Abstract Bacillus cereus sensu lato is a group of bacteria of medical and agricultural importance in different ecological niches and with controversial taxonomic relationships. Studying the composition of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in several bacterial groups has been an important tool for identifying genetic information. However, to date, no comparative genomics study of ncRNA has been performed in this group. Thus, this study aimed to identify and characterize the set of ncRNAs from 132 strains of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus anthracis to obtain an overview of the diversity and distribution of these genetic elements in these species. We observed that the number of ncRNAs differs in the chromosomes of the three species, but not in the plasmids, when species or phylogenetic clusters were compared. The prevailing functional/structural category was Cis-reg and the most frequent class was Riboswitch. However, in plasmids, the class Group II intron was the most frequent. Also, nine ncRNAs were selected for validation in the strain B. thuringiensis 407 by RT-PCR, which allowed to identify the expression of the ncRNAs. The wide distribution and diversity of ncRNAs in the B. cereus group, and more intensely in B. thuringiensis, may help improve the abilities of these species to adapt to various environmental changes.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of information structure on word order in Italian and Peninsular Spanish ‘why’-interrogatives, and whether these two languages differ from each other. To this end, we conducted two empirical studies. In a parallel text corpus study, we compared the frequency of the word order patterns ‘why’SV and ‘why’VS, as well as the distribution of focal and non-focal subjects in the two languages. In order to get a deeper understanding of the impact of the information structural categories focus and givenness on word order in ‘why’-interrogatives, we conducted a forced-choice experiment. The results indicate that word order is affected by focus in Italian, while it is not determined by any information structural category in Peninsular Spanish. We show that Italian and Peninsular Spanish ‘why’-interrogatives differ from each other in two ways. First, non-focal subjects occur preverbally in Italian, while they occupy the postverbal position in Peninsular Spanish. Second, Italian reveals a lower level of optionality with respect to word order patterns. Even though we find a high preference for the postverbal position in Peninsular Spanish, we argue that this limitation is related to a higher flexibility regarding word order in Peninsular Spanish than in Italian which does not allows for ‘why’VSO in contrast to Peninsular Spanish.

This study deals with the discourse marker in Joko Widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC CHINA in 2015. This study attampted to investigate the domaint elements of Discourse Marker of Joko Widodo speeches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015, the type and how discourse marker are coded in the president Joko Widodo specches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015. The study was conducted by quantitative design. The data in this study were the vidio of JOKO widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC in China 2015 which got 102 clauses from the vidio. The clauses were transcribed in order to be analyzed. In relation to the problems of the study, the purpose of the study is to find the types of discourse markers and to elaborate the reasons of occurrence of discourse markers used the speech based on situational context. And this research was using descriptive qualitative method. From the data analysis and findings, there were four categories from discourse markers found in Joko Widodo speeches they are interpersonal category, referential categories, structural category and cognitive category,  and the dominant category found was cognitive category. Keywords: Discourse Markers, Speeches and Types, KTT APEC

AbstractIn this paper, we provide new evidence for the hypothesis that in some languages, differential object marking (DOM) may have evolved from marking of the information structural category of topicality. While Iemmolo (2010) suggested that topic left-dislocation might have facilitated the evolution of DOM, and Dalrymple and Nikolaeva (2011) argued for systematic marking of secondary topics as the source of DOM, we suggest a third possible grammaticalization source within the topical domain: the prepositional marking of embedded topics. In particular, we show that the Romanian DO (Direct Object) marker pe had a function as marker of embedded topics in Old Romanian. Moreover, we show how DOM in Old Romanian may additionally have been facilitated by the re-analysis of embedded topics as themes in certain constructions.

Protein adsorption at the liquid–solid interface is an old but not totally solved topic. One challenge is to find an easy way to characterize the protein behavior on nanoparticles and make a correlation with its intrinsic properties. This work aims to investigate protein adsorption on gold nanoparticles and the colloidal properties. The protein panel was chosen from different structural categories (mainly-α, mainly-β or mix-αβ). The result shows that the colloidal stability with salt addition does not depend on the structural category. Conversely, using the single nanopore technique, we show that the mainly-α proteins form a smaller corona than the mainly-β proteins. We assign these observations to the lower internal energy of α-helices, making them more prone to form a homogeneous corona layer.

The article is a short presentation of a translation concept created by an American cognitivist and physicist Douglas Hofstadter included in his book Le Ton beau de Marot. The principles of the concept are presented by means of a metaphor. Translation is a game of, only partially conscious, participation in an infinite loop: words evoke images and images – words. The contact with the original text creates images in the translator’s mind that he or she translates by means of language structures into sentences/verses of the target language. This cognitive intuition is paired with a structural category of Stanisław Barańczak’s semantic dominant. This methodological, structural-cognitive pair is a starting point for the analysis of Barańczak’s translation of Ogden Nash’s The Dog. The stylistic and formal solutions (especially rhymes) used by the translator are analysed, but the main goal of the text is to capture the elusive, i.e. the analysis of the interlinguistic and‘inter-mental’ translation of the absurd sense of humour.

This article presents a study of the self-presentation of shopping centers in the Czech Republic as “family-friendly” spaces. The notion of family-friendliness is analyzed both as a structural category, referring to the structure of the stereotypical normal family and to its respective members, and as a cultural representation, referring to “family values,” which Czech malls invoke in their self-presentation. It is argued that the presentation of a “space for the whole family” covers only the persistent stereotype of female-led economic consumption. The family values of safety and comfort distinguish shopping centers negatively from the city centers. They also strongly refer to the country’s past by invoking the image of a family promenade. On a more general level, the family appeal thrives on the phenomenon of postsocialist privatism and on the turning away from the public sphere in favor of the private realm of the family.
