AbstractWe investigate the collective mode response of the iron-based superconductor Ba1−xKxFe2As2 using intense terahertz (THz) light. In the superconducting state a THz Kerr signal is observed and assigned to nonlinear THz coupling to superconducting degrees of freedom. The polarization dependence of the THz Kerr signal is remarkably sensitive to the coexistence of a nematic order. In the absence of nematic order the C4 symmetric polarization dependence of the THz Kerr signal is consistent with a coupling to the Higgs amplitude mode of the superconducting condensate. In the coexisting nematic and superconducting state the signal becomes purely nematic with a vanishing C4 symmetric component, signaling the emergence of a superconducting collective mode activated by nematicity.

In this work, we review the most important achievements of INESC TEC related to the properties and applications of arc-induced long-period fiber gratings. The polarization dependence loss, the spectral behavior at temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 1200 °C and under exposure to ultraviolet and gamma radiation is described. The dependence of gratings sensitivity on the fabrication parameters is discussed. Several applications in optical communications and sensing domains are referred.

The phase delays introduced by anisotropic nanounits include propagation phase delay, resonant phase delay and geometric phase delay. Various phase devices can be formed based on the metasurfaces consisting of anisotropic nanounits and the phase devices of the same kind function have different performances because of different working modes. In this paper, metalenses and vortex metalenses are chosen as examples to compare the optical performance of metasurface phase devices based on three kinds of phase compensation techniques. We design separately three kinds of metalenses and vortex metalenses using the cross nanoholes, L-shaped nanohole and V-shaped nanoholes and simulate numerically their intensity and phase distributions. Additionally, the results show the differences among these elements in structure complexity, polarization dependence, working efficiency and phase uniformity. The comparison for three kinds of metalenses clearly shows the merits of different phase compensation techniques and this work must be helpful for expanding the practical applications of metasurfaces.

High order phenomena in the visible range and with polarization dependence in the ultraviolet (UV) region of the microphotoluminescence (micro-PL) spectrum in whispering-gallery mode (WGM) ZnO microrod cavity have been thoroughly studied at room temperature. WGM ZnO microrod cavity with good crystallinity is produced by the CVD growth method, and the ZnO microrod structures are characterized by structural and optical methods. Through the micro-PL spectrum measurement of the ZnO microrod, it is found that high-order resonance peaks appeared in the visible region. The different polarization conditions can be adjusted by rotating the angles of the polarizer, and it is proved that the micro-PL spectrum has strong polarization-dependent behavior in the UV region. Our results imply broad application potentials in the study of ZnO microrod-based photonic cavity devices.

Changing the morphology of noble metal nanoparticles and polarization dependence of nanoparticles with different morphologies is an important part of further research on surface plasma enhancement. Therefore, we used the method based on Matlab simulation to provide a simple and effective method for preparing the morphologies of Au nanoparticles with different morphologies, and prepared the structure of Au nanoparticles with good uniformity and different morphologies by oblique angle deposition (OAD) technology. The change of the surface morphology of nanoparticles from spherical to square to diamond can be effectively controlled by changing the deposition angle. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method was used to simulate the electromagnetic fields of Au nanoparticles with different morphologies to explore the polarization dependence of nanoparticles with different shapes, which was in good agreement with Raman spectrum.
