Time evolving networks tend to have an element of regularity. This regularity is characterized by existence of repetitive patterns in the data sequences of the graph metrics. As per our research, the relevance of such regular patterns to the network has not been adequately explored. Such patterns in certain data sequences are indicative of properties like popularity, activeness etc. which are of vital significance for any network. These properties are closely indicated by data sequences of graph metrics - degree prestige, degree centrality and occurrence. In this paper, (a) an improved mining algorithm has been used to extract regular patterns in these sequences, and (b) a methodology has been proposed to quantitatively analyse the behavior of the obtained patterns. To analyze this behavior, a quantification measure coined as "Sumscore" has been defined to compare the relative significance of such patterns. The patterns are ranked according to their Sumscores and insights are then drawn upon it. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated by experiments on two real world datasets.

Abstract The aim of the current paper is to reinterpret some results of two previous studies on the mastery of figurative expressions from the perspective of usage-based linguistics. The reanalysis aims to shed more light on the learning and use of figurative language by multilingual students by exploring the complex interplay of linguistic creativity, expressivity, and conventionality in figurative expressions. The reinterpretation shows that many of the examples that were previously categorized as novel figurative expressions used in students’ writing, can be analyzed as instances of regular patterns, i.e. constructions, with certain lexical idiosyncrasies. Modifications of conventionalized figurative expressions are discussed and reinterpreted in terms of strength of entrenchment of links between form and meaning within certain constructions or links between constructions and conventionalized pragmatic information in the multilinguals’ mental construction. Implications for the treatment of Swedish figurative expressions in the second language class room are, in line with previous research, that focusing on regularity might reduce unpredictability, often seen as the core difficulty in the learning of such expressions in an L2. The paper also offers some directions for further investigation of the socio-cognitive processes involved in the learning of figurative language in an additional language.

Abstract Previous research on the acquisition of grammatical gender has shown that this property is acquired early in transparent gender systems such as Russian. However, it is not clear to what extent children are sensitive to the assignment cues and to what extent they simply memorize correspondences between frequent lexical items. Furthermore, we do not know if bilingual children are different from monolingual children in this respect. This article reports on a study investigating bilingual children’s sensitivity to gender assignment cues in Russian. A group of 64 bilingual German–Russian children living in Germany participated in the study, as well as 107 monolingual controls in Russia. The elicitation experiments used both real and nonce words, as well as noun phrases with mismatched cues (where the morphophonological shape of the noun cued one gender and the agreement on the modifying adjective another). The results show that both bilinguals and monolinguals are highly sensitive to cues, both to the frequent transparent cues and to more fine-grained gender regularities in situations where there is ambiguity. There is also an age effect, showing that younger children pay more attention to the cue on the noun itself, thus displaying a preference for regular patterns, while older children are more sensitive to gender agreement on other targets.

Ethnic entrepreneurship is a set of connections and regular patterns of interaction between people from the same background who migrate to carry out entrepreneurial activities in a particular region or country. This study aims to explore ethnic entrepreneurship in Banjarmasin. The results of this study explain that ethnic entrepreneurship and personality do not contribute significantly in increasing the sustainability of MSMEs in wetlands (Madurese ethnic traders). Entrepreneurship and personality do not contribute significantly in realizing business sustainability because ethnic entrepreneurship is an entrepreneurial mindset that is inherent in individual life.

AbstractCells can position multiple copies of components like carboxysomes, nucleoids, and nuclei at regular intervals. By controlling positions, cells, for example, ensure equal partitioning of organelles over daughter cells and, in the case of nuclei, control cell sizes during cellularization. Mechanisms that generate regular patterns are as yet poorly understood. We used fission yeast cell cycle mutants to investigate the dispersion of multiple nuclei by microtubule-generated forces in single cells. After removing internuclear attractive forces by microtubule-based molecular motors, we observed the establishment of regular patterns of nuclei. Based on live-cell imaging, we hypothesized that microtubule growth within internuclear spaces pushes neighbouring nuclei apart. In the proposed mechanism, which was validated by stochastic simulations, the repulsive force weakens with increasing separation because stochastic shortening events limit the extent over which microtubules generate forces. Our results, therefore, demonstrate how cells can exploit the dynamics of microtubule growth for the equidistant positioning of organelles.

Tessellations emerge in many natural systems, and the constituent domains often contain regular patterns, raising the intriguing possibility that pattern formation within adjacent domains might be correlated by the geometry, without the direct exchange of information between parts comprising either domain. We confirm this paradoxical effect, by simulating pattern formation via reaction-diffusion in domains whose boundary shapes tessellate, and showing that correlations between adjacent patterns are strong compared to controls that self-organise in domains with equivalent sizes but unrelated shapes. The effect holds in systems with linear and non-linear diffusive terms, and for boundary shapes derived from regular and irregular tessellations. Based on the prediction that correlations between adjacent patterns should be bimodally distributed, we develop methods for testing whether a given set of domain boundaries constrained pattern formation within those domains. We then confirm such a prediction by analysing the development of `subbarrel' patterns, which are thought to emerge via reaction-diffusion, and whose enclosing borders form a Voronoi tessellation on the surface of the rodent somatosensory cortex. In more general terms, this result demonstrates how causal links can be established between the dynamical processes through which biological patterns emerge and the constraints that shape them.

The ability to navigate safely and efficiently through a given landscape is relevant for any intelligent moving object. Examples range from robotic science and traffic analysis, to the behavior within an ecosystem. Many objects tend to move in patterns depending on their nature. By establishing models of patterns of motion one may estimate the future motion within an area. We propose here a method for detecting regular patterns of motion by modeling the environment as an energy landscape, and locating optimal paths through it. As an example, we use maritime position Automatic Identification System (AIS) data as input to work out optimal routes between different start and end points when these are not located along the standard shipping lanes. These initial tests show that the method has potential for analyzing and determining regular patterns of motion.

Real-time monitoring of the economy is based on activity indicators that show regular patterns such as trends, seasonality and business cycles. However, parametric and non-parametric methods for signal extraction produce revisions at the end of the sample, and the arrival of new data makes it difficult to assess the state of the economy. In this paper, we compare two signal extraction procedures: Circulant Singular Spectral Analysis, CiSSA, a non-parametric technique in which we can extract components associated with desired frequencies, and a parametric method based on ARIMA modelling. Through a set of simulations, we show that the magnitude of the revisions produced by CiSSA converges to zero quicker, and it is smaller than that of the alternative procedure.

AbstractFloral phyllotaxis is a relatively robust phenotype; trimerous and pentamerous arrangements are widely observed in monocots and core eudicots. Conversely, it also shows variability in some angiosperm clades such as ‘ANA’ grade (Amborellales, Nymphaeales, and Austrobaileyales), magnoliids, and Ranunculales. Regardless of the phylogenetic relationship, however, phyllotactic pattern formation appears to be a common process. What are the causes of the variability in floral phyllotaxis and how has the variation of floral phyllotaxis contributed to floral diversity? In this review, I summarize recent progress in studies on two related fields to develop answers to these questions. First, it is known that molecular and cellular stochasticity are inevitably found in biological systems, including plant development. Organisms deal with molecular stochasticity in several ways, such as dampening noise through gene networks or maintaining function through cellular redundancy. Recent studies on molecular and cellular stochasticity suggest that stochasticity is not always detrimental to plants and that it is also essential in development. Second, studies on vegetative and inflorescence phyllotaxis have shown that plants often exhibit variability and flexibility in phenotypes. Three types of phyllotaxis variations are observed, namely, fluctuation around the mean, transition between regular patterns, and a transient irregular organ arrangement called permutation. Computer models have demonstrated that stochasticity in the phyllotactic pattern formation plays a role in pattern transitions and irregularities. Variations are also found in the number and positioning of floral organs, although it is not known whether such variations provide any functional advantages. Two ways of diversification may be involved in angiosperm floral evolution: precise regulation of organ position and identity that leads to further specialization of organs and organ redundancy that leads to flexibility in floral phyllotaxis.

The early years are an important period for childhood development. This fundamental period is often referred to as the ‘golden age’. At an early age, teachers and parents are tasked with providing the basis or foundation for children’s lives in the future. One of the most important elements is the inculcation of life values that will shape the mindset and behaviour. Instilling these values can commence when the child is able to communicate well, and can be undertaken via habituation and the regular patterns of daily life. The purpose of this research is to provide a study of value planting through character education in early childhood. This research is a literature study conducted by researchers by analysing theoretical studies related to the early childhood, particularly those relating to moral and value development and character education.
