The results of the Serbian national integrated West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance program conducted in 2018 and funded by the Serbian Veterinary Directorate are presented. The WNV surveillance program encompassed the entire territory of Serbia and was conducted by the veterinary service in collaboration with entomologists and ornithologists. The objective of the program was early detection of WNV circulation in the environment and timely reporting to the public health service and local authorities to increase clinical and mosquito control preparedness. The program was based on the detection of WNV presence in wild birds (natural hosts) and mosquitoes (virus vectors) and on serological testing of sentinel horses (WNV-specific IgM antibodies). The season 2018 was confirmed to be the season of the most intensive WNV circulation with the highest number and severity of human cases in Serbia ever reported. The most intense WNV circulation was observed in the northern and central parts of Serbia including Vojvodina Province, the Belgrade City area, and surrounding districts, where most positive samples were detected among sentinel animals, mosquitoes and wild birds. The majority of human cases were preceded by the detection of WNV circulation during the surveillance. The WNV surveillance program in 2018 showed satisfactory results in the capacity to indicate the spatial distribution of the risk for humans and sensitivity to early detection of WNV circulation in the environment.

Potato blackleg is frequently observed on the production fields in the Bačka region of Vojvodina province, which is one of the largest potato-growing areas in Serbia. This disease usually occurs during June and July. In July 2020, blackleg symptoms in the form of stem necrotic lesions, vascular discoloration, hollow stems, and wilting of whole plants were noted on potato cultivar VR808 on a field 28 ha in size located in Maglić village (GPS coordinates 45.349325 N, 19.542768 E). Disease incidence was estimated at 20−25%. Isolations were performed from 12 potato samples on Crystal Violet Pectate medium (CVP). Stem sections consisted of brown lesions and healthy tissue (c.10 cm) were surface sterilized with ethyl alcohol 70% (w/v) and rinsed with sterile distilled water. Small pieces of tissue were taken at the edges of stem lesions (between healthy and diseased tissue) were soaked in phosphate buffer saline for 20 min and plated using a standard procedure (Klement et al. 1990). Single colonies that formed pits after 48 hours at 26 °C were re-streaked onto Nutrient Agar (NA) where creamy white colonies with smooth surfaces were formed. A total of 30 isolates were selected and DNA isolated from the colonies was further analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the partial dnaX gene (DNA polymerase subunit III gamma/tau) with primer pair dnaXf/dnaXr for Pectobacterium and Dickeya species identification (Slawiak et al. 2009). A single characteristic band of 535 bp was amplified in all isolates (Slawiak et al. 2009). DNA sequence alignment showed two distinct groups of isolates (Fig.S1), which were genetically uniform within each group. Using BLASTn search, it was established that the dnaX sequence of the first group (consisting of 19 Serbian potato isolates) had 99.79% identity with NCBI-deposited Pectobacterium versatile strains 14A and 3-2 from potato from Belarus (Acc. No. CP034276 and CP024842, respectively) as well as SCC1 from Finland (Acc. No. CP021894). The remaining 11 dnaX sequences had 100% identity with Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum strain CFBP7081 originating from water in Spain (Acc. No. MK516961). The partial dnaX sequences of three Serbian P. versatile isolates (Pv1320, Pv1520, and Pv1620) and one P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc2520) were deposited in GenBank under Acc. No. MW839571, MW805306, MW839572, and MW805307, respectively. These results, indicating combined infection in the observed field, signify the first identification of P. versatile in Serbia. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) performed with proA (proAF1/ proAR1) and mdh (mdh2/mdh4) genes (Ma et al. 2007; Moleleki et al. 2013) grouped three tested Serbian potato P. versatile isolates together with P. versatile strains from NCBI (Fig.S2). For both tested genes, BLASTn search revealed 100% homology with P. versatile strain SCC1 from Finland. Three Serbian P. versatile potato isolates were deposited under Acc. Nos. MZ682623-25 for proA and MZ682620-22 for mdh genes. According to the routine tests suggested for Pectobacteriaceae (Schaad et al. 2001), Serbian isolates possessed microbiological traits identical to P. versatile description (Portier et al. 2019). Pathogenicity was performed on potato cultivar VR808 with three selected P. versatile isolates (Pv1320, Pv1520, and Pv1620) in the following assays: (i) surface-sterilized tuber slices with holes in the center filled with 100 µL of bacterial suspensions (adjusted to 109 CFU mL-1) to test the isolates’ ability to cause soft rot, and (ii) young, four-week old plants with developed 3rd true leaf (c. 30 cm tall) were inoculated by injecting stems with bacterial suspension adjusted to 107 - 108 CFU mL-1 at a height 5 cm above the soil line. Negative controls were treated with sterile distilled water. Inoculated plants were kept under controlled conditions (25 °C temperature and >70% relative humidity). Each assay was replicated twice. Soft rot appeared on tuber slices 24 h after inoculation. On inoculated stems, initial symptoms manifested as greasy elongated spots at inoculation sites two days after inoculation (DAI), and subsequently extended along the vascular tissue and became necrotic. Whole plant's decay was recorded in five DAI, while negative controls remained healthy. To complete Koch's postulates, bacteria were re-isolated from symptomatic potato plants and confirmed by PCR and sequencing of dnaX. This first report of P. versatile in potato indicates that blackleg currently present in Serbia is caused by a diverse bacterial population. This pathogen was first identified in genome comparison as ‘Candidatus Pectobacterium maceratum’ (Shirshikov et al. 2018) and was later renamed as Pectobacterium versatile sp. nov. (Portier et al. 2019). Thus far, bacterium Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. brasiliensis has been recognized as dominant pathogen on most of the infected fields in Vojvodina province, and was recently noted on one plot subjected to a combined infection with Dickeya dianthicola (Marković et al. 2021). Findings achieved in this study are highly relevant, as they point to the diversity in potato blackleg pathogens, likely due to the increasingly widespread distribution of imported seed potatoes.

Abstract Background The European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner, 1796) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is the major pest of maize (Zea mays Linnaeus, 1753) in Serbia. One potential method for managing this pest is the augmentative release of naturally occuring egg parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma. The first step in this process is accurately identifying the naturally occuring species and estimating their natural distribution and abundance. Molecular identification, based on differences in DNA sequences, has commonly been employed for the identification of Trichogramma species. A simple, quick, and accurate molecular assay is urgently required for the identification of two common Trichogramma species, associated with ECB in Serbia: T. brassicae Bezdenko, 1968 and Trichogramma evanescens Westwood, 1833. Such an assay will facilitate an expansive survey of resident populations of Trichogramma associated with ECB across agricultural growing regions of Vojvodina province. Results A species-specific multiplex PCR assay for the 2 species was developed and validated that assay using a sample of 79 parasitoid wasps reared from ECB egg masses collected from sample sites across Vojvodina province. Trichogramma brassicae was confirmed as the dominant egg parasitoid of ECB in this region, accounting for 77 of the 79 wasps (97.47%). The remaining 2 were confirmed as T. evanescens. Trichogramma brassicae was detected at all 12 sample sites, while T. evanescens was detected at only 2 plots, Mokrin and Nakovo. Conclusions The species-specific multiplex PCR assay presented herein can provide the basis of a quick, cheap, and reliable means for identifying the species of Trichogramma that parasitize ECB egg masses in Serbia. Two currently documented species, T. brassicae and T. evanescens, are readily diagnosed by the size of the PCR product they produce in the assay. Any additional species are expected to not produce a band of a diagnostic size. Such species would subsequently be identified by sequencing, which may also allow them to be promptly incorporated into a revised assay.

To determine the state of sustainable tourism development in the protected natural areas of AP Vojvodina, it is important to analyze and correlate certain indicators of sustainable tourism. It is also important to analyze the opinion of visitors according to the selected protected natural areas, from the perspective of experiences and potential suggestions for specific interventions, to improve the state of natural values and improve the area protection. As a final result, it can provide significant benefits for all participants of sustainable tourism development. This paper analyzed and presented the results of visitor responses regarding 5 selected protected natural areas on the territory of AP Vojvodina. These areas represent a significant sample for analysis and the results of the research can influence the overall assessment of the sustainable tourism development of the Province. Using the correlation method of obtained average values of estimated sustainability indicators, the relation of these indicators to sustainable tourism was defined. The results obtained can influence the constitution of proposals for the improvement of the natural values of these areas through the proper implementation of nature protection. By enhancing these natural values, benefits are provided to all participants in sustainable tourism development.

This study evaluates the pre-vaccination prevalence of HPV infection in women from Vojvodina, Serbia, according to age and cytological status. A total of 1,495 women, ranging from 18 to 65 years of age, with different cytological results were enrolled. The HPV genotyping assay was performed using the EUROArray HPV test in order to detect thirty genitally relevant HPV subtypes. In our study, the most prevalent genotypeswere HPV 16, 31, 51, and 53. Among these, HPV 16 was consistently present in all cytological subgroups. Twelve HPV genotypes classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) were detected in 77.8.0% of HSIL/ASCH and 55.0% of NILM with abnormal colposcopy findings. Six possible carcinogens—HRs (group 2B) were often found in women with normal cytology (14.8%) and mild abnormalities (ASCUS and LSIL), but with lower frequence in HSIL/ASCH lesions (7.1%). HPVs 6 and 11(Group 3) were not found in the cases of HSIL/ASCH. Unclassified HPV types were equally distributed in all cytology groups: 20.7%, 19.1%, 16.3% and 13% of NILM, ASCUS, LSIL and HSIL/ASCH, respectively. Our findings highlight that majority of abnormal Pap test results are caused by Group 1 HPVs among women from our region. Low frequency HPVs of group 2A/2B, especially HSIL/ASCH, supports the conclusion that individual genotypes require consideration of each type as an individual agent. We expect a positive impact of HPV vaccine in reducing HPV-associated cervical lesions among women from Vojvodina province, after establishing vaccination programs in our country.

The aim of this paper is to present the results of the recent collecting earthworms, with new localities and new habitats in Vojvodina Province. The sporadic field investigation was carried out during 2013-2020. In this paper we report new records of Criodrilus lacuum Hoffmeister, 1845 (family Criodrilidae) proved to be new species for the fauna of Vojvodina Province. Also, information on the taxonomic status of individual species was provided. Fifteen earthworm species and subspecies from family Lumbricidae have been registered. Six taxa were found to be synonymous with nominal species, so that the number decreases to 31 species, from 10 genera. Our data demonstrate clearly that the earthworm fauna of the Vojvodina Province is relatively poor, monotonous and that the impact of intensification of agricultural practices effect on loss of soil biodiversity.

Intensive crop cultivation systems require continuous monitoring of irrigation water quality as well as the control of physical and chemical soil properties. In view of the ongoing climate change and a dramatic decrease in soil organic matter content, the use of low quality irrigation water and its adverse effects on soil, cultivated plants and irrigation equipment must not be overlooked. The aim of this paper was to evaluate general quality of irrigation water from the different water intake sources in the Vojvodina Province. The paper presents the results of irrigation water quality, collected during 2018 and 2019. The research included 140 irrigation water samples obtained from three different intake structures which collect water from wells, canals or reservoirs. Water quality was assessed using the following parameters: pH value, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), ionic balance, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) value. Water quality diagram given by the US Salinity Laboratory (USSL) and FAO guidelines for interpretation water quality for irrigation was used. Additionally, the Nejgebauer classification for irrigation water, developed specifically for the area of Vojvodina, was used as a third classification. Based on the results of mineralization of the irrigation water, the following values of the observed parameters were determined: average pH of the analyzed water samples were 7.89, ranged from 7.14 to 9.01, while electrical conductivity values ranged from 0.10 to 3.50 dS/m, with an average of 0.85 dS/m. TDS analysis resulted in a wide range of values, from 112 mg/l to 2,384 mg/l, with an average of 529,22 mg/l. SAR values varied between 0.04-16.52 with a satisfactory average of 1.97. The USSL water classification produced similar results as FAO classification and RSC index <0, indicating that 57% of investigating samples are without concerns for irrigation use, whereas Nejgebauers classification and RSC index 0-1.25 show that over 75% of analyzed samples are suitable and safe for irrigation and soil properties. Since the quality of irrigation water significantly affects plant productivity, as it determines the chemical and physical properties of agricultural land, monitoring of water quality for irrigation is of high importance.

The present study was conducted on 106 leaf samples of Prunus species (44 plum, 47 myrobalan plum, 10 apricot, 3 peach, 1 blackthorn, and 1 sour cherry) collected from the Vojvodina province of Serbia and assessed for the presence of Plum pox virus (PPV) with the aim of establishing whether trees growing along roadsides and in backyards could be sources of PPV infection in commercial orchards. Analyses confirmed PPV infection in 68.2%, 38.6%, and 20% of plum, myrobalan plum and apricot samples, respectively. The infection level varied considerably across locations, with 80% noted in Uljma, followed by 69% in Sremska Kamenica, 60% in Becej, 50% in Temerin, 50% in Senta, 40% in Petrovaradin, 31% in Novi Sad, 30% in Susek, and 20% in Subotica. As no difference in infection rates was noted between young and older plum trees, the infections seemed to have occurred in their early life stage. Trees growing along roadsides were infected to a higher extent (89.6%) than those in backyards (66.6%). In some cases, symptomless trees were also proven to be PPV positive, indicating that they are a potentially important source of further virus infections. Due to the widespread presence of the virus, tolerant or hypersensitive cultivars are recommended for planting new orchards.
