Metabolic syndrome and related complications are a major challenge for health providers of present era. Metabolic syndrome with key characters of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia are the outcomes of faulty diet and habits. Since there are no such pharmacological agents which can reverse this condition more importance is being given to diet and lifestyle modifications. Traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda gives equal importance for food and nutrition in both health and diseased conditions. Concept of Pathya -apathya for each and every disease is unique to Ayurveda where the macro and micronutrient principles were selected rationally for each disease conditions. These very principles can be adopted along with dietary supplements for curbing modern lifestyle disorders, more over there is mentioning of similar conditions in classics under a board term of Santharpanajanya Vikaras. Materials and methods- Thorough literary search done on various classical Ayurvedic texts for various diet and dietary preparations and online bases for their pharmacological properties from Ayurvedic and modern perspective and enlisted the dietary supplements. Results- Selected three major ingredients for the macro nutrient principles carbohydrate, protein and fat suggestive for MS from Sthoulya Prakarana and their properties are critically reviewed. Conclusion- There is enough scope of research in Ayurvedic dietary supplements for obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

Abstract Background In the current study, we aimed to investigate the association of dietary inflammation scores (DIS) and lifestyle inflammation scores (LIS) with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a prospective population-based study. Methods A total of 1625 participants without MetS were recruited from among participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study(2006–2008) and followed a mean of 6.1 years. Dietary data of subjects were collected using a food frequency questionnaire at baseline to determine LIS and DIS. Multivariable logistic regression models, were used to calculate the odds ratio (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) of MetS across tertiles of DIS and LIS. Results Mean ± SD age of individuals (45.8 % men) was 37.5 ± 13.4 years. Median (25–75 interquartile range) DIS and LIS for all participants was 0.80 (− 2.94, 3.64) and 0.48 (− 0.18, − 0.89), respectively. During the study follow-up, 291 (17.9 %) new cases of MetS were identified. Based on the age and sex-adjusted model, a positive association was found between LIS (OR = 7.56; 95% CI 5.10–11.22, P for trend < 0.001) and risk of MetS, however, the association of DIS and risk of MetS development was not statistically significant (OR = 1.30;95% CI 0.93–1.80, P for trend = 0.127). In the multivariable model, after adjustment for confounding variables, including age, sex, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, and energy intake, the risk of MetS is increased across tertiles of DIS (OR = 1.59; 95% CI 1.09–2.33, P for trend = 0.015) and LIS(OR = 8.38; 95% CI 5.51–12.7, P for trend < 0.001). Conclusions The findings of the current study showed that greater adherence to LIS and DIS, determined to indicate the inflammatory potential of diet and lifestyle, are associated with increased the risk of MetS.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) are two different entities sharing common clinical and physio-pathological features, with insulin resistance (IR) as the most relevant. Large evidence leads to consider it as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, regardless of age, sex, smoking habit, cholesterolemia, and other elements of MS. Therapeutic strategies remain still unclear, but lifestyle modifications (diet, physical exercise, and weight loss) determine an improvement in IR, MS, and both clinical and histologic liver picture. NAFLD and IR are bidirectionally correlated and, consequently, the development of pre-diabetes and diabetes is the most direct consequence at the extrahepatic level. In turn, type 2 diabetes is a well-known risk factor for multiorgan damage, including an involvement of cardiovascular system, kidney and peripheral nervous system. The increased MS incidence worldwide, above all due to changes in diet and lifestyle, is associated with an equally significant increase in NAFLD, with a subsequent rise in both morbidity and mortality due to both metabolic, hepatic and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the slowdown in the increase of the “bad company” constituted by MS and NAFLD, with all the consequent direct and indirect costs, represents one of the main challenges for the National Health Systems.

Abstract Objectives Research suggests birth control (BC) use alters blood lipids in women. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in metabolic syndrome risk between birth control users vs. nonusers in a sample of female college students, 18–24 years old. Methods Data were collected between 2005–18 from the College Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey, an ongoing, cross-sectional study conducted at a midsized, northeastern university. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical measures were obtained in the fasted state and used to determine metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence. BC use was self-reported. Proportional differences between BC vs. non-BC users of MetS and individual MetS components were evaluated via chi-square tests. Results Forty-five % of the final sample (n = 6456) reported using BC. MetS (≥3 MetS criteria) was present in 3.9% of students; 16.7% of students had ≥ 2 MetS criteria. BC users vs. nonusers were more likely to have at-risk triglyceride levels (22.4 vs. 11.0%, P &lt; .001) but less likely to have at-risk HDL levels (21.2 vs. 27.7%, P &lt; .001) and abdominal obesity (14.3% vs. 16.4, P &lt; .05). No significant differences were observed in prevalence of elevated blood pressure or glucose between BC users vs. nonusers. Overall, MetS prevalence did not differ between groups (3.8 vs. 3.9%, P = .85). Conclusions Our findings suggest BC use is common and impacts different MetS criteria in college females. College health providers and nutrition educators can utilize research findings to tailor information for female students at risk for MetS and chronic disease. Objective: To report a case of hypertension secondary to ingestion of licorice root tea. Case Summary: A 46-year-old African American female with newly diagnosed stage 1 hypertension presented with a blood pressure measurement of 144/81 mm Hg and a reduced plasma potassium level of 3.2 mEq/L. The patient attempted lifestyle modifications prior to initiating an antihypertensive agent, but at a follow-up appointment, her blood pressure remained elevated. A current laboratory panel revealed a depressed morning plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) of 5 ng/dL and low morning plasma renin activity (PRA) of 0.13 ng/mL/h. Later it was revealed that the patient regularly (1–2 cups/day) consumed “Yogi Calming” tea, a blend of herbs, including licorice root. The patient was advised to discontinue consumption of the herbal tea, and at a subsequent appointment, her blood pressure was 128/73 mm Hg and her laboratory panel had improved, including serum potassium concentration of 4.1 mEq/L, PAC of 6 ng/dL, and PRA of 0.19 ng/mL/h. Discussion: Excessive consumption of licorice has been well documented to cause pseudohyperaldosteronism, characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia, and suppressed plasma renin and aldosterone levels. Glycyrrhizin, the active ingredient in licorice, inhibits 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2, an oxidase responsible for the conversion and inactivation of cortisol to cortisone. Chronic ingestion of licorice-containing foods has been demonstrated to cause pseudohyperaldosteronism. These include soft candies, lozenges, and dietary supplements, but licorice-containing teas have been infrequently described. Based on the Naranjo probability score, our patient's hypertension appears to have been a probable licorice-induced reaction secondary to a licorice-containing tea. Conclusions: Herbal and dietary supplements are frequently consumed by patients without full knowledge of the contents of the products or the impact on their health. In clinical practice, when hypertension is accompanied by hypokalemia and reduced PRA and PAC, licorice consumption should be investigated and causal hypertension ruled out.

The term Metabolic Syndrome (MS) has been used since its introduction in 2001 by the National Cholesterol Program (NCEP: ATP III). The concept has been discussed in the scientific literature for decades. The X Syndrome and other terms such as &quot;death quartet&quot; and insulin resistance syndrome have been used to describe the association between metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors. In Mexico, the prevalence of MS in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición, ENSANUT) was 34% in 2000 and 41% in 2012. Lifestyle modifications along with increased physical activity, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption are essential for management and prevention because they play a central role in metabolic abnormalities. However, despite the large amount of medications available for diabetes, up to 50% of patients have been reported to fail to achieve adequate control goals, as defined by the American Diabetes Association (glycosylated hemoglobin &lt;7%). In contrast, bariatric surgery (BS) has clearly confirmed that it contributes to improved beta cell function in patients with BMI &gt; 35 kg / m 2 , as well as control of dyslipidemia and other metabolic disorders. Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of risk factors that has the potential of developing into cardiovascular disease or increase the susceptibility to it. It is present worldwide with now even developing countries getting overwhelmed by its burden. With a shift towards unhealthy diet coupled with sedentary lifestyle, development of metabolic syndrome is on the rise even among young adults. One of the main causes of this problem is faulty diet, so any means to reduce the incidence of the syndrome involves the modification of the existing diets rich in saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. This review focusses on efficacy of different dietary patterns for combating the syndrome along with other lifestyle risk factors. It also highlights newer advancements in the field of Metabolic Syndrome, which can serve as potential strategies to combat it. Public health interventions targeting adults, therefore, should center on prevention through education, modification of diet and lifestyle, and focusing on environment, so that these changes are acceptable and sustainable.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a combination of physiologically dysregulated parameters that can include elevated fasting blood glucose, high blood pressure, central obesity, increased triglyceride levels, insulin resistance, diabetes, elevated low density lipoprotein levels, and reduced high density lipoprotein levels in the blood. Effective clinical management of MetS is critical as it is strongly associated with long lasting and fatal complications in patients. Alongside standard care of lifestyle changes and medication, dietary supplements derived from herbal resources could be an alternative therapeutic strategy that is safe, efficient, culturally acceptable, and has few side effects. Of the dietary supplements, spicy foods have always been considered a great source of functional bioactive compounds. Herbal therapy is broadly used in many countries as a treatment or as a preventive measure in the management of MetS risk factors, including blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels. Herein, an attempt is made to evaluate the recent studies in the management of MetS with herbal alternatives, and to explore the possibility of their use as therapeutic treatments or supplements.
