering effects. Compared with the steels under water quenching, there was approximately a 70% increase in the strength and elongation of steels under air cooling, in which the martensite was well-tempered. Although the elongation of the steel with a microstructure composed of ferrite, well-tempered martensite and less-tempered martensite could exceed 15%, the hole expansion ratio was still lower because of the undesirable hardness distribution between the hard phases and the soft phases. It followed from the calculation results based on SEM, TEM and XRD analyses, that for the steel under air cooling, the strengthening mechanism was dominated by the solid solution strengthening and the elongation was determined by the auto-tempering of martensite. Experiments and analyses aimed to explore the strengthening and plasticity mechanisms of auto-tempering steels under the special process of flash heating.

The hole expansion ratio (HER) is an important material property which defines the extent of edge formability of sheet metals. The stress states observed at the hole edge after the hole expansion test are similar to those seen during traditional uniaxial tensile deformation. This observation has provoked research, directed at ascertaining a correlation between the HER and tensile properties. In order to account for the forming behaviour of complex materials like titanium, a highly robust model that takes into account the material formability in all sheet-processing directions must be considered. The R programming language was used in this research to build a model fitting expression capable of predicting the HER as well as generating a regression model equation for titanium alloys, based on their thickness and Erichsen index number. The proposed regression model equation for predicting HER of titanium alloys exhibited an excellent statistical significance (p= 0.00076), indicating the robustness of the model fitting expression to predict HER values of titanium alloys. An accompanying adjusted R squared value of 0.9987 for the generated regression model equation also shows how well the regression line fits the data for accurate prediction of the HER of titanium alloys. A numerical validation analysis of the strength of the relationship derived between the predicted and the experimental HERs gave a correlation coefficient of 0.9884. This result shows a strong linear relationship between the experimental and predicted HER values of the titanium alloys with an average absolute error of 8.8%.

This work investigated the microstructural effect on stretch flangeability of ferrite–martensite dual-phase (DP) steels. Three types of DP steels with various martensitic structures were prepared for the research: fibrous martensite in water-quenched (WQ) sample, chained martensite in air-quenched (AQ) sample, and coarse martensite in step-quenched (SQ) sample. The WQ specimen exhibited the highest mechanical strength and hole expansion ratio compared to the AQ and SQ samples despite their similar fraction of martensite. Such a result was explained in view of uniform distribution of fine martensite and high density of geometrically necessary dislocations in the WQ specimen. Meanwhile, most cracks initiated at either rolling or transverse direction during the stretch flangeability test regardless of the martensitic morphology. It was attributed to the highest average normal anisotropy in the direction of 45° to rolling direction.

This study presents the design and development of a hot-rolled bainitic steel, presenting a good combination of strength and stretch-flangeability, for automotive applications. Ti, Nb, and Mo were added in the steel composition in order to control austenite grain sizes, enhance precipitation hardening, and promote the formation of bainite. This study focuses on the effect of process parameters on final microstructures and mechanical properties. These parameters are the finishing rolling temperature, which conditions the austenite microstructure before its decomposition, and the coiling temperature, which conditions the nature and morphology of the ferritic phases transformed. A preliminary study allowed to determine the austenite grain growth behavior during reheating, the recrystallization kinetics, and the continuous cooling transformation curves of the studied steel. Then, a first set of parameters was tested at a semi-industrial scale, which confirmed that the best elongation properties were obtained for homogeneous bainitic lath/granular microstructures, that can be produced by choosing a coiling temperature of 500 ∘ C . When choosing those parameters for the final industrial trial, the microstructure obtained consisted of a homogeneous lath/granular bainite mixture that presented a Ultimate Tensile Strength of 830 MPa and a Hole Expansion Ratio exceeding 70%.
